I know that there was one particular media commentator who suggested he will get $1mill per annum going forward which most people would dismiss out of hand.

However, let's just play the game a little more with that "guesstimate".

If for example ............. say Essendon came along and offered him $1mill to jump ship, then the trade price has to be commensurate with the salary.

You don't plonk $1mill on the salary table to the player and then in the next breath say he's ony worth a late-second rounder in the trade (even though we all know that Dodo would expect that to be the deal).

He's going to have to has an incredible year to get anywhere near that. Not sure which media personality suggested that but it seems ludicrous to me.

He’s going to have to be playing first team football and impacting games to get anywhere near that price. As he’s a pseudo tall he’ll have a long enough career. Look at Hickey for us though he’s been good for us. Weirdly can see us having a go at TDK would be a very Sydney type of thing and we have picks to satisfy a trade.

He's down the highway at season's end.
Know the family, they're all relocating work, house is on the market, most of the other siblings (bar Zoe) live down the coast.
He'll accept a modest contract to replace Stanley with the big buy-in being the lifestyle.

And a brand new pub and house and land deal.

Will the AFL help the Cats the again so they can fit him in their cap like they did with Bowes

If that happened I would offer a 1st round pick i think he's about to break out

Is Geelong really that good of a place to live?
Literally the only place I’ve heard this is the football community.

My family left Geelong for Queensland when I was a younger kid.

It baffles me to hear Geelong in some world is the lifestyle capital of Australia.

If geelong are eyeing him off I bet it is with KPD intentions. We don’t need a ruck as we have Conway. He would be a backup at best.

Yes we do need a ruck as conway wont necessarily be ready for 2024 with injury etc and we are in the window. You would plan to have tdk as the main ruck in 2024 and then move him to more of a 2nd ruck/fwd role once conway is ready (hawkins stanley ceglar etc will all be gone by then and blitz will be nearing the end).

We will have a stack of retirements like hawkins smith tuohy rohan ceglar plus probably menegola and maybe stanley our cap space will open up substantially like it did when danger came in-we wont need afl help to fit anyone in the cap.

I agree that TDK is being overrated currently due to the media love in and partly on the success of his brother, however ... to call TDK "speculative" and then say that he would only be a ruck back up to Toby Conway (0 games - which is the definition of speculative) is also silly talk.

It is silly and most sensible geelong people wont say that. He would clearly be our lead ruck in 2024 (assuming no stanley and ceglar). That said carlton supporters valuing him at 2 first rounders territory are being silly-thats reserved for the 3 or 4 elite rucks in the comp and he isnt that-hes a decent mid tier ruck (much like stanley). Hes worth a late first round/early 2nd rnd pick and some minor change (a later pick or fringe player). 2 first rounders is crazy stuff.

not many of them actually live in the township of Geelong.
Torquay is 25 minutes away, it actually takes longer to get from Safety Beach to Portsea (40 minutes) which is crazy considering both are on the Mornington Peninsula.

TDK is a developing high quality ruck, with forward potential. He has done the spectacular on occasion as a forward (particularly in twos), he has struggled mentally forward, often missing what he should kick, despite overall, having very good disposal for a big bloke.

Has the odd shortcoming, but they can totally be attributed to immaturity. The bloke retains the potential to be a “top 5” ruck. My preference remains to keep him a Blue. We have made a huge investment him. He showed great signs last season, but was clearly cooked by season’s end having to carry the ruck as a still young ruck, off next to no pre season.

I readily accept he is more potential than performance as yet, but expect that to be altered by season’s end. If he has the trajectory I expect and wishes to join the family unit down the coast, he will be worth more than a late teens pick. PROVIDING his year goes as expected, he will be worth an 8-12 range pick. Pick 17-19 range doesn’t cut it, that would need to be accompanied by a decent second rounder (future?), or an acceptable role playing player (hard to think who would be suitable and expendable to the Cats)

He is not is the same discussion as Jackson for multiple first rounders etc, but is not in the take it or leave it bracket either.
I remain somewhat buoyed by the fact that we did not invest in a young ruck last draft. Internal discussions may have Tom committed, but both parties waiting for list priorities to take shape and to assess form through the year. We may be discussing “nothing”. Only a fool would however, ignore the family movements, his brother’s team, his surfing obsession, and the seemingly endless bounty in the hands of Geelong attracting players which seems to suggest a bottomless “cap”.

Those are all reasonable points. What i would say is this mid first rounder stuff depends on him having a very good year and increasing his trade value (which he may well do). But on performance up until now he doesnt hold a value that high-if he was traded tomorrow i stand by my comment that a late 1st or equivalent value would do it.
Bearing in mind with the latter that geelong has good depth in many positions (not ruck) so a depth player or two being involved in a trade would do it.
I dont necessarily disagree with a ballpark of a first and a sweetener if we really want him (i personally dont but i can see why the club will and i accept that) but two R1s is out of the question so we agree there.

Geelong's first round pick is about right/fair to me on current exposed form (if perhaps overs)

Any Carlton fan demanding more is having a laugh (although I do understand if some later round pick swaps are involved)

All supporters over rate their players.
This is one example.

The bloke isn’t even first ruck for the Blues.
He will go to the Cats for their second rounder, which will be fair.

Geelong will be hoping they can build some size onto his frame as well as improve his tenacity.

Agree one thing I'll say though he has this year to improve how much he's worth but yeah a pick around lets say 25-35 is about right at this moment.

Yup, when Pittonet is in front of you, you’d have to say the interest in him is in what he could be, not what he currently is.

He’d have to improve dramatically to command a first rounder this year.

Agree a mid to late second is sort of par for the course for talls. Didn't you give us pick 30 odd for Nankervis? That's sort of the going rate. If he improved so much to be a 1st rounder you'd move a LOT to keep him

Probably rank TDK a little higher than Nank back at that time but if he can achieve what Toby has I think the Cats would be pretty happy.

FWIW we gave you pick 46 for Nank.

There we go thought it was a second, was a third. Back when we loved to be bent over in trades, nowadays we just bid on players and annoy teams lol

Those players wouldn't be on mega dollars they all took pay cuts to keep the team together

Disagree he is even a ruck let alone will walk in and be ahead of a third year conway who is a genuine ruck. Conway may well be holding his own by that point. Dekoning i think will end up a key defender like his younger brother. Which we need as kolo and henry are not genuine key talls.

Yeah, I think in hindsight we did well there but the reality at the time was that he wasn’t a regular 22 player. What he’s become since then has been a good return for us.

Back to TDK though, I’m not sure what similar trade you could compare him to. The only examples of taller players with potential that come to mind are Witts, Nank, Wright, Pittonet.

All went in the later rounds.

I’m sure there are others though.
