Depends who GC draft with those picks this year. Even if GC had kept them they weren’t picking Ryan. If GC use those picks right in a strong draft they can come out even at worst. That is potentially a win-win trade

If we finish 1st, that would be a pick 20ish. Superdraft or not (and an afl.com.au article suggested it was not), that is not a good outcome if we finish high up the table.

They could bundle that pick and their second for a High first. Wouldn’t be a bad outcome. The second first round pick gives them options.

Is it really a first rounder if it's pick 20? Big difference between that and their true first rounder which is looking to be around 5 or 6 this year.

We won’t know the end result till 3+ years down the track. Way too early to blow the trumpet. GC could draft the next Fyfe at pick 20..

Or they could draft the next Tony Notte at pick 20.

You want the higher draft picks because there's more guarantee of success, at the risk of stating the bleeding obvious. They made the trade because they thought they would improve this year and we'd slide a lot.

Heard this so many times it’s not funny- early draft picks don’t guarantee drafting a gun. Any trade especially one with futures you won’t know the end result till a few years. All I’m saying is it is way too early to tell that’s all.

There is no guarantee, sure, but it improves your chances of drafting a gun. That's why clubs negotiate to trade for picks higher up the order.

Pick 50 was last year. They only get one pick for the upcoming draft
What we know:

Gold Coast
Pick 52 - Brayden Crossley (3 games)

West Coast
Pick 21 - Oscar Allen (0 games)
Pick 26 - Liam Ryan (3 games)
Pick 38 - Jack Petrucelle (2 games)

What we don't know:

Gold Coast
West Coast's 2018 1st rounder (Pick 18 at this stage)

West Coast
Gold Coast's 2018 2nd rounder (Pick 22 at this stage)

Draft picks are what you make of them. I know the Suns are very excited about the future of Crossley, likewise West Coast with a player like Liam Ryan. But don't fall into the assumption that the Suns would have Liam Ryan on their list if they had kept their picks. Gold Coast know that drafting a player like Liam Ryan would probably result in homesickness a few years down the track and that's not an ideal scenario for them after their recent retention struggles. The Suns have been down that road before with players like Harley Bennell and Jarrod Garlett and learnt their lesson.

You really can't judge the true winner of a trade until years down the track.

True, but you can judge the front runner at this point in time.

Do you think Gold Coast would do the trade knowing the situation? No way.

Of course not but it's easy to say that retrospectively. At the time, West Coast had only just scraped into the finals and most thought they were heading south on the ladder. It seemed like a calculated risk to secure a top 10 pick in a year which is expected to produce a strong (top end) draft talent. It's also important to note the Suns never intended to keep West Coast's 2018 first round pick. Their intention was to trade that pick to Fremantle for Lachie Weller. Had that occurred, the Suns would be laughing right now with Weller, Pick 2 from 2017, Crossley and not having to worry West Coast's win-loss record this year.

They weren't able to pull off the desired trade with Fremantle and had to compromise. This is the end result.

Worst trade of 2017 is easily #12 for Charlie Cameron. Wtf are the Lions thinking?!?!

Yeah, this call doesn't look so good in hindsight. Genuine crowd draw, prolific goal kicker and now a premiership player. Well played Lions.

Happy to admit I also thought it was wild at the time but gees Cameron has been good up north

Even if it’s pick 1 (it won’t) they got Richmond’s second next year back
Could turnnout o.k. If North finish 12th with their midfield (disregard academy and father sons because they can't access them anyway) it might be 6 for Whitlock and 19 and a years development.

It all comes down to how good Whitlock turns out to be.

Pretty much, and development is the key. I'd be fine doing it as he's the type North needed

It’s likely Pick 2 or 3 they’ve handed over for 27 and a future 2nd.

So Pick 2 or 3 for 27 and 20+*

It’s a horrible trade for North.

* due to more bids and academy kids in next year’s draft.

Are we all just ignoring Essendon giving up pick 9 this year?
Surely you trade it up a spot or two to grab a top 10 talent and Kako
