Geelong knows that if he goes to West Coast, they are highly touted to win the flag next year.. making the first round pick up at 19 after the Gold Coast double dip and then compensation for free agents.. could even be over pick 20. Going for next years picks I'm pretty sure would be sweeteners more than anything.

I agree it has to be something under pick 10 + another pick in the teens. I don't know why West Coast fans can't seem to agree.

I agree with that. Look i think its a couple of things one is the extra 12months development in a R1 now compared to next year helps Geelong where they are at. Also pick 17ish next year is ok theres usually say 20decent players in most drafts (not all) but the issue is normally say if you need a kpf and theres 4 good ones you bet that at 17 you still might get one of them, bc a lot of the early picks are academy next year if 3 of those kpfs are academy you are still going to get a good player at 17 but not the type you need. This is why a pick in a more open draft this year is better.

Look i suspect despite all the vitriol amongst supporters Geelong and WCE are on the same page..Geelong probably said we want more but one top 10 + 14 and we will deal..i expect WCE probably have said ok..its now up to finding a third club willing to swap that pick. The issue is those sort of deals are complicated and often take til the last day..if it gets to that stage does kelly stay strong and trust wce and geelong to get it through or after last year does he panic and go back to freo who at that stage will no doubt still have a big contract + a top 10 pick on the table? It will be interesting to see.

Its probably slightly more than wce want to give up but in reality prob 14 +16ish + 24 which i think is fair. Comparable to the Beams neale and shiel trades for kelly, i think hes worth more than them but hes also ooc so its ok.

It staggers how many people get uppity that some combination of WC picks is outrageous unders but the same picks going via a third party are OK.

And slowly eagles fans are waking up. Remember when 5 days ago nearly all eagles fans werre convinced you would have to get back a second rounder to give up 14 and your 2020 first.
I can see why you wouldn't want to give us next year's second. That could be close to pick 20, with Kelly gone, your best 5 players nearly 200 years old between them, and Chris Scott wanting to play Blicavs in all 18 positions as the season progresses.

Doubt it. Gaff can basically go home whenever he likes due to his contract, and theres been not so much as a murmur that he wants to leave Perth from any of the local rags.

Very publicly nailed his flag to the West Coast mast at the end of 2018. He is a happy boy out West.

Gaff can't join Geelong, he would have to be traded to another club for a top 10 pick. His family are in Melbourne which is 6 hours from Geelong by roller blades.

People scoff at suggestions of two firsts or a first and two seconds and come up with trades like that and think they are realistic.
It really is the silly season. Gaff is a number four draft pick, club champion, AA, fourth in the Brownlow (this is highly relevant, it seems), with nine years of proven performance. And if we want to hand him over for Kelly, a number 24 pick with two years proven performance, we apparently have to chuck in another first?

Kelly is not worth two firsts if one of those is inside the top 10, that makes him more valuable than some of the biggest names in the league. He is worth two firsts if they are both in the teens.

Watching pay-TV about 30 min ago???

Ok, well unless you provide a little more information, I think your comment should be disregarded.

Gaff has not shown any indication of wanting to leave. He is Victorian, but he's from Kew, not Geelong so there is no go home factor there.

I don't think the trade proposition you put forward is something that the eagles would consider.

I agree..i dont see why he wouldnt have gone last year if he wanted to and then change his mind 12 months later.

Bare with me... work in progress.

Carlton:

IN: Jack Martin, Tom Papley
OUT: pick 9, 2020 Rd 2 pick

WC:

IN: Tim Kelly, pick 37
OUT: 14, 24, 2020 Rd 1 pick

Gold Coast:

IN: pick 17
OUT: Jack Martin

Sydney:

IN: Joe Daniher, pick 24, Carlton 2020 Rd 2 pick
OUT: pick 5, Tom Papley

Geel:

IN: pick 5, pick 9
OUT: Tim Kelly, pick 17

Essendon:

IN: pick 14, WC 2020 Rd 1 pick
OUT: Joe Daniher

Very similar to my monster trade I came up with the other day. I'd be absolutely on board for that trade, for us. Pick 5 and 9 would mean Flanders/Kemp and Jackson. Dream scenario. Dodo on the other hand...

Bit different for Gold Coast because they have the double whammy of sucking and being a fledgling club. GWS at least have going for them that they have been consistently competitive for the last 5 years. Meanwhile Gold Coast have won 4.6 games per year on average in that time.

The problem with a draft where (mostly) 18 year olds are picked is that they take time to develop. If every time you draft a kid you lose them two years later you are never going to improve. But you can't force any player to stay beyond two years if they don't want to be there. Brisbane went through this 5-6 years ago when Yeo, Docherty, Karnezis etc. all left and now they are much stronger on and off field than they were and have since attracted Neale and others to go there.
That's why I said, Eagles and Geelong are giving the chance to draft Kelly through GCS bad trading, yet Eagles take the risk to draft Oscar Allen ahead of Kelly knowingly Geelong got GCS pick they get from ablett trade.Don't blame GCS both club utilise GCS second Rd pick, just that Geelong use that pick on Tim Kelly, these got nothing to do with how GCS develop kids.

Some utter tripe by The Roar which is opinion based user stuff which says he might be good at Carlton and we can’t fit Kelly and Gaff in our salary cap

Also known as the daily let’s give Gaff up post 🥴

Oh, I saw that.

This whole idea that we need to ship a key player out is silly.

There is zero sense in getting rid of Gaff to make room for Kelly. The whole benefit in trying to get Kelly is to strengthen our midfield. A swap + 14 doesn't do that. It is simply not good list management.

Just public perception I guess. It's a bit rough though given draftees get no say on where they go, and if they turn around 2 years later and ask to go home they get flamed for it.

A bit of responsibility should lie with the team who picked the player in the first place. Probably just unlucky for geelong (and obviously kelly) that a a couple of his kids get diagnosed with autism shortly after being recruited.

You give it a crack, but if it fails you should just move on.

Guys like Jack Lukosius are going to face the same blowtorch in 12 months. But it's really on GCS if they recruited someone then couldnt retain them.

I wonder if GC's King will go through all this when he nominates St Kilda next year instead of asking to be sent to any Victorian club.

Surely "I want to play with my brother" would be considered too weak to specifically get to one of ten clubs.

To be fair ive never got uppity about it so dont lump me in with the rest just because of what club i support (ive tried to do the same with you in return). Its a combination of a number of things..higher picks giving more options to Geelong at the draft..desire to have this years picks over next year...list spots etc..i would expect Geelong and WCE as good clubs are not far apart on what they see his value at..but its down to whether they can find a 3rd club willing to help seal the trade because a 2 club trade will be hard to make the value work on.

Yes, and our list management guys need to get creative in order to satisfy the Saints requirements re Jack Steven. Wells saying your current picks aren't enough means you need to get to work to secure better picks. I think your club is well run for the most part and they will find a way to do this.

To get Brad Ottens we had to trade Moloney to get another first round pick in order to satisfy Richmond. We didn't sit there idly saying we don't have the currency. We made it happen.
OK. I'm sure we can find plenty of bargaining chips of the quality of Brent Moloney and pick 36. How about Tim Kelly for Mark Hutchings and pick 33? That's two slight upgrades.

I reckon Gaff will go home, but he wants to win a flag and he knows we have a window of one to two more years. If we snag a flag or not, he’ll probably go home end of 2020 of 21.

By that time he will owe West Coast for developing him from the 18 year old skinny boy from Victoria into a multiple AA midfielder when Gold Coast didn't want him, and we also stuck by him after he decided to win his middleweight championship belt against Andrew Brayshaw at Optus Stadium in 2018.

Therefore, nothing less than two top 10 picks will do.

If St Kilda randomly secedes from the rest of Victoria and the Saints somehow find themselves in contention, all hell will break loose. Ben King will be forbidden from going there and he will have to make a choice between either Fitzroy or University.

Otherwise, no one will bat an eye lid
