Round 2 – thewizardmelon
Coney Island Warriors : 16.6.102 defeated by Gumbies FFC : 18.9.117

The Warriors stayed at home this week to welcome the Gumbies, a team buoyed by early pundits as one of the favourites to take home the minor premiership. Can the now infamous warriors finally put something in that empty trophy cabinet, instead of having to fall back on ‘individual accolades’ to perk themselves up?

Well, this game was topsy turvy and the impossible was almost pulled off. The Gumbots won the early battle and held an 8pt lead, which quickly turned into a 35pt lead at the half to the Gumbies. Could the Coney Crew respond? Well they responded by winning the third quarter, and had a valiant 7 goal last term that was the stuff you write about during Grand Final week. But alas, the Gumbies held on in a high scoring affair to win by 2 goals. Is Round 2 too early for what if’s? Only time will tell if this loss will come back to haunt the Warriors, or if they will crash out at the same stage of the finals race in S38

BOG belonged to Ocha905 with 24 disposals, 7 tackles, 3.0 and 111DT. Joining him was @TIF on 21 touches, 8 tackles, 86DT and spudmaster (21 disposals, 6 tackles, 90DT). For the winning side, it was a case of sharing the metaphorical load in this Qooty game, with Brick Loosener (21 disposals, 2.2, 93DT) perhaps best afield, and Dory_77 (80DT) and @NSCROW both chipping in with 3 goals each.

Las Vegas Bears : 17.12.114 defeat Roys FFC : 17.9.111

The Bears and the Roys met with plenty of hope still remaining in the season. Tony and Co had new pre-season workouts, and the Roys had also ‘implemented new game plans’. This game was one for the stalwarts of the game that enjoy a true tussle. After an intense first quarter that was all but level, the Bears kicked away to a small half time lead. Las Vegas continued the pain with 6 more majors in the 3rd, sporting a 46pt lead before the Roys decided to show up. Sadly, they left themselves too much to do, falling short by 3 points in a classic encounter.

Cap (24 disposals, 1.0, 98DT) controlled much of the game for Vegas, to go with @Art_Vandeley (7.1) and MWPP (4.5) combining for a whopping 72 points. For the visitors, SpecialBruce (29 disposals, 1.0 and 98DT) was one of few players who played well for the Roys on gamely.

Baghdad Bombers : 19.10.124 defeated by Gold City Royals FFC : 20.15.135

In what was the actual match of the round, these two spearheads went to war in a 39 goal thriller. The Bombers are well known for high scoring games at home, or close games with late fourth quarter ‘questionable camel tactics’, but here in Season 38, the Royals came to FA and FO.

The Royals were up and about from the get go, taking a first quarter lead before the Bombers woke up. The home team hit back, kicking 7 goals to take a slim 7pt lead into half time. It was the Royals turn again in the 3rd, kicking 7 of their own and a further 4 in the final quarter to outlast the rampaging Bombers. 259points scored, with tomjoad (34 touches, 5 tackles, 2.1., 137DT) and @mcgrath_tr (30 disposals, 2.2, 113DT) strong for the losing side. Nothing kicked 5.1 (54DT) for the visitors and manicpie (30 disposals, 6 tackles, 106DT) the best for the winning side.

Fighting Furies 11.11.77 defeated by Sin City Swamprats : 16.15.111

In perhaps one of the least watched yet most entertaining matches of the round, the Rats travelled to the hippodrome to take on the Furies. Both teams exchange pleasantries in the match thread, before exchanging goals in the first half. The Rats clung to a slim 2 goal lead at the main change and like many other games this round, would hold or or extend their lead in all future quarters.

Future defectee philreich would be BOG with 20 touches, 10 tackles and 101 DT, followed by GotTheGoodes (24 touches, 3 tackles, 80 DT). For the losing team, Frothies Mcveigh had 23 touches, 9 tackles and 94 DT, valiant in the early loss.

Mount Buller 21.7.133 defeat Dragons FFC (10.12.72)

Both teams meet in some form, but with Buller always being a tricky away venue, could the Dragons could up there and come home with a result? In what was another campaign full of hope for the Dragons, the Demons quelled any serious threat early, sporting an 18pt lead and 27pt lead in the first two respective quarters. Their forward line had all the answers as the second half they kicked another 11 goals to win comfortably in the ‘Match of the Round’.

A huge 6 multiple goal scorers saw the Demons share the joy around, with Wosh (2.1, 123DT) and DERO (4.0, 114DT) making the most of the opportunities provided to them. cats2rise and moginie also crossed the ton mark, wile purple Jess (3.2, 78DT) was best afield in a below par Dragons outfit.

OOB 11.37.73 defeated by Tarkyn 12.4.76 (and Hawks 21.8.134)

Just a few days after Paul the Octopus was enlisted to pick the winners (OOB) the OOB set up at home for their premiership defense, having had an opening round bye. They were surprised by the typically mediocre Hawks fast start, exploding out the blocks for a 34pt half time lead. Despite the OOB’s throwing around the magnets, the Hawks continued to roll through the game, giving the OOB no chance whatsoever.

Tarks started a strong campaign with 12?! Snags and 138 DT, followed by TY24 (84 DT) and PhenomenalV1 (81 DT) who also ensured they got their season off to a great start. It's only Round 2, but I'm going to predict a team this good might be able to make a grand final soon, maybe against another fiery team or something? We'll see.

Round 3 – Ocha905
Season 38 Round 3 - East Side Hawks v West Coast Wonders at The Eyrie

Fresh off a mammoth goal haul Tarks and his Hawks were confident of maintaining their top 4 position by dispatching a reeling Wonders side losing a heavy-hearted Grand Uncle Horace tribute game (albeit fresh off a bye). Chat during the week was lively reaching 27 pages with 32 contributors.

Onto the match itself. An even first half found the Wonders overcoming a goal deficit in the 1st quarter to lead by a slim 3pt margin. A six goal to three third quarter in favour of West Coast proved vital as the Hawks tried valiantly to fight back in the last quarter, getting within a goal multiple times. However the Wonders answered every challenge, running our 12pt winners.

Cubs2Lions led the charge with 27 possies and a goal. They were ably supported by Pamcake1 (25 possies, 5 tackles and 2 goals) and Giant YoYo (21 and 2 goals) whilst BFew finished off some great play, kicking 4 from the goal square.

It was an even spread for the Hawks with Callums_Guns playing a great captains game with 24 possies. PhenomenalV1 showed off his wrestling skills with 5 tackles and added 7 points to the scoreboard. Tarkyn_24 would rue his inaccurate goal kicking kicking 4.6 which proved costly.

Season 38 Round 3 - Sin City Swamprats v Ophidian Old Boys at The Underground Stadium MOTR

The reigning premiers hosted an inform Swamprats in a match that lived up to the MOTR billing. The matchday thread was pumping with mammoth efforts from rookie Raz, Demure Princess, Pickett, Robertio, kenneyswarriors, philreich, thewizardmelon, FreoGirl and Serial_thrilla all racking up a ton of contributions (some many more times over).

Matchday was a fitting dot point on festivities with a seesawing encounter. The Swamprats went into the major break with a handy 8pt lead thanks in part to some wayward goal kicking from the Old Boy's. Ophidian must've had an inspiring half time pep talk as they clawed ahead at 3QT before kicking on in the last to run out 24 pt victors.

Some massive fantasy scores were had with BRAB kicking double figures whilst Dingster (31d 9m), U2tigers (10 HO, 28d, 6t) and Braklet (27d, 8t and 1 goal) all had a day out for the Purple and Orange.

GotTheGoodes led Sin City well collecting a massive 38 disposals and 9 marks, supported by jackster83 (23d, 7m and 6t) and okeydoke7 who kept the scoreboard ticking over with 4 goals and 3 behinds.
3 BRAB 2 Braklet 1 GotTheGoodes

Season 38 Round 3 - Baghdad Bombers v Las Vegas Bears at Abdu Prison

The unfortunate Bombers were hoping to get their first win on the board against a Bears outfit coming off a clutch win the previous round... hold this thought.

A lively match thread was lead by Pugsley but featured even contributions with 20 players reaching double digit contributions.

The match itself proved to be a barnburner and will surely fill the coffers of the qooty equivalent of "Name a Game". The Vegans headed into halftime ahead by nine points, ruing that 9 actual kicked behinds were the difference with MWPP (1 goal 4 misses) the prime example of this unusually inaccuracy. The seesawing contest continued right until the final siren with the Bombers leading by 2 pts with less than 5 minutes remaining. Two characteristic behinds by the Bears drew them level with seconds on the clock until this -

4 : 24.47 {C} - Chipmunk's kick is close. A goal!.
Baghdad Bombers : 14.10.94
Las Vegas Bears : 14.16.100
4 : 24.51 {C} - No-one can win the tapout.
=====================================
SIREN SOUNDS FOR THE END OF QUARTER 4
Baghdad Bombers : 14.10.94
Las Vegas Bears : 14.16.100

Game, Set and Match Las Vegas.

For the Bombers there were standout performances from Bovo (29d, 9m) tomjoad (27d, 7m and a goal) and SaintsSeptember (23d, 9t and a goal). Meanwhile the victorious Bears had a more even spread but were inspired by Cap (14 HO, 17d, 6 tackles and 2 goals), Matera92 (19d, 2.1 goals) and the matchwinner Chipmunk (23d, 4m and the most important of goals).

Season 38 Round 3 - Coney Island Warriors v Fighting Furies at Van Cortlandt Park

Both the Warriors and Furies were seeking to bounce back from a loss and get their season kickstarted. The thread was a quality over quantity affair throughout the week, a trademark for both outfits.

Unfortunately for both teams Piggy Smalls got the into the ear of Van Cortlandt Park's groundkeeper and he acquiesced to his preferred environment. That is ALL THE MUD.

As such it was a dour affair with the Furies making better of the conditions, building a comfortable lead and holding off any Wazza efforts to make a game of it, running out comfortable 14pt winners.

For the Furies - omgfridge loves some wet weather footy apparently, playing a starring role (24d, 6m and a goal) whilst crazywildhorse (21d 3m) and rfctigerarmy (18d 2t) had some key moments.
Meanwhile the Warriors had few winners on the day but spudmaster (11 HO, 15d and a goal) TheInjuryFactory (14d, 6t and a goal) and Reginald Perrin (12d 5m and a goal) could all hold their head up high.

Season 38 Round 3 - Roys FFC v Mount Buller Demons at Brunswick Junction Oval

The Roys were seeking their second win against the early flag favourites from Mount Buller in what was hyped as an early potential GF preview.

Much merriment was had throughout the week lead by an OG SFA GOAT (excuse the acronym bloodbath) in Mobbs but Wosh, Gralin, moginie, DERRINALPHIL and sausageroll all got amongst the banter in particular as well.

Onto the game which proved befitting of a heavyweight title fight... for 3 quarters like the 2011 foopy GF. The leads at the first three breaks being 1pt, 2pts and 8pts. In the last quarter Mount Buller showed their premiership pedigree and put their foot down, kicking 8 goals 6 behinds to run away with the match by 40pts.

Leading the charge for the Demons were Cats2Rise (15 HO, 22d, 3 goals), moginie (23d but 8t, 8 FF! and 3 goals), Scythe94 (25d, 10t and 2 goals) and sausageroll who kicked 6 of themself. The Roys were well represented by fitzroybowiedog (16d 10t 6 FF), DERINALPHIL (18 HO, 13d and 4t) and TheGoatBaron who finished off some good Roys play with 4 snags.

3 moginie 2 Scythe94 1 cats2rise

Season 38 Round 3 - Gumbies FFC v Gold City Royals at The House of Gumby

The Gumbies were another team that had a charmed start to the season boasting a perfect record and were hosting a Gold City team that came into the clash with the confidence winning form brings having won a tight clash against Baghdad the week before.

Throughout the week Cadsky Brenton Davy GWS Goose krakouers Zevon and GreyCrow all gave good accounts of themselves in a lively match thread.

Unfortunately the game itself didn't really live up to the quality of posting. In what a rather dour affair (or some might say defensive masterclass!), the Gumbies led at every change and never felt threatened to run out 13pts the victor (71 to 58).

As such the fantasy scores weren't too kind for either team. The Gumbies bests include Falconista with 13 HO's, 16 possies and 6 tackles, Jeremias with 18 possies and 9 marks and GWS Goose bagging 4 goals that proved the difference. On the opposite side manicpie (20p, 7t), Cadsky (17d, 4m and a goal) and Supersuns (3 goals) tried valiantly to will the Royals to victory.

EKA Medal – Manicpie

The EKA Medal is awarded to the best rookie for the season and is determined via a 3-2-1 vote for all nominees by the teams of the Sweet FA, via the committee.

Over the last couple of seasons the Royals, under the leadership of Cadsky, have been working hard to rejuvenate their list and I think they’ll be very proud today to see they have finally nailed the rookie game by bringing to the club the first EKA Medal since Season 16 with manicpie being voted by his peers as the best rookie for Season 38 pairing a pretty decent debut season with some fun and prominent posting.

ManicPie received a total of 19 votes to take out the award but was closely followed by p4p1 of the Demons (16 votes) and a tie for third with 14 votes, Raz of the Swamprats and Giant YoYo of the Wonders.
