Tom Hawkins best CHF of the last 25 years

This is typical of the parochialism that exists down in sleepy hollow. I remember reading an article in the Geelong Ablettiser in the late nineties proclaiming Leigh Colbert was a better player than James Hird!! Who coincidentally played enough of his early career at CHF to warrant inclusion near the top of this list.

Are you saying James hird belongs somewhere near the top of a 'top 25 CHF' list? Lol

Should read:

1. Wayne Carey
2. Dermott Brereton
3. Stephen Kernahan
4. Johnathon Brown
5. Warren Tredrea
6. Matthew Pavlich
7. Gary Lyon
8. Chris Grant
9. Matthew Richardson
10. Scott Lucas

Edited for accuracy.

On another note - What is the deal with Reiwoldt getting in so many people's top 10 - I know he kicked a bag of 8 against the Saints, but c'mon..

Oooh Wait. Nick Reiwoldt?
Are you guys serious??? He'd be top 10 for loyalty, scandals, and athletic ability possibly but no freaking way top 10 CHF.. Maybe he'd sneak into the top 25..

who cares,he's a dud-check out last years to loss to sydney at skilled, there was a thread saying get rid of hawkins, never wanna see him play for us again..etc.They've probably deleted it and now they can sing his praises and totally forgot what they said about their own player..... how un geelong like....typical.

No, not really.. Carey wouldn't have had a "pagan's paddock" to make him look good in defence, would he?

You think he was only good because of the paddock? The paddock helped but he did plenty one V two and three.
He would have been a great in most positions - CHB included. It would be like saying Gary Ablett jr is only a great ruck rover - if he played on the wing he would not have been any good. Carey played at CHB and also on ball. Not much he could not do and why he is in the top couple of players of all time - if not the greatest.

Well he won a premiership (93), 3 best and fairests(94,95,96) and a Brownlow (96) playing centre half forward in the mid-90s. So yeah I'd say he belongs somewhere near the list, probably somewhere near the top.

Yet he was never named an AA CHF. He was a flanker.

Kernahan should be in the list. Richardson too, though his lack of team success will always see him under rated. Of some of the other mentions I would have Stewie Loewe in before Chris Grant and Scott Lucas. Whilst' I'm not sure Brown is Number two, I would have him in the top five.

There is a significant difference between a CHF and a HFF. Hird only kicked more than 40 goals in a season once in his career.

He doesn't belong anywhere near this list, let alone 'somewhere near the top'.

Here is a better list:

1. Wayne Carey
2. Dermott Brereton
3. Stephen Kernahan
-----------------------------
4. Roger Merrett (how a 300+ game CHF who played the first 10 of the last 25 years not even be considered is beyond me!)
5. Jonathon Brown
6. Scott Lucas
7. Nick Riewoldt
------------------------
8. Matthew Richardson
9. Brendon Gale
10. Barry Stoneham

Are you trying to tell me Lucas was a better player than Riewoldt and Richardson. Essendon supporters are the funniest :D

Richo played as much at FF as he did at CHF. He'd be in the 10 FF's over the last 25 years too.
Nick's biggest problem is that while he marks the ball very well, his goal scoring conversion rate isn't so flash.

Scotty never really had that problem - but, the knock on him could be was as good at CHB as he was at CHF!

Riewoldt was pretty much the best player in the comp in 04 and 09. He has won an MVP, 5 best & fairests in good teams and is a 4 x all australian. His impact on games was immense and he basically carried his team to finals time and time again. Sorry mate, he is about 10x the player Lucas was. It's not even close.

It seems to me in this thread Brown is being over-rated, whilst Rewioldt is being under-rated. Browns very best was better then Rewioldts, whilst Rewioldt has been a lot more consistent over his career.

Brown has only really had three really good seasons, whilst Rewioldt was very good from 2004 to 2010.

The thing to think about is that in the main, CHF's are match-winners and kick the important goals to win games.

Sadly for Nick, he has been often found wanting in this regard.

It's a problem every other CHF doesn't have. They all kick the important goals when it is there turn to step up and are all known as match-winners.

244 games and 209 goals would not put Benny Gale anywhere near this list.

I know this is a personal top 10 so it isn't going to agree with everyones but not having Richo in there is just plain wrong. Pretty sure he would be in the top 10 for marks and top 10 for goals in the last 25 years and also pretty sure that's what CHF should be rated on. Kernahan maybe but was more coming to the end of his career in this period, I think.

Kernahan played all but 1 season of his VFL/AFL career inside the last 25 years
