One thing that has been over looked this season is where exactly it rates compared to other seasons. No doubt lost amongst the wooden spoon finish.

lets check out our worst season finishes where we finished bottom 5.

15 team competition

11th
1994: 9-12-1 Cornes sacked *injury plagues season

16 team competition

12th
1996: 8-14 Shaw sacked *injury plagued season
2004: 8-14 Ayres sacked *injury plagued season

13th
1999: 8-14 Blight resigned *injury plagued season

14th
2011: 7-15 Craig sacked *injury plagued season

18 team competition

14th
2022: 8-14 Nicks rebuild

15th
2021: 7-15 Nicks rebuild
2024: 8-13-1 Nicks rebuild

18th
2020: 3-14 Nicks rebuild *injury plagued season

So Nicks has been at the helm for 4 of our 9 worst seasons on record and he is treated with kid gloves. every other coach has been sacked or resigned, including a 2 time premiership coach.

Of all our bad seasons, poor coaching was attributed but we also had some ripping injuries to key players during those years combined with many other contributing factors. But the coach was held always responsible.

Nicks had injuries and had the mandate to turn over the playing list granted and he was afforded all patience as a result. But after a 2023 season where he showed we had the list to be competitive, 2024 means he has no excuses. Yet we are expected to pass finishing 15th with nothing more than a few basic injuries. Its always someone elses fault.

This is by far the worst season on AFC record where there is no excuses to not be competitive and at lease make a run to finals.

Wooden spoon season in 2020 is factually the worse we’ve been. Hard to beat 14 losses in a row

But this season, considering context, is close

In terms of excuses, this is worse. He played a lot of young kids in 2020. On record 2020 is our worst but I think hands down this is our worst season where there just isnt the excuses to back Nicks.

3 worst seasons in our history:

2020 - 14 losses in a row. First wooden Spoon. Disaster.
2010 - Looked so good at the end of 2009. Looked like we had a group of stars to take over - Knights, Douglas, Mackay, Tippett, Walker, Danger. Then we went 1-7 in the first 8 rounds.
2024 - No explanation necessary. Season expectation by the club was finals. Finished 15th.

Short memories.

This is just one poor year in many poor years, but 2020 and even 2021 was some of the worst football I've seen us play as a club.

This year we've at least played some good footy at times. Unfortunately we've just got a shit coach and still some poor decision makers in our staff/board.

Nah 1996 was our worst year, absolute talent laden list with a 6-2 start.
Beat Fitzroy and Brisbane at home for the rest of the year.

2011 was the year after we lost Goodwin, Edwards, McLeod and Burton. Thats our 2nd worst.

This is about the same as 1995 or 2000.

No expectations that year.

Plus COVID was a bigger issue.

And we played kids after culling older players.

There was hope.

What do us supporters have to look forward to now?

They might sack Nicks if we struggle again next year? Great another wasted year.

Then a new coach to fix all the issues.

Without being hyperbolic, we could go ten years without playing Finals.... already seven.

We have had statistically worse years, but there was always hope of a better year after that year.

Right now, is anyone expecting 2025 to be better???

I found it hard to take 2020 seriously. Wasnt a real season at all imo.

Remember walking through town to the oval, on a Tuesday night or something weird, to see us play as the away team with a 10k cap on the crowd or whatever it was.

Just bizarre. This season is worse.

I can't see us improving much on our 15th place this season in the coming year with Nicks at the helm. We have regressed. We will be a 10-15th place again next season.

And the f’ing morons wouldn’t have even thought about looking around to see what options there are for a head coach.

Actually, if the Keane thing is true, it could be the catalyst that drives the club into action to find a new coach. Player feed back on player welfare and mismanagement would almost certainly be a huge factor.

It has undoubtedly been one of our worst.
I came into the season with a realistic view. I knew that improvement out of a rebuild is never linear. I didn't expect to just continue onwards to a finals berth.
Even with that expectation, this year has been so poor and so disappointing, it has to be considered one of our worst.

We have seen the failure of our coach laid bare.
We have had our entire coaching group exposed.
We have seen that our culture is one of senior entitlement.
We have had our inability to properly understand and develop young talent completely displayed for all to see.
We have seen the holes in our list laid open.
We have seen the dramatic cliff our senior players have hit and flown straight off of.
It has been made clear that our club leadership continues to be a joke and has no interest in improving.

There is so much that this year has exposed.

2020 was worse for obvious reasons.

But also its continued erasure propagates the "NICKS HAS IMPROVED EVERY YEAR!!!!!!" myth
just waiting for the "this is an anomaly" narrative to begin..

This club has been well and truly ****ed since the debacle of the 2017 GF loss.

The lack of accountability and responsibility by management for the subsequent Camp and the resultant compete gutting of any shred of culture in the playing group and we watched the following wasted 2 years under the arrogant Pyke and his cronies thinking they could just keep doing the same stuff as they did in 2017 despite having on field results fall off a cliff. How ignorant and arrogant this club had become for the 2 years after 2017.

Then they finally decide to axe Pyke in 2020 and bite the bullet and enter the rebuild under Nicks in a covid year which they had to do anyways as players had already left in droves and no-one wanted to come to a toxic club culture.

The actions to Josh this week by Club management and Nicks and the clubs leaders have well and truly reinforced the complete soulless corporation the AFC has now become. To make the decision to drop this raw undeveloped kid for his Showdown actions purely for politically correctness is appalling. He had already taken a beating for most of the year from the media and had got no support from the Club at all. To not play him in a a dead rubber in an equally wasted season is woeful ffs. Particularly after he made the AFLPA Under 22 side in the same week he has been dropped. Its the last straw for this gutless arrogant club and I hope he leaves and takes most of his young mates with him.

Who the hell would want to come to this cultureless club? Good luck with future recruiting and retention.

The off field leadership is none existent and they only care about TV ratings and money and prime time fixtures. Never mind results! They are secondary.

The AFC Corporation Board is full of politicians and business leaders and non-footy people (bye bye Roo we cant get rid of you quick enough - your finger prints are on nearly every disaster this club has recently had). Stuff the fans and members you simply don't matter to the corporate machine.

Players are constantly treated like dirt and are thrown under buses by player leaders (yes Laird I'm looking at you!). Look at the different player that Stengle has become in Geelong (and yes he still has his issues but at least that club has a culture that embraces not destroys its players simply because it is politically correct to do so).

Nicks always plays his favourites (hello Murphy and Himmelberg) while continually crucifying kids during a rebuild. Where is the man management and people development skills of this robot we have as a Head Coach?

Please explain to anyone here why Tex has not yet been resigned for next year when every other club has treated their veterans and ex-captains and on-field leaders like gold? If only for the PR value of the signing it should happen. But no not according to the machine which must always be right. If he wants 2 years as is rumoured then bloody well give it to him. Contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on nowadays anyway.

This year was always going to happen given the ending and the media and club fanfare of last year (waah waah we were robbed went the cry!) They arrogantly turned up in 2024 thinking their shit didn't stink after reading their own press and that all they had to do was turn up to rightfully play finals after being robbed of it last year. Well let me say that 2023 wasn't exactly a stellar H&A year like 2017 certainly was. In 2024 the club merely put band-aids over arterial bleeding wounds and has well and truly got what it deserves in 2024.

Same shit different year should be the motto of the AFC Corporation.

Now over to those perennial underachieving arrogant shits Reid and Ogilvie to **** up the 2024 draft period.

End of rant. Signed Crows Ex-Member.
