Tom, mate, you're lucky to have been paid by the club for the last two years.

I cannot wait for the day where one of our players retires and thanks the club and says, I probably could've held on for a few more years but I've won a couple of flags and the young guys coming through need to play for the good of the team.

BOO! I think Tom was hard done by in the last few years. He put the effort in - B&F Maggies. It's a mystery that he couldn't get one game in two years.

I don’t think clurey was ever going to be the answer.

I think he had a good period for us 2017-2020 but feels like a really long time ago since he played decent AFL for us.

We’ve probably got some extra versatility with Luko who can play back too if desperate, I’ve always thought finlayson could be an option too down back, Xavier Walsh another. Bergman and Burton can play tall if they had too.

Depth is depth. Clurey as depth is better than selecting Xavier Walsh.

Ultimately his long contract was a mistake, he should've been delisted at least a year ago, but given our current list position, it would have made sense to hold him to see out his contract.

Ultimately I understand the delisting though, because we have a lot of players to filter out in the next couple years, and don't want to hit next year's draft with too many slots to fill.

It's a worry though for our performance this yeah so hopefully Aliir and BZT stay healthy

Tom was part of the best defence we've had in the Hinkley era in 2020.

He didn't get replaced by a young guy coming through (we don't have any young KPDs), he got replaced by 2nd tier mature age types who we paid a kings ransom for who aren't definitively better than Clurey's best footy.

Are we 100% sure Clurey couldn't have played better footy than say, Ratugolea this year? I'm not anti Ratugolea as a KPD, I think he's solid depth, but we already had Clurey on the list and didn't need to spend half a first rounder on him.

I don't know if people remember but in the last off season, a season in which he played one game, we actually traded to get two of his position remembering that he couldn't make the team and was considered backup even then.

He was depth at best and the contract was poor work by the club.

The only thing Clurey could be upset about was that he wasn't gifted games like Jonas was.

The idea that in the twilight of his career he was going to make it on the wing after playing KPD is fools gold.

And we've been trying to get off his contract for a while but we couldn't even wangle a 4th rounder out of a club.

Agreed re Jonas PB, his continued selection when he was beyond cooked and at least 2 years past his use by date was ridiculous.

It was just more signs of the weak entity the club had become under the current regime, as regardless of what role a player had back when we were a real footy club they would have got a tap on the shoulder when their time was up!

No, we would have had winners able to see he wasn’t fit to retain the skipper tag and made things far easier, earlier.

But yes, I agree!

You can also take a look at the corpse of Charlie Dixon holding on for dear life to stay relevant in the side but over at Geelong Tom Hawkins gets the tap on the shoulder from Round 15 onward.

Hawkins is a Hall of Famer while Chuck is Chuckee.

Didn't Hawkins have a season ending foot injury?

He tried to come back but was always a long shot. That why he made the call early to retire.

He is also 2 and a bit years older than Dixon.

Not sure how it was similar, besides the fact that they both ultimately hung up the boots at the same time.

...
Correct.

"Hawkins has not played since round 15 due to a foot injury and confirmed on Tuesday that his 18-season career will come to an end when the Cats' 2024 campaign concludes."
