Any trade Hawthorn did last year?

Tom Mitchell had a fantastic season and looks like he'll lead Hawthorn's engine room for the next 8 years. IF (huge if) O'meara can regain decent level of fitness, he'll be worth easily what they paid for him.

The Hawks potentially rebuilt 1/3 of an elite midfield in one off season. Not bad.

Their pick swap with the saints sucked big round hairy things, though...

Impey for 33 is definitely in this conversation.

What were the Hawks thinking.

I think the Hawks are pretty confident of finding a player late in the draft. 4 out of the last 5 years they have found someone late.

It seems to be their go-to strategy.

Trade in players who can fill holes right now, make sure the trades get done, stay competitive and back the recruiters to find a few diamonds in the rough.

I think they overpay sometimes but I appreciate that they are attempting different tactics to the rest of the league.

Jarman could never play a game for Hawthorn and it would still not even register in the top 50 'worst trades ever'.

From the mouth of one of our recruiters, you are spot on, Hawthorn believe there are a few gems hidden throughout this draft, just like in 2013 when Sicily, Hunt and Fantasia were taken in the 50's.

Yep. St Kilda did nothing yet got far better compensation than Gold Coast - who ended up getting less than our original offer.

Nice trade Suns !

Better than Doedee at 16 when you could have had Burton.

Who are we missing out on this year with our pick 33?

Also can anyone tell me what Hawthorn have traded for Hale, Gibson and Burgoyne?

Certainly not THE worst trade ever (even as a collective), but am i right to say they've traded 6 pretty good picks for:
  • an average ruckman that was considered the #2 ruckman at Nth Ballarat last year in the vfl,
  • an ok mid sized defender and
  • a silky midfielder with a recent history (at time of trade) of injury, who's coming to the end of his career.
6 potentially decent youngsters would be preferable to what they'll get out of those 3....

.

Wow. Made in 2011, but still ... Wow.

Surely this thread ends with the gold standard Steven O'Reilly to Carlton response?
Been done to death this thread. Always ends in the same grudge match ....Steven O'Reilly v John Pitura.
Potentially OReilly by a whisker, maybe... but both were truly sensational list destroying moments in footy history.

A washed up 31yo Wayne Carey for pick 2 and 18 has got to be up there
North wound up picking Daniel Wells and Kris Shore (who?) with picks 2 and 18 respectively.

Wells left North last year and in return using their compensation pick they got Josh Williams.

Even today the fruits of Carey's indiscretions continue to benefit North. And for how much longer?

I think the Ian Stewart-Bill Barrott swap deserves a run every now and then.
Certainly does. But that was like in todays terms swapping Dangerfield for JPK. i.e. swapping 2 of the top 5 centremen. Stewart had already won 2 Brownlows and became injury prone and apparently had a barny with his coach Allan Jeans. Both were not happy and Barrott was well known as a bit of a nutcase. The big thing was the timing meant Saints wouldnt have a xfer fee. Stewart won another Brownlow in his first yr at Tiges but was finished just a cpl of yrs later. Barrott was just an utter disaster...phukked in the head but a brilliant clearance player when he felt like it.
Got an older cousin (intolerable at the moment after the flag :D) who still pretends to shudder at the name Pitura that happened just a few yrs later. Reckons it totally nobbled the Tiges list for maybe 5 yrs just when they'd won 2 flags in a row. The late Brian Roberts unfortunately has missed this flag but Francis Jackson you;d know from your recruiting dept must be in raptures celebrating these days. Graham Teasdale (Brownlow a few yrs later) and Jackson were a cpl of youngsters who werent getting games at Tiges, but went on to become stars at South, and The Whale damn near won a Brownlow as soon as he arrived at South. For What ?...all they got was a temperamental primadonna who did sweet FA. I wouldnt go bringing up the name Pitura with the older guys at the club :p.
But yeah, the Stewart/Barrott swap ranks high. More of a hindsight thing though... probably solid reasons for it happening at the time. Looking back with hindsight it looks ridiculous.
Tumultuous and memorable decade for the Tiges, but from all reports, on paper, and the reaction of a cpl of old tiges fans i know, the Pitura trade was just a bad dream they wish to forget.

Freo’s early stuff was pretty horrid. Delaney and Ridley for Lloyd and Lucas was a corker.
Of recent years the Carlton and GWS deal looks a tad ordinary, Jacksch and Boekhorst for pick 7 effectively.
