Clurey wasn't even depth any more. He was just surplus to requirements. For most games next season Ratugolea will be the depth key defender in the sanfl. And we can develop Walsh and hopefully Moss in key defence posts. Plus we are keeping Kyle Marshall on at the Magpies to see if we can still do something with him.

You can't complain about not developing key defenders then complain about not keeping Clurey who even he knew they'd put a line through.

Aliir

Bergman (much more effective as a third tall than Clurey, his athleticism makes up for the cm difference)
Ratugolea
Walsh
Clurey
Moss (still learning but needs to be developed)

Clurey surplus to requirements not depth. They weren't going to play him again. He was barely a tall defender in the true sense in the sanfl, played off his man all the time and wing.

Time to move on and develop some young defenders which we apparently don't do. Maybe because people want to keep players like Clurey.

I don't want to keep Clurey, I just figure if we're paying him anyway we may as well have him playing for the SANFL side.

Yeah it's weird - I guess they wanted to clear space for the draft and figured they could carry one paid out contract.

Not the one (almost) everyone hoped for, granted ;) but they had put a line through Tom as he acknowledged.

After the back injury they just seemed to forget him.

Remember when everyone was saying that Sam Hayes should be pushing for a spot on the Seniors because he was the AR McLean Medalist...

I'd much prefer Clurey as a top up than bloody Marshall. He's dross. If we wanted to keep a tall either keep Clurey or Scully as top ups. But nope, we went for the dross.
Scully was a forward, chalk and cheese. Marshall is everything Clurey isn’t, Young and Tall enough to play on the Gorillas. End of the day, Marshall is what the Magpies are now, feeders for the Ones and if Marshall can add some weight and strength this could be a master stroke.

When I've watched him week after week after week, sorry, I don't see anything in him. He's not AFL quality.

At 19, a baby giraffe, I don’t disagree. However he was the best of the junior ranks when he made the State team. Big blokes take longer to develop and his development was hindered with injuries.

There is every chance he and Tom Clurey play the same amount of AFL in the next 2-3 years and it will be pointless. I do like the gumption of the lad to return after being ‘delisted’ this is what makes ‘Clubs’ and I hope he isn’t the last.

Agree to some extent, especially your last sentence.
Could have easily slid back to Panther Park and got way more $'s than a Port top up player.
And not been in a wooden spoon side too!
Backed himself to improve.
Still young.
If he gets over his injuries, he could blossom with age and experience.
Or he may well just drift off into country footy.
It's up to him. No big risk for the club.
