Watching soccer live beats the hell out of watching a 3:00am CL match on a Wednesday morning. Ok I love watching both, but there is no substitute for being part of the crowd.

The drunken match day experience is fine but that's about 14 home games not all 135 games.

Champions League and Premier League highlights on YouTube > watching the A-League on live TV

What shits me is Socceroos qualifying fixtures come out and months later the FFA still hasn't announced where the home games will be (except the first). Good job selling tickets and getting free internet talk.

Was NSL on tv? thinking SBS or was that the early A-League? Skills were atrocious

Oh yeah teh nsl was on SBS. Early a-league was on optus? or something like that.

skills were atrocious compared to the top leagues around the world. For sure.

On a separate if not altogether dissimilar note, AFLW, if someone mentions that their skills are poor its generally met with a shrug of the shoulders. In contrast a-league skills being poor is met with derision. Is that because AFLW is the pinnacle of its kind?

Do football fans (soccer) really hate that our national side are called the 'socceroos'?
Nah, no one really cares. Its just a nickname. I think it riles the anti-football brigade more for some unknown reason.

i dont understand when people get so outraged by a nickname, or a name for that matter. Its odd

If someone says AFLW skills are poor, the male who said it is hung by his balls and women are allowed to whip him.

I always thought Europe soccer fans hated the word soccer and thus a lot of Australia's soccer supporters are from their European heritage and would also hate it.

Similarly, people get anxious when soccer is called football. But don't batter an eyelid when someone says they play AFL. What they don't grasp is that if player X plays AFL, it means they play seniors. But if that player is dropped to the reserves, they aren't playing AFL. They CANNOT say "I play AFL", they are actually playing VFL,SANFL, WAFL, NEAFL etc.

Extend that, if someone plays for say Vermont FC, they arent playing AFL, they are playing EFL.

Local soccer has its merits. Greek bloke at work was a diehard South Melbourne supporter, he took me to a few games and it was quite a buzz jumping up and down yelling, "Hellas! Hellas!" and guys setting off flares then diving into the crowd to avoid security.

My son played for another club, best bits were the ethnics getting stuck into each other (Serbs vs Croats, Poles vs everyone, etc). Also you get to hear swearing in other languages which is great education. Was at a northern suburbs venue and our coach got sent from the ground for swearing at the utterly incompetent ref. His abuse was mild compared to that being dished out by the Vietnamese bench who were happily screaming racist epithets that the ref couldn't understand, but I could. So I joined in, the look on the Viet's faces was priceless.
