The finals have been decided and there is team in the finals that shouldn't be there. They don't deserve to be there. I wonder how Sydney feel given that they are pretenders and everyone knows it. Unfortunately there is a team sitting 10th and they should be in the eight. How the AFL can live with themselves is beyond me. For whatever reason there is the AFL just seems to go out of their way to f^*k us over. Any bonuses coming the way of management should be stopped but of course with no transparency in the AFL we will never know.

The AFL must fix the their inadequate systems and the unevenness of the competition. Every club should be on a level playing field. The only way that will happen is if the fans take the time to tell the AFL that enough is enough.

The compensation is a tough one.

End of the day, it was one bad umpire call.

Yes it has cost us our spot in the Finals. But in terms of bad umpiring costing games and giving out compo, where do you draw the line.

If the AFL set a precedent for compo, what do they do when another bad decision is made near the end of a game.

Rewarding our players and club financially is probably the fairest option. As it doesn't give us an advantage over the other clubs and we are really just receiving what we earnt anyway.

We should get the better draw on the back of our performance and how great our games are to watch.

The big change out of this will probably the actual goal review system.

They need to change the kick out situation. An opposition team should not be able to stop a review with a kick out.

Give more power to field and boundary umpires to assist in calling for a review.

And review all close scoring shots, basically what they have done this weekend.

It's not just a bad decision though.... it's an actual goal that hasn't been added to the score.

A missed free- they might have missed.
A paid free - they might have scored anyway.

An actual goal that is called a point..... no mights about it.

Needs to taken out of the goal umpires hands. A central review system should have communicated to the central umpire to award a goal to us.
One of the field umpires should have stopped play as soon as it happened, Most people at the ground knew it was a goal, The field umpires were just as incompetent as the goal umpire for letting play continue and they have seemed to avoid any criticism. The whole mess and how it's been handled is more than the McLaughlin "Human Error" thing. Swans in the finals= TV ratings

They just hate us. It’s as simple as that.

If he thought that hit the post, he is incompetent. Massive gap.

If he had any doubt he should have asked for a review.

He didn't. Even with 45,000 people in the crowd cheering and our players celebrating, he arrogantly thought he was right.

That massive reaction in itself is a trigger for some doubt.

The system was there to help him. He chose not to use it.

Let's not pretend he had no support.

I will say though, one change that is required is that there needs to be a way to instigate a review from a point regardless of the ball being kicked in quickly.

It would be interesting to see how the scenario would have played out if:
  • We were playing a big Victorian club (Eg Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, etc)
  • The game was at the MCG
  • It was the Vic club that kicked the goal in the dying stages but was incorrectly called a behind
  • we win and The Vic club misses out of finals because of the decision.

Would there be even more noise? Would the AFL take further action? Would the Vic club take further action?

I just have a feeling things could have panned out a bit differently had it been someone else.

Have you ever been to a Grand Final, mate?

I've been to 25 of them since 1990

I think I know what I'm talking about.

Interstate travel aside, in terms of noise for both teams, they're about as "neutral" as any AFL final gets.
I went to the GWS v Richmond GF and if you think that's neutral you are on some hard drugs.

The 1st quarter was tight. After the umps paid a dodgy free that led to a goal, the crowd roared so loud for Richmond. The GWS players realised at that moment that no matter how hard they played, they could never win. The intensity went out of the game.

No way it's a neutral venue if there is only 1 Victorian side.

I would bet they tried. Probably the first thing asked Saturday night.

Also sets a bad precedent. Next time there is a howler like the Dawson v Collingwood one, replay the game....

Replaying the game or portion of the game is just a ridiculous expectation.

The decision was so agregious that the AFL could have sent the teams back out to play 78 seconds, given what was at stake. It wasn't just a "woopsie" with the speed of play and players in the way situation.

The umpire is supposed to be in the best position to see. So either he guessed (wrong) because he didn't see or cheated. If he guessed and didn't call for the replay that's improper procedure.

Instead, the AFL spent all of Saturday night trying to find ways the goal umpire was right instead of correct a massive mistake.

Probably would have reversed the result.

Should have just added our goal at the end of the game when the realised it was a mistake. Swans got a free ride to the wing on the restart with half our team still high fiveing the crowd. It pretty much equalled a free centre clerance for them which is better than what they would have got with 18 v 18 restart after the goal.

I hope Olsen extracts every ounce of value from them behind closed doors, now it's official it cost us finals.
I never liked him as a politician but I like him now. After watching his interview I'm sure he'll fight tooth and nail to get us compensation. I have no doubt the Crows management were watching this round like us hoping and praying that results would fall our way to say to the VFL that we would've made finals if it wasn't for their blunder. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I agree with the sentiment the AFL handled this poorly after the umpire made the mistake.

But, what grounds are there to replay the extra time? Umpire mistakes happen all the time. Should we replay the period after Dawson's non free as well? AFL admitted that was wrong.

Once the AFL do that, they have opened a massive Pandora's box of precedent.

It just can't happen.

The real answer is to get better umpires.

Daniel Hoskin's eyes should have seen the gap between ball and post. If he heard a noise, there is doubt

Call for a review. It is that simple.

We are not playing Finals because one Umpire decided he was correct and was too arrogant to call for a review

Incompetence and arrogance is a bad mix for an umpire.

Get rid of him.

Disagree its a pandoras box it would only be for score review where there is a clear mistake. If the AFL actually made the score review competent then there is no longer an issue.

Also they don't need to play the extra time as long as more than half the game has been completed you can stop and declare a result according to the AFL rules.

What in the hell was this stupid pantomime crap on the weekend?

Why on the weekend in our game did they review goals that they thought were goals?

It makes no sense Goals are already reviewed so it seems to have been literally done to pretend they have done something yet it made them look like amateurs who don't understand the rules.

The calling a point was a mistake. The no review was a breakdown in process. Which Gil was very sure to say wasn’t the case on his Sunday presser. We have a system to over rule when these things happen, and it didn’t kick in. It’s not like reviewing a bad free kick where there is no process for it.

Absolutely should have been called back and time reset when they realized.

We should be in and Sydney should be out. Instead we play in a competition where it doesn’t matter if you’re the better team and do enough to win, results come down to luck and what side of the line you fall under under the AFL’s whim.

sure as shit should be pushing for no sunday twilight games, and a return to friday night footy

also games in prime time MCG slots (friday night/saturday night)

It's a legit question, I ask

Some of you guys don't seem to comprehend what I'm saying about Grand Finals
I suspect you're just basing your opinions on what you see on TV. If you'd been to a few GF's, then you would know.

I don't really give a sh*t. It's just funny to me that you're arguing with me about it and saying "what a load of crap!"
I'm just telling you how it is. But you guys can think whatever you like. No skin off my nose. :D

See ya, guys. Good luck next year. You've got a good team. Rachele looks like a beauty.:thumbsu:
I’ve been to three. Predominantly Victorian crowd goes for the Victorian team. Every. Single. Time.

Absolutely. Human error is part of the game. It will always have human error. The only way around it would be to turn the game into an NFL style review free for all where every play is scrutinised. Could you imagine, Smith kicks out from full back to Dawson on the lead, Dawson marks. The review and umpires then look at every aspect of the play and over turn it because Hinge held onto Papley for a brief moment in the pocket and now Papley has a shot for goal. He misses, but the review system picks up that Hinge over stepped the mark by a few centimetres while jumping to block the kick so they take Papley to the square.

Look the fact is players decision making impacts games far worse than a single umpiring mistake. We probably had several chances to win the game long before the umpire got involved. Sometimes it goes your way other times it doesn't. We really need to stop acting like it cost us a premiership. Because it certainly didn't.
