Hello DemurePrincess Elton Johns Wig Pamcake1 p4p1 Falconista spudmaster tony Tonga Bob

Judging is currently underway and I've found it a real tough ask to push any one entry below any other. Loved every image! (even those which appeared in the thread but were not eligible entries for the competition)

I've spent many units of time poring over each submission. I'm judging by the image, not the text* though the text is definitely of use to reference the intent of the work.

A shortlist of the leading 4 entries will be posted very soon (presented in the form of an HM to the other 3), followed by a countdown of those final 4.

View attachment thecuts_mcinnesS38.mp4

* I am directed to award the prize to "the person who submits an original picture which is adjudged by [myself] as the best Photoshopped image (or shoop) of the season"

Honourable Mentions :

I've selected 4 of the 7 images for a final countdown, however, those which are not part of these 4, are still fabulous images which deserve high credit!

In no order between themselves I thank the following for their entries:

"The Creation Of Grand Uncle Horace" - DemurePrincess
Demure s38.jpeg
Judge's comments:
  • The deity shown is one known for producing successes despite incompetence.
  • I hope that's an oyster shell, because if it's the inside of a spleen it changes everything.
  • Simpsons pron was once a thing.

"Stumps" - Falconista
s38 mcinnes - falconista.png

Judge's comments:
  • I had to google who Mitch Marsh was.
  • The artist has a similar view of the Fibonacci Sequence to my own.
  • I think it's setting up for a sequel. (but sadly, that's just a joke).

"My Favourite Things" - tony
tony.jpg

Judge's comments:
  • Feels oddly political.
  • I deliberated over declaring this image invalid due to the realism - looks more like GUH & PMB posed for a photo. But I eased off when remembering nobody makes faux cobble rugs anymore.
  • Simpsons torture pron was once a thing.

Fourth Place :

"Qooty Guess Who?" - spudmaster
spudmaster2.png

Judge's note: The production by spudmaster is an entertaining story in itself, but there are a few more elements that elevated it into the top 4. First is the prolific number of individual shoops required to complete the image - you can almost smell the coffee that was required to persist in the creative effort. But more importantly, this is a really silly joke - but it's a quality silly joke, with layers. It's technically just a shopped image, but it can be read like a short story, as multiple pennies drop in succession. Finally, there are multiple ways in which this work tugs at the heartstrings. There is some true cleverness inherent in this submission.

Third Place :

"UNFORCH." - Pamcake1
Pamcake.jpg

There's a need to look away from UNFORCH. just to examine what it's made you think. As with the Guess Who? entry, there are multiple themes at once here - the afterlife, the displacement, and the search. The contentment of Horrie as he appraises a new domain, and the horror explicit in the eyes of whomever might be assigned to listening to his stories for a very, very long time. The title of the work itself has one meaning but no specific application - for me, I'm reading it as a reference to the lot of the captive audience!

This is an evocative piece, and a beautiful nod to a wonderful soul. It also reminds me I'd shared a home with someone who watched Brideshead dozens of times, while I'd never seen it even the once.

Serene & comforting, while eerie & unnerving, all at once.

Runner-Up :

"A Grand Ol' Fall" - p4p1
p4p1 - Ali Foreman.png

Firstly it's super impressive how well the actual shooping has worked here. Show this image to someone outside both loops utilised for the image, and it would take a moment to notice there are edits.

The meaning? For me, I'm honestly left with guesses. Sometimes it's just time for clarity and decisiveness, and p4p1 has latched onto the torp here with excellent bluntness. And yet questions still spill forth. Are we viewing the culmination of an internal struggle? Or was GUH the manifestation of banter itself, with all Sweet FA participants merely embellished versions of the one true stirrer. Is this one league participant, or is this the community, made in that image?

Is it a direct analysis? Everybody wanted a piece of Horrie, but here we are forced to contemplate that perhaps nobody wanted to lower his colours more than Horrie himself.

But back to clarity - and amongst all the questions, it's vivid how the artist depicts the everlasting legacy which will persist. This is why RIP and "long live" are treated as synonyms.

A wonderful testatment to a wonderful personality. Or persona. Surely both.

Always remember that in the world of Sweet, boxing is known as "The Science".

MCINNES PRIZE SEASON 38 WINNER :

"Requiem For A Grand Old Man" - Elton Johns Wig
EJW.png

It is my great pleasure to announce (per my own judging) that the Season 38 McInnes Award winner is EJW for his piece "Requiem For A Grand Old Man"!

This piece just struck me. Imo it best descibes both planes - where Horrie has gone from, and where to. I can sense the echoes of his melody scattering around and around recurrently. His tune would fill the ascendant plane to which he has arrived, but also resound infinitely throughout the barrenness left behind.

I am inspired by this image, it reminds me of a quote from "The Year My Voice Broke" : "Everything that's ever happened in a place - it's all still here." This great work talks of all those great works GUH - and indeed everyone who surrounds us - creates here in this community. An incredible world, with incredible players. And that's the spirit Horrie reminds us of. Everybody create memories here. In some cases - some become memories. That's not only memories, but also memories. But maybe that's just my own waffle.

And yes, the image depicts how there is a gulf where one man used to be. It's gigantic, and it's impossible to ignore. There is strong sentiment in this implication.

I chose this image over the other submissions because of two things. First it suddenly made me sad, when the message struck. A hole in this world, left by the departure of a great identity. And second, it reassured me, because that hole is filled with a melody of everything created during his time here with us.

I love to be led into sentiment. And this piece - in my humble opinion did it best. For all my 5 or 6 paragraphs here, the real message is simple: sadness of loss, but comforted by the reminders.

Congratulations EJW. Tough field to emerge out of, but I truly do judge your piece as the premier of that strong field, for Season 38.

Vale Grand Uncle Horace . Look at what you've done.

Mobbs thank you for your kind words.

I was very taken by Horrie, I quite loved him. I shared a certain view with him and enjoyed his unique outlook.

Yes, the chasm left is what I stare into in remembrance. I was told of his passing by Tigerturbulance as I was going through my own struggles, which are far from finished. Turbo messaged me, and it really hit me. I phoned Turbo as I hadn't spoken in a while.

I'll never forget Horrie. I'm really glad of this years theme, I think it was beautiful.

Thank you and congratulations to all entrants, they were excellent and thoroughly enjoyed.

Lastly, thank you to Tonga Bob.

No one in this community bar Turbo has done as much for me and my well being as Bob this year. It's been tough. He is a magnificent individual who I am proud to call a friend after only fleeting real life catch ups.

I look forward to a beer with the man later this week, all things being equal.

Vale Horrie, you are sorely missed.

BEST. MCINNES. JUDGE. EVER!!

Mobbs you have truly gone above and beyond in the justifications of your voting. AND I didn’t need to post the results! Thank you so much for taking the time to put all that together. They should name an award after you.

Massive thank you to all of the entrants in DemurePrincess Falconista tony spudmaster Pamcake1 & p4p1 for putting together such outstanding entries and for portraying Horrie so lovingly. I look forward to seeing what you come up with in next season’s competition.

And to you Elton Johns Wig - dual McInnes winner has a nice ring to it aye? Mazel tov my friend, totally deserved! You’ve got some seriously large boots to fill when you judge the next McInnes prize, but we can talk about that over a Pilsner 🍻

See you in season 39 art lovers!

Thanks for sharing the above. Your image felt pretty special to me. I only got onto this from about 6pm today, downloaded the images and gave them all a solid look. Starting ordering them and then started writing, going back for additional looks. All were good, a couple were touching, but yours kind of got to me. I started to become very affected by the sentiments in the images and by the time I got to yours, I was very certain about my choice. I could sense it was a personal statement from you. I'm glad you have some great support from peeps here and I really do wish you strength to prevail in your difficulties <3

I've got an admission to make, I hope it gets a chuckle from you. I assumed the other character had to be you (who else could it be?) but try as I might, I couldn't confirm for certain that it was the same person in your avatar. I was scared to guess it and be wrong - would have been a scandal - but I also didn't have time to try to PM you and make sure! Which is why I didn't comment on you sitting on the edge of the canyon, but concentrated on talking about the pianist & what that meant to me. I overall reflected on it being you, but I wasn't game to say it in the text!

Oh thank god you noticed I'd completed the judging. Don't feel so bad now that I forgot to tag you when I was done!

Thanks for again managing the event, Bob! I hope to be able to contribute again next season. Oh and I might try to shoehorn in the artwork into the Museum of Art or whatever I called the gallery in the Minecraft world. Just gotta work out how to get the images onto the screenies. Do you know anyone with skills in shooping?

You Am I Tim Rogers? I never recognised him from your avatar lol

Didn't get into You Am I that much, but Tim Rogers does a song with Damian Cowell that's a ripper. There's a live version on youtube but only in the middle of some doco somewhere. If I can find it I'll snip it and share it for you.

No it doesn't. He's had quite the career Damien.

And I love You Am I, but enjoy Tim just as much away from YAI, by himself, as a writer, with the Bamboos, with the Temperence Union.

He's quite the raconteur.
