Matthew Allen still hasn't got a run at senior level. Would probably go to Geelong and be the next Kelly, Stewart etc.

What position is he playing in the WAFL and how is he faring? Part of what i dont like about these threads is you get endless debates between rival supporters as WCE ones suggest say Nelson bc they dont want to offer stars (and i get that) and the other side's supporters think hes a spud etc. Now i think he's probably not a spud but a GOP who wont amount to a lot but either way it doesnt really matter. What does is he's a medium defender and we have heaps of those so he's not going to tell his manager to get him to Geelong as he wont think he'll get opportunities there. To make that scenario work you need to find a player who will be likely to get more opportunities at Geelong than WCE. Thats why Brander's name keeps coming up as he could reasonably get more chances at CHF for Geelong with Hawkins 31 and Sav unproven and rucking a fair bit than at WCE behind Darling Allen Waterman etc. Its the sort of player who might move for opportunities if WCE said 'yep we're ok with that'.

FWIW i think Geelong needs another mid if TK goes (a ball winner would be nice but we really need a winger with legspeed and good disposal by foot) another good key forward and a better ruck than Stanley. What we don't need are medium defenders, probably not key defenders and not small forwards, we have lots of all of those.

Allen looks proficient in his highlights rather than dynamic..which say second tier to me. Mark kick goal. Sometimes guys like that can turn it into a career.. Dickson at the Dogs is basically a very good kick at goal and just a good average player at everything else. I see on your website that Allen is being tried in the middle ..as a 193 mid.. that to me is trying to find a role for him. Perhaps it works. It worked at Geelong for the likes of Ling.. Does he have that type of gut running and toughness?

Im sure WC would be willing to look at 21 year old player that has failed to break into a good side.. but OOC at years end ..he may not even be on your list next year.

HBF is not an area of need and I feel one of the easiest areas to fill..we seem to do it more often than not with players that were less than R1 picks.. so value picks.
Our needs.. Potentially great young mids and talls .. HBF would just be surplus. Im not convinced on Brander..he did nothing to excite me when wc played in Geelong but he would have a better fit chance at Geelong than HBF thats struggling for a game. 2e is probably the player closest to being done.. and I doubt he sees himself as out the door soon.

Matt Allen consistently puts up good numbers but never gets a crack, which makes me wonder if club insiders know something we don’t. Maybe he has a deficiency that means he’s not likely to be up to AFL level. Don’t think he would add any value in a trade.

Nelson, at least, has played AFL and is workmanlike. But he’d be steak knives.

Who would you rather trade instead? (Genuinely interested).
Probably no one you will want, this is the dilemma. Even guys we value like Venables wouldn't have anywhere near as much value for Geelong and that is understandable, he just looks like an injury prone early draft pick at this stage as an outsider. The other Victorians we have are role players, Duggan, Cole, Nelson and such like. Not massive currency, although Duggan is a potential future leader.

I'm keen on keeping Brander because I can see a big hole appearing in our side in 18 months. I liked the selections of Brander and Allen at the time because they covered our future and I'm not sure how many expected Kelly to be as good as he is at AFL level. Brander would have played more AFL by now in a lot of other sides. The AFL games he has played have been in depleted or poor sides.

If he is traded as part of a Kelly deal I will probably end up accepting it, but I'm hoping from our side that there is another way. Getting Brander would be a mini win for Geelong that is for sure.

Don't you forget the mighty Brett Spinks or did we get him from Freo?

Ironically David Haynes was the best performed of them.
I was only a little fella in the 90's, though I have done 10 seconds of research and learned that Spinks was a leader goal kicker one year at Geelong?

Bailey Williams is one who fits the Cats 'needs'. Just so happens the Eagles ruck depth is shallow and Bailey looks like a solid second ruck / forward option as of next year.

O'Neil fits the pacey mid / winger profile but is untested and so all potential.

Venables is another but out for the year with concussion basically makes him unreadable on value.

With 35, they were dark days at Geelong. Never played again after that season - which FYI he started with 17 in his first four games, then 18 in his next 14 games then over and out of the AFL.

got a feeling that Geelong are in a heavy training load to prepare for finals.

In general, why is it always this, or "he's carrying something", etc? Why can't it ever be "the bloke just isn't quite as good as hyped or advertised", or "he is still prone to down periods/inconsistency"?

Kelly not playing well when Geelong don't play well is a knock on him. Doesn't make him a front runner, just means he's not the sort of player who is yet capable of dragging his team over the line. He's only played about 40 games.

Kelly is good but his value is a bit unknown really , has had a great form range last season and this but still unknown value and very risky for us West Coast at the value the media go on about .
