A bit of white privilege.

A Fortunate Life is worth adding to your reading list.

They had it easy by then, back in early Victorian times, they still didn't have sewers.
So every house had a "cess pit " in the cellar, and the crap would leach into the subterranean water supply, contaminating the wells used for drinking water.
The sewers were built to get rid of the smell, which is how they thought Cholera was transmitted back then, but they worked at stopping the contamination anyway.
They were a pretty amazing engineering feat.

Meanwhile in Melbourne much later, the 1950s weren't exactly like an episode of happy days in some of the inner city areas.

My nan was born in 1901 and remembered opium dens, open sewers in Melbourne and humpys on Kew boulevard.

Do any of you guys know much about the 1959 (under 19's I think) Premiership team? I met a woman a few months ago who was married to one of the players. I can't really remember the surname, it was something like Thorogood or Horegood or something like that. She told me he made the senior list but I can't find the guy anywhere on AFLTables.
In her garage she has a fantastic 1966 team photo signed by about 5 or 6 players.

Ian Thorogood? Played for Melbourne and played in the 1959 VFL Grand Final

Maybe that's the one I'm thinking of lol, is there much info on it? She told me the St Kilda museum had a bit of info on it

I have a terrible memory at the best of times
I take pride in my snooping ability. Was searching around as soon as I saw your original post lol. Found this photo of that team before the '57 U19 GF.

Also, if they aren't in AFL Tables, they didn't play a game. So he very well could've been signed but just never played a senior game.

Names starting with K back then you're probably looking at Keith Hopgood or something haha

K.Hopgood ?
Hopgood is the guy. Unfortunately he died a couple of years ago before I had the chance to meet him. Apparently that Premiership team met up every year.

Funnily enough his wife was a one eyed Carlton supporter. I told her I didn't like it, but I had to admire that she stuck with her team despite the overwhelming reasons to jump ship.

Happy to be of service :moustache:

Unreal the people you run into or the things you find people have stored away. Family friend of mine still had a entry ticket to the '66 GF in storage in his shed and gave it to me last year. Just incredible

Next time I see her I'll ask her how much to buy the '66 signed photo. Pretty sure she has a guernsey in storage too, which would be nuts

My new Les Paul is an absolute beast of a guitar.

Can't put it down.

I may never buy another guitar.......
I said the same about my Les Paul, that was about 5 guitars back.

You'll be back..........

Show me your guitars mate
Excuse me, I'm trying to run a respectable football forum over here, not some lascivious wooden stick romp. Stop it, and stop it immediately.

Port Melbourne had a slums until the 1950s where people lived in corrugated tin shelters. Collingwood and Fitzroy were slums too.
