The Pies/Bombers ANZAC day game is just a H&A game between two teams I Hate

You seem genuinely upset that I dont care about ANZAC Day. Why cant you just enjoy the game for what it is?
I don't care about who plays Anzac Day. The game is separate from the sentiment of the day. You could play GWS and the Suns, the ceremony before the game will still be equally important. Once the ball bounces, then that's a game, nothing more.

There is no need for that pomp at all. I am not a war monger and hate the fact that countries need to celebrate men killed for no reason than some speed freaks megolamanic ways. But thats a different topic.

Its a cringeworthy day for me and a lot of people.
how is it cringeworthy? what an idiotic comment..

its a day to remember the men and women who are the reason we can live our lives today with freedom.

Rotate Good Friday?

I think Good Friday football would have to exist first. If North does get it next year, I'd be very happy to see it rotated if ANZAC day and such were rotated as well.

Ahhh.

So you're prepared to accept a permanent fixture for North on Good Friday?

I would suggest to the people commenting on this who have never experienced the ANZAC match that maybe you should, there is absolutely nothing like it, do we hear South African or Indian cricket fans complaining that only Australia and England play for the ashes or in Rugby that Australia and New zealand play for the Bledisloe cup? Get over it, appreciate it for what it is and that is without doubt the biggest home and away game of the season.
Yes because International contests are the exact same at club level.

That argument is more flawed the our video review system.

Keeping ANZAC Day fixed between Collingwood & Essendon makes sense.

It works and in isolation doesn't compromise the draw . . . sorry 'fixture'. It's a big enough and successful enough event to justify keeping it as it is. My problem is it's currently part of an inherently unfair method of scheduling games.

However it's a one off, so even with a consistent draw it could still be scheduled without impacting on the rest of the schedule.

I want Saturday afternoon games all year. Very unpopular, TV hates them... Perfect. Real football time

I understand the hype, but yeah, players seem to get given credit for performing on the day, and Hird even gets acknowledged as a however many time Anzac day medallist. Really, it's no more auspicious than the Hird/Archer Medallist or the Parkin Medallist, or the Ross Glendenning medallist or whatever stupid medal each club has for cups/games played between two teams.

Overall, I like the day, but it's still just a Home and Away game and not worth anymore or any less than 4 points (unless there is a draw, then it's only worth two points.....but you get my drift).

That being said, I think the clubs do it very well.

Because despite you trying to pretend otherwise it is in fact a big game and a special event. Every player who has played in it (and made a GF) has said it is 2nd to playing in a GF even beating out other finals. It also attracts many neutrals to the game/event itself who regularly like to attend.

Certain players lift in big games, the hype surrounding it adds finals type pressure, the medal has become prestigious award both between the two clubs and media.

Btw the other clubs who play on the day also award the medal for their respective game.

This thread remind's me of a jealous kid having a whinge.

Remember though, the game has a different feel when its your own club. South Africans aren't force fed the Ashes, and the English don't care about the Bledisloe cup.

Not going to lie, Its a great event. But its not for everyone.

90,000 people at the best stadium in australia, the last post is incredible and the roar after the anthem is bigger than almost every other, including most finals. It is a terrific atmosphere where often(not always) it is a terrific game. No one claims the actual game is worth more than four points, and no one compares the players efforts to those of soldiers, the only ones who bring it up are people like you who like an argument.
No other event is better on the home and away calender than this and it is even better than the majority of finals, and it is getting bigger every year these days.

The build up and ANZAC ceremonies are brilliant, but soon as the game starts its just another home and away, nothing special. Four other Melbourne based teams could be involved and it would be just as effective.
The only difference is that the atmosphere is 10x better.

Yes yes, and every player that has played in a showdown or Derby would say they are second only to Grand Finals in intensity and pressure etc etc, and that it takes good players to step up in the game etc etc.

I'm sure it is prestigious between the clubs and the media, well they'll jump on anything they can.

As I said in my post, I think the two clubs do the day very well and show the appropriate respect for the day. I think that the hype around the medal is crap and really just a flog fest for the media to hype up.

How prestigious can a medal be when it can only be won by one of 44 players in any season. The norm smith, brownlow, coleman, AFL MVP are open to players of all clubs and are won after a season of hard work and toil. This is a medal awarded for the player that apparently exemplifies the player who showed the most amount of courage, team work, selflessness etc etc, yet more often than not goes to the player who has the most posessions or the most goals.

For the record, I usually watch the footy on Anzac day, unless I go to the local races. It's normally a good game and both sides lift, but it's no better game than Hawthorn v Geelong, West Coast v Freo, Adelaide v Port, Carlton Collingwood, Richmond Carlton etc etc. Saying it is just sounds like a spoilt kid that is unhappy that his 'big day' isn't seen as such by many

Creates massive awareness for the diggers and all they did for this great country

Pins are sold diggers receiving standing ovations

Really can not understand the hate

Why does it rate much higher than any other HaA game then? Your Monday game couldn't even rate a million and struggled to net a crowd of 80k, Anzac Day sold out last Friday and averages 90k with many people unable to get tickets, it's seen as a big day by more than not.

It's massive.

Multiple times better than the reverse fixture.

Chuck any two Vic teams on the MCG on Anzac Day and it would be massive.

About time it was shared around.

The day is special, not the clubs.

I just said it's shared around, Anzac day is not exclusive to Melbourne or the MCG. You've got your remembrance and bugles and minutes silence at the other games as well.
