The SCG - fit for purpose?

This is the biggest load of horse shit. There is no way when the ground is correctly marked out for an afl fixture that there is only a 2.5 metre discrepancy from the centre circle to the goal line.
The scg is quite wide but it's nowhere near as long as the g. There would be a good 8-10 metre difference goal line to goal line
The 50m lines and square have been measured and shown to be correctly marked.

It used to be about 12m shorter than the G but they added a few metres each end when they did the 2 new grandstands the last 10 or so years. I believe it's now 6m difference, 161m vs 155m. You can measure it on Google Earth. It just looks shorter on TV due to the low camera position.

160 goal to goal vs. 155 goal to goal.

Pretty shit situation for all clubs involved

Esp. with the Wanderers getting new stadium as well

In Perth the only thing we have to worry about is Western Force playing at HBF Park the day before a Glory game (and it's Glory's first home game in about 5 weeks so not like the Force could have had it re-scheduled any other time or anything and they basically control the whole competition). For AFL we don't really have much competition for Optus at the time iirc other than the potential of Glory hosting an A-League grand final which will be 18th or 19th of May (West Coast are scheduled the Friday night 17th so no real issue there imo)

Rugby Union kills the pitch way more than any of the other codes and the Tahs games are going to have the biggest impact on the surface at the SCG

With the demolition of the Sydney Football Stadium next door, the SCG will endure a workload not seen there for many years. FOUR football codes will play there, and if the 1st of 26 games there this season is any indication, administraors will need to think fast and do something to prevent a repeat of what happened on Saturday.

Check the table below and have a look at the congestion in April

Saw it getting ripped up in AFL360, what a bloody mess.
To be honest I reckon a tractor pull event would be lighter on the surface than those hulking rugby blockheads.
The SCG surface will be stuffed by Easter.

Absolute non issue the turf only gave up at scrum time. Almost 2 tons of force it has to withstand when the scrum packs. This will never happen for an AFL game and the Tahs only have another 2 games at the SCG this year

If you don't hate McGuire too much, check out the first 10 minutes of his show this morning on triple M. The poor guy sees red whenever the AFL drag their feet on issues such as this, because he's traumatised by what happened at Vic Park back in '99. I remember it too, because I was seated in the front row. On this particular day, the AFL sent two dickheads on to the ground half an hour prior to the opening bounce, to see if the surface was at AFL standard. The ground looked like a bowling green. Absolutely perfection, and yet these two dickheads, pardon me, AFL officials, walked around the boundary staring at the grass, wondering if the game should go ahead. It was completely political, and everyone knew it. It was an insult, and McGuire is still scarred by it. Just in case you're wondering why he was so vociferous this morning, that's the reason. He stopped short of calling the AFL a bunch of hypercritical pricks. Instead he said that the AFL should concentrate on the big issues instead of meeting with Robbo to fuel the annual twilight grand final debate.

Robbo is against the twilight Grand Final.

With the closure of Subiaco, the SCG is now the standout worst regular venue to watch a game.

Let's bear in mind that the redevelopment of the SCG took place with a NSW govt cap of 50,000 seats as they wanted to preserve the status of the former Olympic stadium as the state's premier large capacity arena for round surface games.

Shortly after the redevelopment of the SCG was completed the government complied with a request from the NRL to lock the former Olympic stadium as a rectangular venue and unnecessarily remove the equipment that moved the sides in and out. No rational public explanation has ever been given as to why this was done. it affected cricket, Aussie rules and any potential athletic event.

Sure, some did not like the arena. but the transport is great, the viewing positions better than the SCG, the capacity is very good.

I thought ANZ was a terrible ground to watch AFL Live personally.

Scg should not even be used for afl because-
1. It's far too small. With new kick in rules players will kick out past the centre of the ground
2. Tv broadcast of any game are far too low so as a viewer you can't tell how close the ball is to the boundary line on the other side to the camera

Maybe this ******* up will force afl to move games from there in future
Not mentioned enough. Surely, decades on, Sydney officials should be pushing hard on this. I did read that the height of the cameras were affected by some difficulty but surely something can be done. If you're trying (in vain, obviously) to convert the biggest population in Australia to the game, surely you would make it as pleasing as possible to watch

Honestly why the **** are the Sydney rugby codes playing there?

There's a number of other rectangle stadiums in the city that are viable options.

The turf isn't the problem, it looks magnificent, it's ******* rugby thats the problem.
It was the home of Rugby League a long time before the AFL rocked up in Sydney. Including some of the most iconic games in the sports history.

The MCG was North's home ground at one point as well.

Key word being, was.

There's literally a dozen other local grounds big enough to cater for pretty much all the rugby sides given their low attendances.

such a simple solution, erect some scaffolding behind the ladies stand to have cameras at a better height.

edit: like this

current camera angle is at one of these red X's - cant recall which one - far too low and makes ground look congested and small

Actually it's smack bang in the middle of Sydney, give or take a few kms.

5mins walk from the station to the stadium.

5 minutes walk is still 'too far' for all the fat lazy ****s who want to be able to drive and park everywhere. its the same argument people use for why princess park couldnt be used as a boutique stadium because there arent enough car parks, despite being served by 2 completely separate tram lines and a train station that is a back breaking 10-15 minute walk away.
