We give up a contracted, happy AA midfielder for an uncontracted, unhappy AA midfielder and we’re required to throw in our first rounder as well?

Our list management team wouldn’t be allowed back into the state.

d,

or e with 36 coming back.

Cats get their 3 picks inside 30, and "more than 2 first rounders"

I'd suggest both teams already know the rough deal and its just arguing over the minor picks.

I think the deal is done and the Cats need to posture and act tough to appease their fans and look like they tried really, really hard.

Is there an unwritten rule that years served means you get to name your destination and the departing club has to help them there?

Only thing that makes Ablett and Dangerfield different to TK

Just public perception I guess. It's a bit rough though given draftees get no say on where they go, and if they turn around 2 years later and ask to go home they get flamed for it.

A bit of responsibility should lie with the team who picked the player in the first place. Probably just unlucky for geelong (and obviously kelly) that a a couple of his kids get diagnosed with autism shortly after being recruited.

You give it a crack, but if it fails you should just move on.

Guys like Jack Lukosius are going to face the same blowtorch in 12 months. But it's really on GCS if they recruited someone then couldnt retain them.

Bare with me... work in progress.

Carlton:

IN: Jack Martin, Tom Papley
OUT: pick 9, 2020 Rd 2 pick

WC:

IN: Tim Kelly, pick 37
OUT: 14, 24, 2020 Rd 1 pick

Gold Coast:

IN: pick 17
OUT: Jack Martin

Sydney:

IN: Joe Daniher, pick 24, Carlton 2020 Rd 2 pick
OUT: pick 5, Tom Papley

Geel:

IN: pick 5, pick 9
OUT: Tim Kelly, pick 17

Essendon:

IN: pick 14, WC 2020 Rd 1 pick
OUT: Joe Daniher

Looks good except Essendon probably getting the shaft there.
Doubt they'd accept that for Daniher unless their 'hardball' is all smoke and mirrors. 11 games in 2 years is pretty damning.

Also the whole lot could be condensed to just a deal between Eagles/Cats. ie

Eagles IN: Kelly and Cats 36.
Eagles OUT: 14,24, future 1st.

Cats ontrade our 14,24,future 1st with their pick 17 and grab whatever picks they want (ie 5+9 in your proposed scenario).

Bit different for Gold Coast because they have the double whammy of sucking and being a fledgling club. GWS at least have going for them that they have been consistently competitive for the last 5 years. Meanwhile Gold Coast have won 4.6 games per year on average in that time.

The problem with a draft where (mostly) 18 year olds are picked is that they take time to develop. If every time you draft a kid you lose them two years later you are never going to improve. But you can't force any player to stay beyond two years if they don't want to be there. Brisbane went through this 5-6 years ago when Yeo, Docherty, Karnezis etc. all left and now they are much stronger on and off field than they were and have since attracted Neale and others to go there.

The more teams you include the more moving parts there are and the greater the chance that someone 'loses' the deal.

IMO 'multi club' trades that are really just Geelong on-trading WC picks are a bit of a waste of time. If 14 and 24 can be turned into 9 then great, but it's still 14 and 24 going out.

You can tweak it so Geelong get 5, 14, 25 and Essendon get 9 & our 2020 1st, then Essendon's 31 goes to Sydney and we don't get 37... every piece you move around someone wins or loses a bit more.

The longer the trade takes to go through ,then Geelong's power game becomes prevalent. Their weekness is that T. Kelly is out of contract, but delaying a deal could leverage Fremantle into the spiel. Freo's pick's (and assuming Freo get pick 6 from St. Kilda) are influencing factors. They know the draft would put Fremantle in a strong position. WC have just as many options:
1) Go to draft with current picks
2) Deal with St Kilda for pick 6 to acquire a stronger negotiating position.
3) Decide to start a mini rebuild, trade Gaff to St. Kilda and go to draft with multiple picks.
4) Make a deal with Freo.

Not bad.

Really it becomes:

Geelong get 5 and 25
Geelong lose 14, 24 and WC future 1st

Bulldogs get WC future 1st and 24
Bulldogs lose 13

Essendon get 13 and 14
Essendon lose Daniher

Sydney get Daniher
Sydney lose 5 and 25

Any obvious winners and losers in that?

Its probably slightly more than wce want to give up but in reality prob 14 +16ish + 24 which i think is fair. Comparable to the Beams neale and shiel trades for kelly, i think hes worth more than them but hes also ooc so its ok.
Sydney are probably paying slightly over for Daniher but i doubt it gets done for less.
Im not sure if the bulldogs want to do it but 24 gets bruce or keath and i suppose they have an academy player next year.
Its fair for daniher given injuries but i doubt dodo will see it that way.

Fixed. No less fair than your proposal, and at least mine adds up.

I just don't understand why the Eagles would want to give up 2 first's and an early second. I think their position is stronger. 2 firsts is sufficient for Geelong to trade up after that just swap or give up late seconds.

More and more coming out about Gaff and 14 now for TK.

Doubt it. Gaff can basically go home whenever he likes due to his contract, and theres been not so much as a murmur that he wants to leave Perth from any of the local rags.

Very publicly nailed his flag to the West Coast mast at the end of 2018. He is a happy boy out West.
