13 total seasons at the helm

Average 3.25 seasons per Captaincy

4 Captains across 4 leadership ‘eras’ since S26

Next Skipper?
FootyGuy13 once he finally prises the captaincy out of Bob's cold, lifeless hands.

And we save the best until last of course, as we finish off with my beloved Wazzas.

We pick things up at Van Cortlandt Park back in S26 as a squad in flux under club founder Frankston Rover as the majority of the foundation Wazzas playing group by this point have somewhat flamed out. Awkward fitting wunderkind BLERN, having spent his rookie season essentially whoring himself to the highest bidder, had also exited stage left. After the hottest start to a season at Coney Island in their brief history with an undefeated 7-0 start, enthusiasm was on the up under Frankie early on and the earlyish season acquisition of Hall of Famer pantskyle looked set to propel the Wazzas' season into the stratosphere.

However the wheels began to fall off just a game into the pants era at the VCP, as from round 8 onwards they would only manage two sparse wins bookending a 6 game losing streak mid season to scrape into the finals. Frankie himself would follow a similar trajectory as the season wound on, with vice skipper and fellow club legend Wosh stepping in late in the piece to usher the club through a blink and you'll miss it finals campaign after a season that promised much more.

And so Wosh would assume the captaincy in S27 with Frankie by this stage MIA, as she assumed strong ownership of the Wazzas rebuild alongside the experience of her trusted deputy pants, and her S26 replacement wunderkind TheInjuryFactory, having commenced my apprenticeship of sorts.

Under Wosh and co, the Wazzas would make it all the way to an agonising Prelim Final loss against a powerhouse Swamprats side as the skipper also managed to extract every last drop of activity and engagement from a list in need of transition but still capable of delivering. In fact the three leaders themselves enjoyed fantastic individual seasons, as the entire Wazzas engine room were selected in the All-SFA side, with pants also earning deserving vice captaincy nod.

Wosh began her succession planning in the background during the back end of S27, and with pants' blessing, TiF (that's me) was quietly readied to take the reigns ahead of the S28 season. Over the course of the next 5 seasons under TiF, while relative team success was far and few between with only a Prelim Final loss in S31 to show for our graft, we would methodically turn over the list while bringing in some of the competition's biggest names (BEEG, Agent93, natural disaster, The Half Back) and emerging new talents (@kdavva74, Test Tickle, harry000, FootyGuy13, Tonga Bob, DenieD), but activity would ebb and flow between impactful engagement and underachieving on the activity front, with the load often shared most heavily by the leadership group.

Yet the awards poured in. With a beez, a Mobbs, a Fred and no fewer than 15 All-SFA selections for the group... including two VCs and a Captaincy selection amongst that, the Warriors had quietly re-established ourselves as a force. And so while the long awaited flag escaped us, it was time for succession once again as I had sucked Tonga Bob in to taking the captaincy off my hands under the proviso he would Mark Taylor/Don Bradman it, which he tells me is of course still the plan.

So with a platform set and an eager new voice at the helm, the Warriors went from strength to strength off field under the effervescent leadership of Tonga Bob, as he continued the task of turning over the remaining inactivity on the list and chasing big Qooty names to ply their trade at Coney Island. Over the past 6 seasons to date, we've seen the likes of multiple beez winners (Barrybran, Elton Johns Wig, The Filth Wizard) as well as continuing to recruit top end emerging talent like CursingFijian & spudmaster to name a few. Over the past 10 seasons the Wazzas have well and truly entrenched themselves amongst the upper echelon of clubs off field. And the awards have kept coming, with the skipper taking out multiple beez himself, and we've added another beez and a couple of Mobbs Medals to the collection. Yet Qooty as we know is a cruel mistress, with only two more Prelims to show for the Bob era as we continue to exercise incredible staying power at not winning.

Succession wise, Bob himself appears to have a ready made replacement waiting in the wings in his faithful deputy FootyGuy13, who is clearly too patient for his own good!

Ok, so abit of analysis now that we're done with the club by club stuff.

It's probably no surprise to see the longest serving skippers above have also arguably been the strongest, most capable and most likely to contribute strongly behind the scenes. Every skipper on that list was a result of a purposeful and planned succession from their predecessors, and were ultimately set up for success and have gone on to lead their clubs admirably over long tenures.

Non co-captaincy clubs have clearly enjoyed greater longevity from their captaincy tenures as evidenced above, however the Dragons are probably the outlier here with their rapid fire turnover of leaders in recent seasons on par with some of the co-captaincy clubs.

Have added the Old Boys to highlight they are tracking ahead of the co-captaincy curve based on Turbo's initial tenure.

The modern era has been punctuated by a swathe of co-captaincies across almost half of all clubs in the Sweet FA. Swamprats appear to be the outlier here, with philreich often shouldering the load solo in between co-captaincy stints. While the Furies and Royals have managed to burn through at least one of their captains per season on average across their last four captaincy eras.

On average, co-captaincy clubs have managed a full 3 seasons less across their last four captaincy 'eras' (8.3 seasons v 11.3 for solo captaincy clubs), despite taking a look at more alternatives via exposing more candidates to the roles.

Of all players to Co-Captain their clubs during the 'modern era', damicky has relied upon the most dance partners during his tenures with no fewer than 4 co-captains across his captaincy at two clubs, closely followed by BLUEALLTHRU with 3 during his time leading Baghdad and philreich with 3 over his long tenure (however phil captained more seasons without than with a co-captain).
