Perez jumped by Russell in the drivers standings as well.
Down to 8th, well below the proposed benchmark that he had been set.

146 behinds Max (target was 100 points)
7 positions behind Max (target was 5)

Should put DR in the RB im sure he would do a better job than checo. But they probably wont.

Wow don't know how Lewis got the vote for driver of the day

It's a popular vote, which opens at the start of the race. Most of the votes were cast when it was looking like a Hamilton win, with Oscar likely to catch and pass Russell.

Russell deserved to win with the benefit of hindsight, but that only became clear in the last 2-3 laps, by which time most of the votes had already been cast.

This race was really one that got away from Piastri. There were so many "what if" scenarios which could have seen him emerge as the winner, but didn't. Most are team mistakes, but not all.
  • What if they setup the car for wet qualifying, instead of dry? Surely this cost Oscar track position from the start of the race.
  • What if they didn't completely **** up the tyre strategy in Q3? Again, costing him multiple spots on the grid.
  • What if they tell him to start chasing LeClerc earlier, not waiting for the 3rd set of tyres? If he start the pursuit earlier, then maybe he catches him with more time to spare for the Mercedes pursuit.
  • What if Oscar doesn't overshoot the pit box, costing himself an extra 2 seconds in the pit stop?
  • What if he gets past LeClerc on the 1st attempt, giving himself an extra lap for the Mercedes pursuit?
So near, yet so far.

It’s no excuse but surely running a double stint and not being able to pick up marbles after the race would easily make up the 1.5kgs
Yeah this is the big issue I think.

Had George done a cool down lap, he could've picked up the marbles. Was talking to my boss who's worked in motorsport his whole life, he said you'd be surprised how much the marbles weigh. Needed 400g per tyre essentially.

That will make Hamilton less salty. Shame that he got gifted another win.
Gifted another win? He started 3rd and dominated all day in a car that no one gave him a genuine chance in.

It sucks what happened to George but Lewis drove a brilliant race.

Thoughts on Checo's race?

He started on the front row and finished 8th (7th after the Russell DQ), 43 seconds behind the winner. On the face of it, that's not good. However...

It appears that the Red Bull was a great car in the wet, or at least the semi-wet conditions they had for qualifying. The car wasn't anywhere near as dominant in the dry race conditions. Even Max could only work his way up to 5th (4th after the DQ), 9 seconds behind the winner. With McLaren, Mercedes & Ferrari all having both drivers finish (OK, Russell was DQ'ed), this really is as good as it gets for him, given the relative talent levels of the respective drivers.

Is it enough to save him? Almost certainly not. Is it the best he could have done? Pretty much, yes.

Gifted in the sense that George deserved to win, but was robbed by a late change in team strategy (one stop - so unexpected wear on his hard tyres) and a quirk of the track (no parade lap for picking up marbles after the chequered flag).

Lewis deserves full credit for driving his car to 2nd place, and being first in line when Russell was DQ'ed. But at the end of the day, he wasn't the first car across the line, so yes, it was gifted to him.
