You should never post straight after a loss like that so I thought I would wait a while. Sadly the light of day has not given me any more clarity nor dulled my anger so I now have to get this off my chest.

Luke Ball. While I hate to concede anything to Collingwood supporters if any follower of the Saints does not think that this entire episode was an absolute disaster for us then you are delusional. Lyon’s stubbornness in refusing to give him ground time when he was amongst our best players last year may have cost us the 2009 GF (may have - not did). To then lose him was disappointing. To lose him to Collingwood, a team whose p’ship window was wide open was shameful. To lose him for NOTHING is f*#@ unforgivable. Just think about it. A bloke taken at # 2 who despite his obvious deficiencies still gave his heart and soul to the club is gone and we get zero. And then the obvious replacement is given little opportunity, as various ‘role players’ are preferred. How much easier would it have been for Lenny to have another inside mid to share the grunt work? When this sorry saga played out I had a sick feeling it would come back and bite us. To see him play like he has over the course of the year and then turn it on yesterday was almost too much for me to bare. We can say all we want about our bottom 6, our wonky kicking, our lack of pace etc etc but allowing players of the calibre of Luke Ball to simply walk out the door for nothing was what really hurt us.

As this year went on it was more and more evident Ball was exactly what Collingwood needed. A fair few outside running type players so for him to come in and do all the grunt work really helped. As a Carlton supporter it pained me to see them hit the top of the ladder and power to the flag. Bad luck guys but let's hope the pies get knocked off next year.

Bad luck guys, I really feel for you. Always had a soft spot for the Saints and would love to see you win a premiership one day. 2011 to St Kilda, then 2012 onwards for the Dees. ;)

I know how every one of you Saints supporters feel. Geelong went through this heartache from 89 - 95 stumbling at the last hurdle. Even went through it again in 2008 losing to that stinking carcass of a club..the Dawks. I hated StKilda losing yesterday and really felt bad that it was the Saints that lost to Geelong last year. I even hated seeing Stan Alves being tortured by the stinkin crows in 97. I just hope you guys can make amends next year and finally get some peace in your lives. God knows you deserve it.

wow - we smashed you both by about 50 points and your claiming bad luck! LOL

It took you 8 quarters. A usual bounce would more than likely have delivered us a second flag and ended your dream, so I think it's a fair point.

That or you could just move to Queensland or Sydney. They couldn't give a rat's arse about the footy :D

Hey I live up here and I care!:)

Last year was much worse.

I said after 5 minutes to the guy next to me we were going to get walloped. The Footy Gods had come to play for the Pies.

You won a premiership 3 years prior to that Grand Final.
Shhhh...shutuuup.

I'm I the only one that finds the pain the same right now almost more than it was on Saturday. It's a strange feeling, but after getting so close in the drawn Grand Final, I keep thinking what might have been in that game. It's really bugging me.

Honestly, just bring on the 2011 AFL season and put us Saints fans out of our misery. I can't be bothered waiting for the summer to pass and seeing Ricky Ponting cost us another Ashes with his terrible captaincy decisions.

Yeah, hard not to think back to that drawn GF more and more now and think about what if? Especially the last 5 minutes when we had a number of opportunities to win the game and had all the momentum.

After that game I was annoyed we didn't win it but relieved that at least we hadn't lost and still had another chance. Now after what happened in the replay, I'm even more annoyed we didn't take our chances in that first GF when we had Collingwood on the ropes.

The replay gave Collingwood a chance to regroup and fix any problems they had in the first GF, they were also fresher with less injury problems going into that second game. I think the comeback in the first game really took it out of us both physically and mentally and it was always going to be hard to back up a week later.

It was more shock and anger at first after we lost, now the disappointment starts to hit home. Probably going to hurt for a long while yet, at least until next season. Just seems unfair that we have to go through this two years in a row.

I can't escape this dread that I'll never, ever see it happen.

Sure i'm young and it's mostly the negativity talking, but it seems so out of reach every time, it seems like something that happens to every club except the Bulldogs Freo and Us.

I just hate thinking we might never experience it.

lol dont put freo in the same catagory as you lot, we've only existed for 15 years, which is almost nothing compared to st. kilda. we'll def. win 1 in the next 5 years, count on it.

Lol yourself. You think all the up and coming young teams, Collingood ( up and here ) , Carlton, Melbourne , Essendon, Richmond, Suns etc, will just take a number for a premiership win.
Good luck in your quest, but its no sure thing.

45 years and counting for me my man. PAIN!

When you've lost 3 grand finals in a row like we did then you can talk about the 'pain.

throw in the 2002 and 2003 losses for more pain.

We've been there and we know what your going through.

I want to know if my 'experiences' as one might call it are similar.

After the first Grand Final I was spent. For days i bludged around my place and around work barely doing anything/saying anything.

When BJ booted the goal I thought we were there...Tears streaming down my face I thought we had finally reached nirvana...it felt good.

Then the draw...

However by the time the second version of the grand final came around (prior to the game) I was fairly laconic, a bit 'meh' about it...I wanted a result and I could barely watch the game from the first bounce as I purely was not interested...I just wanted a result

Not wishing to try and out pain you D2D, you have a sampling, but no real idea.

1 flag v 15
wealth v poverty
control of afl administration v zero influence
media positive bias v media negative bias
fixture,
Anzac day
etc. etc.

It will also mean that you will only have a sampling of the ecstasy that we will feel when we win the big one. When Red Bull marked and kicked that goal belief ran through my body for the first time. End result PAIN!

I have never cried tears of joy before but it amazing.

Hah, like you can talk about pain at all.

Collingwood fans think they have some right to be tragics, yet they should stop having a sook and appreciate what they've seen.

In fairness to Collingwood supporters they know all about the pain of losing GFs. Not sure on the stats but they have probably lost more than any other club, certainly in the last 40 or so years.

Having said that, at least most of them have seen them win two flags in 1990 and this year. Most St Kilda supporters haven't seen us win one and to make it worse all our GF losses have been so agonisingly close. In 1997 and 2009 the game was up for grabs at 3/4 time only for us to get overrun in the last quarter. This year we were virtually one decent bounce away from winning the drawn GF.

For supporters that have been so short on premiership success it has been heartbreaking and I don't think anyone but St Kilda supporters could really understand what it feels like. I still have a horrible hollow, empty feeling in the pit of my stomach which I'm sure is shared by the players and everyone involved with the club.

The only way to get rid of that feeling would be to win next year, which I can't say I'm all that confident about.
