The London coverage was brilliant, I watched heaps of sailing and other stuff I'd never normally see. Then for Rio we had channel 7 showing the same replay of a meaningless basketball game from four days earlier on 2 of the 3 channels at the same time.

the foxtel coverage was excellent, watched alot more sports than i normally do, Rio was back to average because of channel 7, only watched it because it was on at work, repeating the same events and showing a shitload of swimming

I reckon interest in the Olympics has waned in general because we aren't very good any more. 16-25-27 gold-silver-bronze in Sydney, then comparable results in Athens and Beijing. In Rio we won 8-11-10, half the total medal haul from Sydney.

Team GB (I still don't get why they are called that, it's team UK) on the other hand won 1 gold medal and 15 medals total in Atlanta, then went 11-10-7 in Sydney and 9-9-12 in Athens. They passed us in Beijing and by London and Rio were miles ahead. They went 27-23-17 in Rio, finishing 2nd in gold medals and 3rd in total medals. We just scraped into the top 10. Would not be surprised to see us slip out of the top 10 in Tokyo. We won 1 gold medal in swimming in London and 3 in Rio compared to 5 in Sydney and 7 in Beijing. Our swimmers like our male tennis players seem to be as unlikable as they are disappointing when it counts. When team 'straya is getting comprehensively pantsed by the poms 'sports mad' Aussies are going to lose interest.

The UK massively boosted their sports funding since Sydney. They spend around 90 million pounds a year (which they get from the national lottery) specifically targeting Olympic sports for medals. They don't even bother funding sports they don't think will win a medal.

Golf debuted at Rio and it was just rubbish.

Many of the top players wern't there ( not enough money on offer) and it was played at one of the most nondiscript looking coarses I've ever seen.

You could've debuted golf at Atlanta 96 and played it Augusta National and the top players wouldn't have given a shit. It doesn't belong in the Olympics.

I don't know anything about ice hockey, but if you take all the Canada/US and the few hundred European NHL players out of the mix then I can't imagine the Olympic tournament being that interesting.

It will be closer, but yeah, nowhere near the best in the world playing. Canada's team is made up of juniors and retired NHLers.

I'd have to czech on that but it would be a lot easier without the kremlim de la creme playing against them. Really is a crimea that NHL players can't play.
