Thoughts On The Brisbane Game

Lead for 99 minutes, the majority of the game like last week.

IMO the gameplan in recent weeks has reverted back to last years style ....ultra concervative.

The Lions out tackled us and always came back thru the centre with link handball almost rugby fashion ......as we tackled a Brisbane player picked up and continued to carry the ball.

It was a gameplan that I saw us play in the PS and earlty season .....but even 18 points down with a few minutes to go and .....and yep still kicking backwards.

Doughty a mighty game and he's definately got a contract for next season ....but he is also the biggest culprit in kicking backwards.

Kicking backwards has its strategic value for switching play and buying time .....however it's also a LAZY gameplan for those players not prepared or able to run the lines and take the game on.

There were good signs as well in our player development which I'll mention later in a player review post.

It was just poor foot skills to be honest! and everyone was going crazy in their minds 'should I play on Should I handball should i kick forward or backwards" you could see the players minds running a mile a minute!

Here's some bullet points:

  • Disastrous start to the 4th Quarter.
  • Burton playing out of the goalsquare for a long period - and we keep dropping it on his head, didn't pull down even one.
  • Best: Rutten, Vince, Douglass, Dogga, and I can't find a fifth!!!!
  • Tonight I ate Quiche. I did not drink Chardonnay.
  • Worst: Knights (may have had more possessions for Brisbane than Adelaide), Stevens (great 1st half, shocking kicking), Macca (was he on the field??), Goody (50m kicks to 3 on 1's are not captain kicks).
  • Matthews has a dewlap.
  • I thought Gill tried, yet had the ball kicked poorly to him.
  • Was the great Chicken Man beaten? I call draw.
  • Brown is truly... truly... Rutten's little Bitch.
  • I'm not sure if we fell down in the kicking from half back, or the receiving at half forward. But we lost the game giving it to Vegas, doing that all night long.

Douglas in the best? You are kidding. Apart from kicking 1 goal, he did nothing

The biggest problem tonight was losing the clearances so badly in the 2nd half. Got absolutely smashed and could not win from there. Hopefully Griffin will be fit for the next game because with the inexperienced rucks we have to have the 3 options in Griffin, Maric and Tippett.

How much of that was due to having Maric off the ground as a result of his ankle/knee injury? Thankfully, he did return.

Don't know what the stats were but it feels like we were r*ped at the centre bounces and molested at around the ground stoppages.

No dreaming from this supporter - I am hoping for a top 8 finish - top 4 seems beyond our gameplan.

TAKE THE F.......ers ON FFS when there is little time left and you're 3goals down!!!

Have successfully stuffed up a perfectly winnable game.

Less happy than a port supporter...an' thats sayin' something!!

Good thing about the C-Hole

I dont have to hear a thing about the entire game here.

Bitterly disappointed in the result.

We are just going to make up the numbers in the 8.

Unless of course Trent is the chosen one and makes a massive comeback for our club.

We should have beaten Hawthorn, simple as that! (yes, that loss really stinks)

I don't have much to say. The Lions just outplayed us tonight, they were way too good. Inacurate kicking kept us in the game but they won because they had more of the ball and more scoring shots. We just have to look to the next game, and we can beat Geelong if we get the lucky bounces.

Last 6/7 minutes were a joke, we should've taken more risks and played more direct football, none of this chip around in the backline nonsense. It's better to lose by 5 goals trying to win the game than trying to keep the margin respectable.

Bassett seems to be on the angry pills ever since the Showdown and did some very uncharacteristic things, as if he was playing his last ever game and didn't care whatever the Tribunal hands him.

Anyway I hope Craig makes some changes to the game plan during this week off.

This game also shows how far we have to go, before being really able to mix it with the

comp heavyweights. Can't believe how pissed off I am when, if someone had offered 8-5

up at this point of the season, I would have jumped at it. Expecting too much from a

team with 'P' plates.

I don't want to hear any more cop outs for our team.

Sorry to pick this post as i know i am in the minority here BUT...

We are not losing or inconsistent because of a youngish team.

The intensity and disposal and goalkicking from our senior and 'backbone' players is not up to scratch.

Write out our current side. On paper its very good and certainly could push for top 4 but there are so many who are down on form (and i dont count 25 ineffective disposals with no defensive accountability as form).

Is it a return to the 'crab' gameplan which tries to outsmart the zone on a bloody chess board but which results in pressured defenders making crap decisions with cheap sideways ball, to midfielders constantly being outnumbered when we kick to a contest, to forwards who dont stand a chance in that style. It's utter BS.

We have the cattle to be a very, very good side. I rank our team ON PAPER as equal 4th best in the league and yet we are a rabble.

It was said before the Hawthorn game that rounds 12, 13 and 14 would show where we are at, and I think they have clearly done that. We lost a close game to Hawthorn after leading all night, lost a game to Brisbane which we should have won, and are now facing a Geelong side that has just belted West Coast at Subiaco by 135 points. Basically, we aren't going much further this year.

Tonights game pretty much showed that we are nowhere near a contender, as many would have said previously. I agree with those that say our success has been due to a soft draw...

Again i will stand in the minority...we have the team to be a top 4 side in 2008.

BUT it will take 22 players each week to give 100% intensity at every contest while following a more attacking, direct game plan.

Our tackling, chasing, blocking, gut-running to create numbers at contests is woeful at present and the rot is starting from the top.

If we had senior players and those with hard-earned reputations actually performing, and we still were losing to good sides then i would agree with everyone that we are developing but are nowhere near it.

I simply don't think that's the case. You would be hard pressed in the past month to find a game where over half the players put in a decent 3 to 4 quarter effort up to their usual standards.

They can lift and we should demand they lift, not make excuses for them.

Seriously it sounds like we lost by 113 points instead of 13 and we got so close with a major portion of our side as passengers. 5 players put their hand up tonight and we still were only a couple of kicks away.

Remember and I know some don't like this but this is a new year not a premiership year. I see Brisbane as a very similar side to us only we're better at winning away. They are probably a year or so in front of us in development but we took it up to them.

On tonights game, and whilst he had a great game and Ill take nothing away from him, when Doughty was our best by far we were in trouble.
Both he and Shirley played outstanding football. In close and then there to receive it was awesome. So what happened to the rest?

Lacked intensity, no running the lines, no pressure on the ball carrier and too much chip, chip, chip.
Like last week, when the game was there to be won we want to go backwards. It wont win you games.

Reilly's not fit or needs time in the local league, Andrew has lost confidence in his ability. Andrew of old would have stopped, baulked and run off his tagger instead of trying to kick around him and just kicked into him which lead to another turn over. He also doesn't want to kick for goal. Our captain is feeling the heat with the job and not leading by example. The other one whom has gone missing is vB.just not the same as old.

Whilst others had some clangers and no good game wise, at least they contributed.

And after all that we lost by only 13 points

I said it last week and I concur again this week, how true, how true.

Some great points but is it the fault of a so-called 'development' phase that we cannot help OR is it because all bar 5 were passengers??

So many of those passengers are not in a development phase (maybe a decline one but who knows).

If it were young blokes or blokes who have never proven themselves costing us matches I'd agree it's simply that we are developing but it isn't imo.

Yes there have been times in our history where we didn't have the cattle to be a top 4 side. Until our seasoned players play to their usual standard we cannot say it's the case at present. The fact we are so close even while so many are out of form tells me our capacity is good enough, though present performance isn't. Most disagree and believe our actual capacity isn't up to it.

Right on WW.

It seems for many of our players when its gets tough we revert back to bad old habits. And this occurs depsite the state of the game when a more adventurous course of action is needed to win the game. We had to take some risks to win but we not prepared ot take the pain if it went haywire.

We seem to be running out of steam and energy - so the bye might come at an opportune time.

We seem out of balance to me. Too many slow, tall players in the back half and not enough tall marking targets in the forward half - as well as crumbers to get the ball off a pack.

One of Bassett, Stevens, Rutten and Bock must get out of the back half.

We need ot revet to the system where we run the ball out of the backline and with some pace -too many slow talls do not help.

Put Goody back there to get some confidence. he is playing with blanks at the moment.

We need someone who can take a mark down forward.

Tippett has hit the wall there and needs some time away.

I hope Trent played well today, because he is the obvious one.

Take Macca down there and play him from the pocket.

Without sounding like a troll and after watching you guys play the hawks last week, i can't help feel like your game plan isn't going to take you to a premiership. You have a bloody good team with a lot of class footballers and the reality is if Burton beat Patfull tonight than the crows would have won. It must be frustrating to watch you team just throw the ball laterally around the park. Good luck for the rest of the year. You sure have some future stars in Porplyzia and Vince.
