ok this is actually becoming a joke, all the talk of needing another tall back and how we should be trading the kitchen sink to get one is completely fanciful.

jamison, thornton, waite, bower & austin.

how many more tall backs do we need? Surely between those 5 blokes we could cover the tallest forward line. in fact come to think of it there aren't too many teams that play the old "5 key position players inside the forward 50" anymore.
Actually come to think of it the tallest (decent) forward lines are probably st.kilda & geelong.
Stkilda have nick, kosi, resting ruckman, then mid sized forwards.
Geelong have mooney, hawkins, ottens, then miz size forwards also.

thus, 5 key backs for carlton - 3 or 4 key forwards for the opposition = 1 or 2 extra backs for carlton

we have enough of them!

Brian Lake would be a great pick up for every team but we would have to trade some high quality to get him. Not to mention he is leaving the doggies not because of a lack of foreseeable success, rather he's leaving for the almighty $$. what message is that going to send to our kids who in 5 years time will already have become elite and want to be payed what they are worth. If we begin to encourage that culture now we will have sweet F A chance of keeping murphy, Gibbs, Kruze, etc. under the cap.

Josh Gibson at the moment is no better than than jamison, thornton, waite or bower. Austin & Anderson will go passed him by the end of next season, they have so much more upside.

To those who say "well we got found out against brisbane". Get your hand off it!
Waite did not play.
Jamison did not play.
Austin did not play (although he probably hasn't developed enough yet to take on brown).
Thornton played.
Bower tore his medial ligament but kept playinig. (THATS HOW DEPLETED WE WERE)
We simply had too many injuries and with the amount & quality of ball that went inside 50 in the last 15 minutes not many defences would have been able to stop brisbane.

Now i do not normally post and am more the observant type but FFS we have a more than competent defence that is DEVELOPING together. Give it time.

Not to mention you are selling our players short. believe it or not, our blokes actually aren't that bad. i know this might go against popular opinion on this website but the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

ok so hopefully now we all know we dont need another backman, perhaps some could concentrate on drafting a young key forward to replace fev, because believe it or not in 4 years time fev will be on the wrong side of 30 (similar age to matt lloyd is now i believe). caleb tyler is a young key forward but we cant put all our eggs into the one basket. perhaps if we can see past the bright lights of picking up a b-grade player who will compliment the bullants midfield nicely (sorry johno), we could see CARLTON actually USE their OWN draft pick to recruit another tall key position player and DEVELOP him OURSELVES.

i understand that many carlton posters are unaware of it, but it is perfectly legal to keep and use your very own draft picks.

Yeah good points!!! One thing to remember though is that Lake hasn't re signed with the Bulldogs as yet due to money issue's and contract length so whoever they trade Lake for IF it's a quality player they will still have to come up with some decent coin, unless they go for picks.

Injuries clearly depleted our back half and with Waite and Jamison returning next year, our defence does not seem a major concern, however our forward half is different, we need a addition to our forward line next year which will reduce our dependence on Fev and we also need to draft a young tall forward to develop over the next two years e.g Griffiths, Panos etc.

what we desperately need is a key forward and an inside midfielder, now that juddy is gone for the first 3 weeks we desp need to bring in another quality midfielder, pref inside one, who could take a tag and release murph and gibbs, who have some work to do if they r to handle tags

Not a bad OP and I am one of the ones that is against picking up Lake (due to the price tag) but tell me which two would be able to do a lockdown job on Roughead/Franklin and Brown/Bradshaw? It is true that we have a number if key backs but none of them are who you would want to play on the big gorrillas of the AFL. Sure we can get by without one but we would be better with another key back and then have the ability to move Waite forward.

It is a very good op

Just wondering whether the author will fade away again, only to come back when this forum needs another stimulus injection of raw sensibility.

The author could very well become a near mythical figure, like Kwai Chang Caine from the TV show "Kung Fu."

Thank you HCTT, I have been trying to get this through to every one in some of my threads but havent been quite to the point you are. I think we are fine for Key position players.

I think Waite must play forward. I still think we might need a backup tall for either end if we have the same bad luck next year. Not sure Cloke and Setanta are good enough back ups just yet...

i can't agree with this, our defense is a disgrace. as much as paul bower has improved it's embarrassing that we are relying on him to take the likes of John Brown.

sorry.

Well without Jamo and Waite we are seemingly stretched in defence and then our whole structure goes to shit. We need another big bodied defender which would allow Bower and Thornton to be more creative off half back, a role to which they are more suited.

Austin may well be the answer to CHB but not just yet.
It is a bit of a catch 22 there isn't it as he needs games yet not there yet, although who knows after the pre-season with a bit extra bulk.
He certainly has the speed and agility.

I certainly agree about Austin there is definately something there that I really like. He has good skills, is courageous, mobile and definately has the body to be developed into a strong CHB.

He definately needs another few preseasons to get that strength required to play that position but I wouldn't be against sticking him at CHB and play Waite as a forward or even a sweeper off half back to assist Austin and the other defenders.

yeah i know that jamo and waite will be back in but we can't guarantee that waite will always be playing defense he's shown a lot up forward this year. who knows, next year is a different year and austin and bower will improve.

we'll eventually get there

Waite will play in defence when he is needed, horses for courses type thing. Jamo automatically takes the FF (generally) which releases our other defenders to the 2nd and 3rd forwards, another tall down back would be great but IMO it's not worth it unless a deal clearly in our favour is offered.

Shittest post I've read in a while. What makes you call our defense a disgrace?

Bower and Jamison are two talented young KPD that would be one of the first backmen picked at any other club.

Waite is a star rebounding tall who was close to AA form prior to his injury.

Austin has shown all the signs of having what it takes to make it as a CHB: tall, strong, fast, aggressive, courageous and a strong mark. Will be a player.

Thornton is one of the best third talls in the game. Reads the play brilliantly and always goes when it's his turn.

Armfield and Joseph are developing beautifully as rugged run-with types, who can break a line.

Setanta would have played back against Brisbane had it not been for his injuries, and is more than capable at filling a hole.

So yeah I agree, our defence is a disgrace.:thumbsu:

it is. (army, joseph, thornton and jamo aside)

setanta isn't much up back, he's been slow in defense and has been much more valuable inside 50 for us this year before injury. bower has too much on his shoulders without jamo and it really showed at the end of the year. disgrace probably wasn't the right word but don't talk it up. it has potential that thats all.

Here's a nice little stat.

Rd 10 this year (Waite went down round 9)

Least points scored against
1. St Kilda 576
2. Geelong 768
3. Carlton 878

Waite was a MASSIVE injury. Add to that Jamison who only played 13 games as well and we had our 3rd and 4th defenders Thornton and Bower playing on the best 2 forwards and considering this I think those 2 did a fairly resonable job this season. This problem was highlighted the greatest against Brisbane last week.

There is no problem whatsoever with our backline without injuries.

They are all young and developing except for Waite - who is one of the best CHB/ utility players going around, and Thornton who is actually a very good 3rd tall loose man in defence sort of role.

Oh and next year I see us using Waite as a true utility. When we play against Brisbane, St. Kilda, Hawthorn Waite will be best used as a CHB against Brown, Riewoldt and Franklin but apart from that I can see him being used as a mixture of wing and 3rd forward.

Those 3 players are really the only I would think it is neccessary to use Waite against because he is really the only player we have to stay with a true CHF.

Jamison will take the FF. Leaving Bower and Thornton to take mediums/ 3rd tall forward. Then we have Armfield, Joseph and Russell to play small/medium.

Barring injury of course.
