One less since both sides started their run of contending this century (2004 for Geelong, 2013 for Richmond). Richmond have hit their 10 year wall (Geelong hit this in 2013), it'll be interesting to see if they can bounce back quickly or if they'll need to wait another couple of generations (i.e the post 80s effect).
Richmond had 3 out of 4. Cats had 3 out of 5.

Just peak efficiency

But it lead to 4 flags and 6 grand finals over a 15 year stretch - which is a fair chunk of one's life to be satisfied with your team. You're right that 3 grand finals for 3 flags in 4 years is efficient - but it's a whole lot of time in between to barely ever even make finals.

I wouldn't even worry too much. It's very, very rare to have a run like Richmond's from the mid 80's until 2016. It surely won't happen a second time right after one brief period of contending.

Hey mods… can’t it just go in this thread…

Geelong because theyve shown they can sustain their list over the long term to remain competitive.
Richmond had a purple patch as they were on the bottom for a very long time and lucked out on getting the Cochin, Martin , Jroo and a few other picks to form a core group . Now that era is over they likely fade back into obscurity... Even Hardwick knew this and hence jumped from the sinking ship.

This is a ridiculous argument without evidence, list comparisons and facts. I have no idea about Geelongs youth no more than the majority of Geelong (or other opposition supporters) would have about Richmonds. Even if we have the lists profiles, we have no idea which players will out perform expectations and who will completely under perform.

We can speculate as much as you like but its all guess work

Geelong will make finals sooner because of 10 games at GMHBA. Also Sam Walsh is out of contract end of 2026 so could be key to a top 4 push in a few years

If (and it's a big if) Sam De Koning can get back to 2022 form, and Jack Henry can stay injury free, our defence and forward line are pretty set for next year to be competitive. Midfield is the big question mark - how does Cam Guthrie come back? What role will Danger play? Natural improvement from Bruhn, Clark and other young players? What will the ruck situation be? Do we get another top 10 pick or trade for Smith/Crouch?

I think we'll be rebuilding on the fly as we have done for the last 10 years and we will be looking to compete at the same time.

Don't know enough about Richmond's young players, but it sort of looks similar to Hawthorn 2018 (?) when they traded for Mitchell and O'Meara with Taranto and Hopper.

I can say, without reservation, that the absolutely tedious mud-flinging between Richmond and Geelong supporters has mostly driven me away from this site. I don't get it. I don't even see us as rivals yet there's carry-on here like we're Port vs. Adelaide. It's just footy. Most of us are adults. No supporter-base has ONLY GOOD PEOPLE or ONLY BAD PEOPLE. This stuff is so stupid.

In answer to the OP, both clubs are doomed and will never win another game. For this year, at least.

We've already begun the rebuild, really. Focussed on the draft and trading in young players over the last couple of years.

Admittedly it was somewhat enforced, but we've often had starting midfields of Atkins, Bruhn, Holmes and whichever senior mid wasn't injured at the time. People sometimes forget the latter two are still 20-21.

Ollie Henry's kicked 41 goals as a 20 year old. Miers has gone from being role player to arguably favourite for our B&F. Blokes like Zuthrie, SDK, Jack Henry, Stengle, and Close are all established best 22. A few older blokes are gradually being eased out and replaced by younger equivalents.

And most if not all of Knevitt, Dempsey, Conway and Neale should be looking at transitioning into best 22 by the end of next season injury permitting.

It's interesting to see how Hawkins and Danger go next year...
Add to that Duncan won't be far away as will Guthrie...

I actually feel like Geelong are 2 years behind Richmond in terms of losing their aging stars.

If Geelong bounce back quicker it will be a great job IMO because they will be supposedly starting the rebuild after us.

We've already started bringing in the young talent. 4-5 of them played in a final last year if my memories any good. And we debuted 5 or this year. So we are on the right path, even if we don't have a high pick this year. It's just getting games into them and seeing if they are any good.

Geelong look better placed now, but I fell that they will still need to go back when they lose 4-5 senior players in the next year or two.

What's Tigers most pressing need at the moment?

Hawkins, Duncan, Tuohy, Blicavs, Danger, Stanley, Stewart, Gutherie, Rohan, Atkins

All players who will retire in the next 1-3 seasons.

Cameron, Kolo, Bews 4-5 if not earlier.

They have 1 pick in the top 50 this year.

Cats rebuild not even close to starting. They are a bit unlucky as probably are down the bottom when Tassie compromises the draft. But they won a flag so was worth it.
