Surely Carlton will pick up the best available key forward with pick 3 rather then go for another midfielder?
'Another midfielder'? Our midfield was comfortably the weakest line. When Cripps and Ed went down we had nothing coming through. Up front we have some promising talent developing. I'd be very disappointed if we didn't add to our midfield stock with 3. Especially when the top 5 players in the draft all look to be midfielders.

Your midfield isn't the issue though in my opinion. They can match it with the best on it's day. The Blues forward-line is horrendous. That's an area Carlton must fix now. The back-line is building nicely, but the forward-line is a major worry.

We have 2 young key forwards that will be pushing for selection next year. It needs just as much fixing as the midfield does. Our midfield some bigger bodies in there while SPS, Cuningham and Fisher develop

Discussing the need for midfielders of the Rockliff type in the right thread. Don't like It.... Bugger off.
Ok sure. Rockliff won't seriously consider Carlton espcially if Gibbs leaves. He'd want a contender and get paid. Carlton could pay him but not promise finals for a few years.

I'm not sure we can say for sure what tom Rockliff wants.

We can guess. And I would guess that after years of playing in Bris he would want to play finals. But it's all guesswork.

Given the reports last year about what he was looking for while shopping himself around, I'm not sure finals is what he'd be looking for. The dollars he was asking for (at least $800,000) would be pricing himself out of most of the clubs who are playing finals.

I'm fairly certain that it was more the size of the contract he was already on at Brisbane, that scared any & all possible suitors away.

You blokes wanted rid of him, no two ways about it.

You don't know that. We could get Rockliff and Gibbs might stay at Carlton. We have beaten some top 8 sides while being down the bottom over the past couple of years. This year we made some improvements. We COULD make the finals next year. Port have proven that you don't need to beat top 8 teams to make the finals.

Still think with all the talk of other clubs entering the race that we'd be the favourite to get him, with brisbane retaining him being the 2nd most likely outcome.

The Lions were open to trading Rockliff last year at the right price. They were also open to keeping him, if that right price didn't materialise.

We need some small forwards and HFF types. We also need midfielders.

Rockliff can do both of those jobs.

Would you offer Rocky 950k over 3/4 years? It's a lot of money and a big risk, despite the increase in the TPP.

I wouldn't. He's a gun, but he's not in the Buddy, Ablett, Martin, Kelly territory.

For band 1 v's 2 compo is it based on the total contract or just the first year? If it's ther latter a front ended contract at that level from someone like north is a chance.

Couldn't get a club to bite last trade period given what Brisbane was paying him. So I very much doubt he will command anything more tha $550k/$600k pa

So from all reports that seems to be in the vicinity Brisbane have offered him...

Last year you'd have had to give up picks for a contracted player. This year he comes free. Unless you were very confident that he was the difference between a flag or not this season, waiting for him to be uncontracted and RFA is a no-brainier.

Not many teams in contention have a spare 850k+.

It was his behavior and attitude. Which was largely overplayed.

Believe me, your far from favorite in this race.

There are man y clubs Rockliff could play elite footy at but I don't think Geelong is one of them, presuming Ablett, Dangerfield, Selwood and Duncan will all be there, I don't think Rocky would play his usual role.

Carlton should cash in on Gibbs and jump on Rockliff - it's a net loss but they get a first round pick most likely to spend on another young mid or forward.

Reckon he is a huge chance to get to Geelong. Imagine the trio of Rocky, Danger and Selwood

I don't see it. Inside mid is not a big need for us so we wont pay 800k and brisbane will match unless we do. We would also lose any compo pick for motlop.
