Review The OFFICIAL Ballarat North v Dogs wash up thread

Didn't go, didn't see, didn't hear.

It would great if people could leave their thoughts here to give a little insight into how our boys went individually & collectively, how the coach had the team set up and play, and if Ballarat has a decent hot potato stand.

The one question I'd really like to hear thoughts on is; Did we set up and play as if this was a serious match or just another Michael Mouse training drill?

Cheers.:thumbsu:

Re: Ballarat wash up thread

Ill repost this here for people tha dont like to search.. my thoughts on todays game...

Just finished watching the game and i thought id give a bit of a report for those who didnt get the chance to watch.
Was overall a prety scrappy game and the skill level wasnt at its highest but it is pre season so im not to fussed.
Run and carry seemed good and they boys seemed to use the corridor well when it was open.
North sat out plenty of stars in the first half inculding wellsy, boomer and spitta.. (aa midfield there)
started well with a couple to anthony who looked lively throughout the game and generally used the ball well..
the dogs hit back late in the first and from there till half time it was a fairly even contest. after half time it was a different story.. Boomer was everywhere.. 13 touches for the quarter ( 19 for the match) and totally dominaed with his run an carry.. just typical boomer tbh.
Wellsy was his normal class act.. while he didnt get much he looked a class above whenever he did.. looked out bommers.. he will tear you a new one....again!!
few players worth mentioning.
Tarrent: provided a target all day.. didnt end up kicking one but set up a couple and marked stongly throughout the game.
Spud: he has copped alot throughout the preseason but today he looked on song.. cutting off attacks and the rebounding just aswell.
Wells: only word needed was SILK.
Harvey: can never keep a champion down.. came on and showed everyone how to run and use the ball.
Atley: not a massive game but did a few nice things and set up a couple of goals.
Goldy/Monster: Goldy dominated the hitouts and did a few nice things but i thought both were very quiet throughout.
Sammy Wright: played down back and look composed throughout the game. other than one out of the full he didnt really miss a target.
Thomas: I dont care what anyone says, he still has the yips... when the game is won and your 20 out directly infront you have no pressure and u still miss.. other than his goal kicking he played well.
Basti: was everywhere in the first half befor being subbed... this guy will be amazing given the time.. really hope he signs... so important with his inside and outside play,
Anthony: kicked a couple of nice goals and probably could have kicked 4.. field kicking was ok all be it a little floaty when kicking.. doesnt have the best penetration.. should be in side round 1 though.
Harper: generally quiet but kicked a couple in the 3rd... oozes class whenever he has the ball.
Thompson: close To BOG.. dont recall a mistake all game.. intercepting opposition kicks and provided great rebound.

as for the new guys, didnt notice much of gibson.. actually dont recall him getting a touch but in saying that this is the first game ive sceen this year. Delaney i noticed a little bit more.. didnt get a heap but looked composed when he did.. Mckenzie.. came on after half time... only had it a few times but didnt miss a target, given time and he will make half back his own.

overall fairly happy to see the boys for the first time this year, still feel they need to be a bit cleaner, especially when going forward but movement through the middle of the ground was a feature.

Re: Ballarat wash up thread

Good summary, Harpergun.

I'll add that we seemed to treat it as a Michael Mouse game. If we were serious we're bottom 4 standard. But who's worried?

We continue to miss unmissable goals and when blokes take a mark on a slight angle they insist on making it worse by running to the boundary line. Where's the professionalism????

I didn't see anyone in our side who has improved as much as Dalhouse. Judging by the way we coped with him, we're going to have trouble with any fast small forwards who play up in the midfield. Nahas, Milne, Rioli etc.

After a pre-season of intensive skill work the delivery into the forward line has improved to ****ing ****house. Shows how bad it was last year.

When Wellsy and Boomer came on they lifted our skill and class levels by about 1000%. No exaggeration.

Overall, I was really looking forward to it and then before long I was bloody glad it was over.

Gotta love this afl.com.au summation...

"The result would have been much closer had the Bulldogs been more accurate with their set shots. They blazed 0.9.16 (70) to the Roos 1.11.18 (93) at Eureka Stadium."

Now I'm no mathematician, but bugger me if we didn't "blaze" more inaccurate set shots than the Bulldogs as the scoreline suggests.

I'm surprised they didn't go with "the Bulldogs let a great opportunity slip to put some percentage on the board, had they converted all 25 scoring shots as SUPER goals". I am just glad to have got within a hundred of them :thumbsu:

I like this photo, great grab from Black.....

what i noticed after a very good soapy at christin massage;

McIntosh appears useless as a permanent forward
Goldstein still had heaps of hitouts
Bastinac is a gun
Firrito was very good today and offered alot more than anyone looking to take his place.
Atley is the worst kick in AFL football, honestly tell me some one who is worse? (not Thomas), essenscum laughing at us:(
Thomas, AFL footballers do not miss goals from 10meters out straight infront( i am happy to be tested personaly from 25 out straight infront!!!!)
Harvey legend nuff said
I;m loving Tarrant, could be a great foil for drew
personaly not happy with Wright off half back, offers more forward
Harper, i love him but just doesnt get into the game enough
Mac kenzie like his poise
Adams effing gun
Campbell offers way more than thomas, but see harper comments
Greenwood solid
Wells nice start congrats, i'm sure he would have been a little cautious

kicking in from full back still looks like a nightmare, no improvement
field kicking generally poor
opposition seem to bring the ball in from a kick in very easy

that will do....:footy:

He wasn't near the worst kick on the ground today, let alone the worst "in AFL football".

North seemed to adopt a "play on at all costs" game style for this one. I also don't recall seeing one north player kick the ball backwards all game. Did I miss anything? The dogs did it a few times. Might be a sign of things to come this year with some genuine tall marking targets (Petrie, tarrant, black, Edwards, mcintosh) inside 50.

An unhappy Scott was miffed by the contested ball count - 133 to 101 in favour of the Bulldogs - on a day when three of the Doggies' best in-close players, Matthew Boyd, Daniel Cross and Adam Cooney, were rested.

When you get beaten as badly as we did in contested possession, that's always a concern,'' said Scott. ''We've got to have a look at why that was. That's the main thing that stands out. When you lose contested possession by 30, you generally lose the game.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/win-but-no-contest-20120311-1uskv.html

So how did the meat grinder of Cunners, Greenwood, Patch and the Zbull lose the contested possession count? I saw that Griffen, Dalhous and Libba II were good, but were they that good?

The good news is that it's still preseason and Bon now has some stats to motivate the players to work harder in that area. Let's hope that, which is usually a strength of ours, is well and truly sorted by the time the real stuff kicks in.

please name the worst???, i honestly do not know a worse kick?, i'm talking accuracy, penetration, field position, kick to advantage any way you call it???????:(

Urqs hardly nailed his kicks. In fact, he kicked like crap. Spud on occasion as well. LT kicked for goal like the ball was getting caught in a tractor beam which forced it wide.

Likewise the Dogs' Clay Smith, who was said to have a disposal accuracy of 38% at halftime (from memory).

Atley nailed that goal. That one feat alone bars him from the list of worst kicks.

I see where he is coming from, had they kicked 25 supergoals straight they would have won by 132 points. We were lucky. :stern look

I thought we were outstanding in patches today, and aside from that I don't know what you can really take out of game that wasn't for four points, and in which we didn't start some relative unknowns - Wells, Harvey, Swallow and McKenzie (who are these chaps again?) until half time. No Drew Petrie, Scott McMahon, and Rampaging Lachlan Hansen either.

Some shit you can wrap your mits around:

Cunning is cherry ripe, and I presume caught the train to Ballarat, because he has ****ing arrived.

Atley is a step up on last year, and is a superb user. Really toey for pace and a good user in traffic. I have no ****ing idea what roosmad is on about, and assume he (roosmad that is) was drunk the entire match.

Ziebell - how good is Jack Ziebell?

Liam Anthony looked like a blonde, flashy ball magnet we picked up a few years ago and disappeared from view after a horrendous shoulder injury? Anyone remember who that kid was? Don't piss yourself if Anthony gets a go round 1 - he's there and about.

Spud is ****ed. I love Spud, but unless he suddenly discovers a yard he needs to get a whole ****ing lot better with his disposal, because he is looking shit. No offence Spud fans (including myself), but he is shaping as this year's Pratt.

Adams was good early, as was Campbell later on. Dalaney showed a bit, and I am still unimpressed with Tarrant, but Big Men Do Take Time.

I like Black. I'd like to see how he went with a whole game at FF just belting out leads. Edwards looks set for another good season.

Thomas is still kicking like a mule, but his effort is still decent.

McIntosh looks the goods too.

Haprer is superb, and Sammy Wright is a god. How sweet is shit looking that we can afford to play these guys at either end of the ground and the midfield is too strong to allow them in permanently?

Massive negative, and the only thing I am in any way concerned about after that is that out kick ins - both as an offence and a defence - are shitful. They are the only thing which has not come on at all after the removal of Three Times A Laidley.

Can we fix this shit up please? I remember being at training mid week early last season and watching kick in training. The team kicking in turned it over every single time. We suck at this. Please fix whoever is backlin coach FFS.

Another minor concern is getting done on the break, it happened a bit yesterday and happened a bit against Richmond too.

Otherwise I have watched two games worth of footy so far this preseason and the thing I can confidently say is that we have the makings of a quality midfield that will work for us for the next decade.

What is not to be excited about with that?

They also failed to mention, the free kicks that weren't paid. Rougheads ruck work was laughable and how Goldy didnt receive at least 3 free kicks from ruck infringements has got me beat.

Two performances that disappointed me were those of Cunnington and Atley.

Cunners may have done some nice things today but he also got his arse handed to him in the stoppages by Wallis and Libba. For a player who is supposedly renouned for his clearance work and toughness he needs do much more in that area if he is going to be a good AFL midfielder.

Atley does not have a great feel for the game yet which leads to him getting caught or being put under pressure too often. He needs to generate a better game sense if he is going to reach the heights we want him to. If we could smash Atley and Bastinac together in the Large Hadron Collider we would have the ultimate midfielder.
