Anyone think how bad this situation actually is when you consider these players have just come off the books?

Reid
Varcoe
Sharenberg
Broomhead
Dunn

Not really. Without even taking into consideration the rookie aspect of the contracts in this list, the average wage in that group was probably only about 200k at the absolute most.

Phillips after his 2018 season was worth that salary - he’s now been replaced by Daicos. So now because he’s superfluous to our needs hr is suddenly a burden to our cap.
Langdon was worth every cent of $500k in 2018 - remember Swans wanted him.
Then he aggravated his knee injury in 2019, and all of a sudden he’s over paid.
If he was playing like 2018 no one would be questioning his contract.
Beams isn’t on the list - and I don’t recall outrage when he was recruited at $400k.
Cox - was he expensive after you watched him play in the 2018 PF?
Since then he’s had ankle and eye injuries. He is every bit a $500 player if he continues his late season form that everybody was lauding.

Guy didn’t sign Wells or Mayne.

So really you’ve really not made a case.

Phillips has never been worth 500k or 600k. Only a club from outside would pay him that much to lure him out.

Langdon I agree but we had strength in that area - Shaz, Howe. Could have gone either way. Not the worst decision. Agree with you.

Beams - our due diligence appears very poor. If 400k is the amount then that is not make or break.

Cox - partly agree. If his performance was in a GF then I would 100% agree.

I think the mistake is we pay big dollars, based on a small sample size. I would say Daicos this season has had a better season than anything Phillips has done. However, I wouldn’t be paying Daicos 500k or 600k yet. Need a bigger sample size and prove himself further.

WHE appears to be another poor contract.

There must be other f-uck ups to get us to where are are.

Whether we pay him 800k or 50k (for example, extreme ends of the spectrum) is a massive issue either way I'd say. If the club was hoping to get rid of him cheap and theyve ended up paying him in full or close to it, then thats extra cap stress that the club has to face.

People are dreaming if they think he’s walking away from 2 years contracted salary for $50k. I’d be very surprised if savings are any more than a few hundred thousand maximum. The bigger question was always how much of it will the AFL allow to be paid outside TPP. I’d be hoping for all of it.

The extra cap pressure could also be due to us putting all of Beams settlement in this years cap to get it over and done with. The gift that keeps on giving!

Not losing players isn't exactly the best indicator of cap management though is it? Treloar is what, top 5 player at the club? You really shouldn't be losing that type of quality to a cap squeeze, right?

I don't reckon we'll lose Treloar if we don't want to. I think the club has legitimate concerns about his ability to perform when separated from his family. And see an opportunity to make something of it by obtaining an improved draft hand in a draft we rate. In addition to salary room to attack free agency next year. Making the most of a situation which isn't ideal.

He absolutely was not.

And even if it was doesn’t mean now we aren’t overpaying him.

No SPIN seems to think that because it arguably was a good deal at the time, it’s not overpaying.

Justify it all you want, point is, we have a handful of players being overpaid by the club. The reasons can vary as to why, but the result is salary cap issues.

Would have to rate Motagna as the most irritating pos on radio. I know I can switch channels or whatever, but even 2 seconds of listening before I can change channels is enough. I know anybody can have an opinion, just not him.

I’d guess Dunn the only 1 of those players on something that low. I’d estimate the remainder on at least $300k.

No SPIN, just so everyone is clear, if we aren’t overpaying across the list, why do we have salary cap pressure for a team that hasn’t won anything?

They're all irritating my friend. I wait for Jen or Dave to bring the news. Once it has happened!

Has it occurred to you that without the back ending of AT’s contract and creating cap space we wouldnt have been able to afford Beams.
Unselfish b******.... If he had held out and refused to drop pay we may not have got Beams and we may not gave been so far up the creek. Treloar must be held accountable. Trade him LOL...

Surely the full amount of what we pay him will be inside the TPP. It’s just a question of whether we have to take that up front or can spread it over two seasons.

Makes me laugh seeing the media putting Crouch's name into St Kilda's midfield list as if to say wow, this midfield is gonna be stacked!

Then they list names like Hennebery, Ross and Hill 🤯

Other than Steele they're really not that good.
And they are overpaying 🤣. Lot of that going around!

Hang on, so deals that were good deals at the time, but have since become bad deals, are still good deals because at the time they were signed they were good???

Riiiiight

You do realise this is how it works don’t you? Clubs get sucked into a patch of form, overpay then regret it later. You do that enough and you have a busted cap.

If the club had a crystal ball it never would have signed Beams, re-signed Langdon or Phillips.
But that’s not how life works - nor is it therefore the basis to bag Ned Guy, for events beyond his control.

People are responsible for results, this isn’t kindergarten.
This is a club that turns over 70 odd million.

In most businesses, decisions that turn out to be poor have repercussions. No matter how good a bloke you are.

We threw the kitchen sink at a flag, it took a WA umpire not paying an obvious block to cruel it.

I think most people could take the current mess if we had got the result we wanted, but now it's time to pay the piper and it's a bitter pill without that flag we overspent for.
