The worst team to win a premiership

Just seeing what do u think is the worst team in a year that has gone through and won the premiership in that year

Don't know if they were the worst team to win it but Essendon in 1993 weren't my ideal model of a premiership team. A lot of things went their way in the finals along with a great comeback performance against Adelaide. I wish we had made the GF that year. Spanked both teams during that year and Essendon had no answer for Carey. However, we were stuffed after the West Coast loss and had our chances to finish on top at seasons end and earn a better run but blew it with stupid losses to Fitzroy and the Bulldogs.

And any GF team that has the likes of Mark Athorn in it are bound to be beaten. Not saying they didn't deserve it but given the years that followed it was pretty obvious that the Gods were shining on Essendon that year.

I racked my brains over this as I think any team in the top half dozen can usually beat anyother team, given a level playing field. But I remember feeling dismayed at the Swans 2005.
I oddly felt cheated. But kudos to the Swannies for a fantastic effort.

In recent times, North Melbourne in 1999 comes to mind. Although the Roos finished second on the ladder that year, many of their wins during the year were unconvincing; achieved in close but low standard games against poor opposition. In the finals they defeated 7th placed Port, a Brisbane team decimated by injuries in the preliminary and 6th placed Carlton in the grand final, also in unconvincing style.

I don't begrudge the Roos their flag success in 1999; that year just had a hollow feel to it, much like last year's Australian Open Women's tennis final, where the title was decided by a forfeit in the quarter finals and the retirement of an unwell player in the final.

Might be a good idea to read the topic again.

Pies in '90. Went to that game. Absolutely appalling.

The fact is we won. Essendon were appalling.

An All-Australian midfield brigade lead by Tony Shaw. Peter Daicos was our best midfielder that year and he didn't have to play in the midfield. Shane Morwood and Michael Christian were absolutely terrific in the back line.

We were a bloody good side. Matthews got the best from his group.

The topic is bull******** !!!
How could you possibly say that? The premiership side is the best side throughout the year, simple as that.

Actually it's the best side in the finals. That's what makes our game more interesting as opposed to, let's say, the English Premier League...

What about Millane!!

As a magpie hating blues supporter, I admired Millane. A true hard and great champion. They don't make them like Millane anymore.

Yeah, of course. The club struggled to fill the void after Pants died, to this day I think it cost us another premiership, in the 90s. Pants was supremely skilled, he played tough but fair, and also had football smarts and was a born leader. Pants would have made a great coach had he lived, that fills me with grief.

But I was referring to Tony Shaw, who lead the midfield and won the Norm Smith Medal, he was amazing throughout the year.

ha Swans supporters must have seen the title of this thread and ran coz none of them have posted here.

The Worst in my memory has to Be Sydney 2005, another dis-honourable mention, Adelaide 1998.

And most of all Essendon 2000, nah just jokes.

sydney 2005. i may sound biased due to us losing the match and although they have a few talented players the way they play just isnt appealing to me. no offence to swan supporters just the gameplay roos uses even though it does get you places is ruining the freeflowing 1 on 1 footy. the worse thing is a lot of other teams are following lead.

Narr you don't sound biased. You just sound like a tug merchant repeating the same old cliches. By the way if the worst team ever to win a GF gets within a point of your team of egocentrics, drunks and bet wetters, playing the same brand of football with virtually the same side, the following season, does that make the weavils the second worst side to win a premiership. (Thinking music please)

No question the worst team to win it all was Sydney last year. Had the Eagles actually done anything that day we wouldn't have had to go through a scikening year of Gerard Healy in the afterglow of a Sydney win.

You think that was bad? How about all the bandwagoners on Morning Television and Channel 10 Commentary glouting about how good its for the game? Good for the game turning into Soccer? Yeh that surely makes AFL a unique sport ay?

Same here, Millane shined on that day (watched the GF on tape a few years back was in absolute awe with Millane). Shame Millane drove recklessly and over the limit one year and one day after that great triumph for the Colli boys (well they hadnt won a flag in over 33 years about time they broke it.)

??? Millane didn't do much on GF day, his presence alone would have been inspiring tho

Adelaide had the worst h&a season records of late

dont know where the pies 90 stuff comes from, entering the finals it was clear that either the pies or dons would win.......must be those hawks supporters who cant get over the fact that the hawks were ordinary in 90!

sydney 05 were just an ordinary side who got lucky
SF - geelong tried to not lose the game instead of winning it, and it blew up in their face.....geelong still do that and still lose!!
PF - faced a st.kilda team who were out on their feet
GF - should have been without Hall

very lucky

And carringbush was desperately unlucky once again.

Really unlucky to have:

A big unfit useless forward with no jam tart;
a drunken lout with no jam tart;
a shiela smacker with no jam tart;
a has been who disappeared up his own orifice years ago;
a shambolic organization run by a big mouthed corporate boner;
a talentless midfield slower than the collingwood cheer squad; and
a lumbering backline looser than paris hilton's undies.

Without all that bad luck champ you would have given it a shake

lmao I love this site with it's sense of humour:thumbsu:

Port Adelaide 2004 would give a good show. That team was ordinary. How did Pickett win the Norm Smith. Only reason he won it was cos no one else did anything of note

Read reply to MUG87 and put the thinking cap on. He's stumped
