No wonder it is popular on TV in Sydney.

Again another dullard who doesn't know the differences between rugby league and rugby union.

FFS...

any one who like nrl better then afl are a discrase. In 5 years time there will be same record attendences maybe even more to watch west sydney play then rugby because they will realise that NRL is SHIT!!!!

But isn't that the definition of bandwagoning? Not turning up during the season then all of a sudden your team is in the finals so you turn up, ha! Soft as mud.
Of course it is. But that's the league way. Australian Rules culture is markedly different, and will translate to new markets in the same way that the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans generally swamp their rugby league counterparts in terms of both membership and crowds.

I'm suprised this thread has gotten this far.

The AFL generates more money, higher attendances, higher memberships.

It is more marketable and thus sought after more by advertisers.

In every measurable way it is the superior product/brand/code.

Any argument in support of league can not use a single fact to support the argument, only opinion.

AFL is superior in every facet.

swans have lost ratings and crowds since their 2005/06 grand finals..

so isnt it the sydney way?

Come on, don't tell fibs.

Tell me why they are, without saying "they get 30k to every home game".

Because If there was one rugby league team in Sydney, playing in Sydney every fortnight, you would sell out ANZ Stadium every week.

There's only one league team in sports-mad Melbourne... wanna have a stab at storm's crowd averages?

What do they do in the Rugby League scrums?

See the aforementioned picture of Hoppa going the "date". :)

BTW I'm not having a go at the game on here. I've played plenty of rugby union, rugby league and aussie rules (admittedly to a higher level in the rugby codes) to know that each game has its own skills set and you can't say one game is harder to play than the other.

I just find the delusion of some fans a little hard to swallow. Cairns is an AFL heartland? I mean, come on...

Their home crowd average is still 28,239 for 2009. Yes, thats the home crowd average, not including the games they play outside of Sydney (which is low to mid 30k combining home and away matches). Not bad for "fickle Sydney sportfans".

I don't think theres a Sydney RL club who can claim a figure that high. So whats the excuse if your product is so superior?

Cairns has a Australian Football following but yes, it's no heartland. The heartland will always be Victoria in the East and everything West of the Eastern states

What I really don't understand is the paranoia and fear especially coming out of NSW, though Searle's bleating up here on the Coast has been very amusing as well. :D (My favourite would have to be his "Unfair playing field" whining.)

How is two extra teams really going to war with Rugby codes? How some administrator from Parra was it? Moving over to a AFL job is considered evidence of such war?

Spot on invinciBlues. Obviously all teams will have some drop off when performances start to diminsh. However to still pull over 28,000 per home game in 2009 when they missed the finals is a good result.

Compare this to 2009 NRL runners-up Parramatta, who only got 7,000 to a home game against Cronulla mid-year. Fast forward a few months and all the one-eyed Channel 9 Grand Final commentary team can tell us about is how passionate the Eels fans are.

2008 26,721¹ 6th, Semi-Finalists 32,834
2009 10th 28,239

notice the drop on members and crowds when swans drop down the la

YES, they still have a great support base, but the fickle numbers are still there.

Swans are best supported sporting team..with bums on seats..no argument from anyone
