I'm not informed enough to know, but I'm guessing injury prevention or mental fatigue.

I can accept that on face value, but it does have a bit of an icky vibe when that's the narrative we hear, then they play IPL.

He's pretty much always been that (since he started making a name for himself in T20s). Just happened to come off a bit more consistently in the IPL.
