Callums_Guns.
One of the most engaging, respected, and hard-working posters league-wide. You would be hard-pressed to find anybody that had anything negative to say about Callums_Guns. Hard-pressed.
You would have to say that CG's Sweet FA career so far has been a successful one. Callums_Guns joined the league in Season 27, and won the Mount Buller Demons' best rookie award that season. CG won the Deestroy Medal (Demons' B&F) the following season, combined with All-Sweet FA selection in Seasons 28 and 29. In Season 31, the Demons won their third premiership. CG played wing in that team.
According to my own infallible analysis, of the 2,081 players to have played the game up until the end of Season 31, Callums_Guns ranked second ever statistically (50 game minimum, after only Tonga Bob).
Last season, Callums_Guns notched up game 100, and we celebrated in equal measure to how we celebrated pantskyle's 300th. It was massive.
And now, for Season 33, CG has been named as co-captain of Mount Buller - the 20th captain in our history - alongside long-time skipper manangatang.
What an achievement. What a rise.
The ever-selfless CG was kind enough to lend me some time recently to answer some questions. Please enjoy, and join me in congratulating our dear friend Callums_Guns on such a wonderful career to date, and on such a wonderful appointment.
H: Guns, congratulations on the co-captaincy. You definitely deserve it after culturally leading the Demons for many seasons. How are you feeling about the role, and what type of angle are you hoping to bring to the position?
CG: Thanks 'less' !!
To captain any SFA club is an incredible honour and privilege and to lead the team out with with somebody that I have so much respect for is amazing
The role itself could be daunting but I think the work I've done the past couple of seasons has helped to earn the respect of all those within the club. The past 4 seasons have been extremely tough for so many and last season I learnt the most, with so many away and trying to step up to fill the void where I could it gave me great appreciation for all those that have done the work in the past
In regards to what angle I will bring to be honest not too much will change. I take great pride in whoever is active needs to be included, the squad is the team ! Participation, enjoyment is paramount.
The work ethic will still be there in the position but I think this season the workload will be more balanced across the team and it's something it took a little to get use to but we are in one of the best positions we have been for quite some time
H: You mentioned the "squad is the team" type attitude, and you're well known around the league for including others and keeping them engaged. Where did that come from? Did you feel the same in your first season or two?
CG: That type of attitude most likely comes from what I do outside of Big Footy, so I brought some of that into the game of Qooty
First season or 2 feels so long ago, can't imagine how you feel
I think I felt the same way back then but really didn't find my feet until the 2nd or 3rd season, didn't know what was going on at the start
The rookie crop in my first season was pretty average compared to others and the Dee's didn't even have a team pm so was fairly lost at first
H: Along that line, what would be your best advice for new players (maybe first to third season players) in the league? I agree that everything can be very confusing initially - particularly these days with such saturation of media and match thread posting.
CG: Biggest advice don't take things personally, it's a banter forum and for the most part banter is against the persona / or team not the person so enjoy the place for what it is
New players will find the longer they stay in the League they will see past the banter and see the community side of the league. We all know when required to put the banter aside and support each other, I don't think there is another section on Big Footy that has a sense of community about it like the SFA
In regards to the saturation of media and match threads don't be over whelmed with it all, find what interests you and reply to those there is no need to reply to all threads. However the volume of threads change weekly what may seem high 1st rounds 1-3 may drop off in the middle section of the season
H: Excellent - I think that's good advice, particularly the part about not needing to respond to everything. It turns into a full time job when you try to.
Going back to your career specifically now, what have been some of the highlights? You've won several club awards and a premiership - what tops the list currently?
CG: I think individual awards are
What tops the list though would have to be the S31 Premiership win against Baghdad, we just fell short in my first couple of seasons. They are hard to win and and was one of the most enjoyable threads I've been a part of
H: Ah, yes. Your 100 game milestone thread. Sorry about that.
One last question to finish up - if you could successfully recruit three players from other teams across the league to the Demons, who would they be and why?
CG: Three players only that's tough we might need a second team out of Buller
Tony Lynn 15 is someone I get along well with outside of Buller. He doesn't mind the rough stuff in match threads, creates well researched media (Hi Jim) and we haven't had anyone raise the elbows in a match thread since Oddhawk in the S31 Grand Final (However sante has been unbelievable lately around the club)
TheInjuryFactory outside of mang is the number 1 in the game for his Photoshop skills, my work in that area is extremely . I said in 2021 I would like to improve my game in this area but now it will most likely be 2023 at best
Tigerturbulance is hardworking, can create some of the best media in the league with his podcasts and he's another that can bring the biff when required
Add the Eshays and sign up GUH as well, he adds so much to the league
Could keep going.........
H: Love your work, mate. Thanks for your time and congratulations again on your appointment as co-captain of the Demons.
