So you're telling me that we will play our 2016th game in the 2021 Grand Final? That's 56 games away. Four more games this year, 26 next year, and another 26 in 2021. I like it!

You gotta go back to the turn of the century DW...Melbourne in 2000 went into the finals with 1690 games of experience and went on to lose the GF by a massive margin.

Crows in 97 won the flag with 1534 games experience.

Yes, that's what the AFL Tables website says for the EF, but the AFL Match Centre (which is frustratingly poor on this sort of thing since they "improved" it mid-season ) says the WB only had 4 GAs for the whole match. This sounds about the right number out of 8 goals. So did Bailey Smith provide all four?

Suckling kicked his from outside 50 after taking a few bounces - he got it from Dunkley but probably no GA given anyway since it was in the centre.
McLean intercepted a kick-in after a behind was scored so definitely no assist there.
English ran onto a long ball from Bont, so that should be credited to Bont.
Richards took a mark about 65m out, went back and then ran around the bloke on the mark to create the scoring opportunity - probably no assist there.
Lloyd received a handpass from West, so Rhylee should be credited with the GA there.
Schache - got a free kick for a push in the throat. No GA.
Naughton - one was a free kick off the ball and the other was a mark from a Lipinski kick, so no GA for Smith there.

Doesn't look like Bailey had ANY goal assists.

Someone's definitely stuffed up there! I missed the match and certainly steered clear of any replays so didn't really question it, good work. I'll remove it from my post and will also adjust his goal assists per game stat.

I've been self-teaching R, and one of the many things I've done is explored the AFL equivalent of a "Triple Double". Unfortunately, data pre-AFL era is extremely unreliable, with many metrics like tackles, inside 50s and clearances not being recorded, so it's tough to say whether there's been any further occurrences prior to these ones below. For example, in 1971 Round 7, John Greening is recorded as having 16 marks and 50 disposals, but nothing else. Could very well have been a game that should be included here.

I started with looking at minimum of 10 Marks, Tackles, Inside_50s or Clearances. There's been 4 cases of a "Triple Double" using this definition.

• Patrick Dangerfield, 2016 Round 12 - 13 Marks, 11 Inside 50s, 13 Clearances (from 48 disposals) - this one stood out ahead of all others given that Dangerfield also kicked 2 goals, had 12 Score Involvements and a whopping 1025 metres gained.
• Dayne Zorko, 2019 Round 7 - 11 Tackles, 11 Inside 50s, 11 Clearances (from 29 disposals)
• Andrew Swallow, 2012 Round 8 - 12 Tackles, 10 Inside 50s, 10 Clearances (from 28 disposals)
• Chris Judd, 2011 Round 15 - 10 Tackles, 10 Inside 50s, 11 Clearances (from 31 disposals)

Gary Ablett Jr also came incredibly close to this group, while having a game arguably as good as Dangerfield's. In 2017 Round 6, he had 45 Disposals, 18 Clearances (4th highest all time), 10 Inside 50s and 9 Tackles. Along with this, he kicked a Goal, had 14 Score Involvements, 3 Goal Assists and 618 Metres Gained, all with little support from his team in a loss.

Not many cases, telling me the requirements are probably a little too strict. If we brought disposals numbers into the discussion, requiring anything over 30 Disposals plus 10 in other categories, we get 132 cases. The standout players being:

• Tom Rockliff with 9 times
• Dayne Zorko and Patrick Dangerfield with 5 times each
• Nathan Buckley with 4 times
• Chris Judd, Gary Ablett, Leigh Montagna, Sam Mitchell, Scott Pendelbury, Scott Thompson, Shane Tuck and Tom Liberatore with 3 times each
• 20 more players on 2 times each. Current players are Adam Treloar, Callan Ward, Clayton Oliver, Dan Hannebery, Dustin Martin, Jack Steven, Jaeger O'Meara, Josh Kelly, Luke Shuey and Patrick Cripps.

Obviously the 2020 season makes it harder than ever to generate a "Triple Double" given the shorter quarters, but the closest efforts so far are probably Rory Laird in 2020 Round 11 - 5 Marks, 9 Tackles, 6 Inside 50s, 10 Clearances from 37 disposals, as well as Marcus Bontempelli in Round 12 - 6 marks, 9 tackles, 6 inside 50s and 12 clearances from 33 Disposals. Bont also managed, in Round 17, an impressive 8 marks, 6 tackles, 8 inside 50s and 11 clearances from 28 disposals.

That one is based on kicks, handballs, marks and tackles. I'm not sure exactly how many have managed it, but there's not many. I think Dunkley is our best bet currently. Daniel Cross used to be decent at them as a good marking inside mid.
