This one is going to take me a while to get over I think. 186 was better than this.
We were on the verge on finals before that game, the fact that 6 years have passed and I still look back on that as the single worst moment i've witnessed in Melbourne's history says it all really. We had nothing at all to look forward to in 2012, I can assure you that was much worse.

Thats one of the biggest disappointments really. Record membership, record attendances and we put up with this shit.
Yeah it's no doubt disappointing, but i'm trying to find a positive here haha. I would write about the negatives but i'm sure there is a character limit

No way Striker, did you see yesterday how the Suns kicked 20 pints for the whole game? They lost by 115 points. That is 12 GOALS better than 186. Hopefully this week end is some final residual product of the losing culture that has haunted the club since that debacle. That was the lowest point. I'm sticking my neck out and saying we won't be feeling this much pain again for a while. Like you said above, we've had some pretty shit luck this year too.

186 was diffused. It was almost surreal. It also had a result - you knew the coach was getting sacked.

This was the best season we have put up simce 2006 and come the end of it all we missed by 2 straight kicks. What a ****ing nightmare.

Finals really don't mean jack if you can't win them, and given our form over the last five weeks of the season, we weren't going to win one. This season won't be recalled with much fondness by any Dees supporter, but hopefully it spurs the players on to greater things. We got to play the long game here. Tough day though mate, I agree with you on that.

It was the best season we've had since then by a long shot but most players are either sore or tired. Jones's interrupted season has finally caught up with him, likewise with Gawn who isn't even a shadow of his former self. Have a look at some of the young guys that carried a huge chunk of the load early in the season, Petracca, Hunt and Hannan all have had great seasons but they need more conditioning, and then you have guys that have completely fallen out of form at the wrong time (Watts, Vince, Frost and Garlett). Considering how pragmatic our season has been compared to last year, it's amazing we managed to win 2 more games. If anything we've managed to breathe more life in Pedo and Watts early on when Gawn was injured, reinvent T Mac as a forward due to hogans year and given guys like Hannan and Petracca valuable midfield minutes.

beating collingwood was never gonna be simple (they underachieved this year and could have made the 8). you guys still deserved 8 and whoever made that "11 years Melbourne finally makes the finals"thread, you jinxed it.

In such an even season injuries can make all the difference. Look at Sydney. Any team that lost it's key forward or ruck for half the season would've struggled.

I mean even during games you were unlucky. This couple of injuries versus Tigers cost you as did Hogan's hammy against the Pies. Don't think you're that far off. A top 10 pick and possibly Lever and you're a top 6 chance.

Definitely wasn't one of us.

Surely some good material for a Supermercado sequel.

I'll be writing it dangling off the Westgate, with a laptop extension cord stretching back to the Todd Road service station.

**** a duck I'm flat.

Lowest margin of percentage to miss out on finals ever. We do love to set records.

Ummm we have been poor this year on many occasions. Like the poster said, we've only played two or three games with guts and determination and any sort of physicality.

We could beat Port, but we'd be flogged by 80 plus if we played any other finalist in the top 4, hell, the Dons smashed us too.
Most of us truly believe we are a soft club with soft players and a soft coaching panel and a soft corperate ruling body who cares more about profit than results.

We bradburied this finals, absolutely we did.
You're still there though. You still had to have a win by a specific margin which you achieved. I can't help but think that drove your group. Yeah you have been poor a lot, but at the end of the day you're playing finals and that's all that matters. I'll back you against Port, reckon you'll roll them.

Ironically I'm pretty sure the Crows had pick 10 in 2014 before they traded down to pick 14 where they took Lever. Beyond depressing that it's the last weekend of August and the only thing we have to look forward to now is seeing how little we can get away with trading for Lever.
Well Frost has gone missing so it looks like we are in the box seat for Lever. I am hoping we get him. We can send Bernie Vince back to Adelaide as well. The sooner some hard calls are made the better.

In the end we didn't deserve it. Only won 4 of the first 9 games and did the same in the last 9. No real 4 quarter performance for the year other than the Bulldogs game and losing to Freo, North x2, Hawthorn and Collingwood when they were missing 8 from their best 22 confirms we weren't good enough. While there were some good games for us we never seemed to really destroy a team or shut the gate until very late in the piece. The way we started against St Kilda (round 21) and Port we looked we would by a hundred - we were also ahead by enough against Freo, Richmond and Geelong to shut the gate. So many lost opportunities and too many times where it took being down by a significant margin for us to wake up. All in all a pretty mediocre season with a real kick in the guts to finish.
