With Tonights Reports looks like Stephenson more chance of Leaving then Treloar

My potential reaction to both of them being traded out for cents in the dollar could roughly be expressed as follows...

I'm thinking...
We snag a first rounder for Treloar...
We snag a first rounder for Stephenson....
We offload Cox for a late second rounder...
We offload Phillips for a late second rounder/ third rounder...

That's probably 2 million off next year's payments!

GWS have been stringing along the Cats.
We now have 3 first rounders in this year's draft. We keep one of them. We parcel up two first rounders and our first selection in 2021 for Cameron and GWS's 2021 second rounder... or our 2 first rounders + Cox ( GWS ain't flush with ruck options ).

Maybe we lose Treloar + Stephenson + Cox + Phillips and we get a massive salary dump + Cameron ( on 800-900k? ) + a late second round pick and we keep our first selection ( for McInness, the jet).

Just sayin....

The cap room is rubbish as far as I'm concerned.. journo crap

Didn’t the club concede last year that things very very tight? Having to renegotiate contracts suggests that there is an issue. I suspect it’s a reasonably big issue. I don’t think we need the journos to realise this. Might not be as bad as they are making out, but the issue is far from rubbish IMO

And loyal players who love the club and desperately want to stay also get removed by "strong clubs". One could argue a strong club would quite easily deal with a young kid who has moved away from the club's expectations by surrounding him with wise inspiring mentors and experienced, empathetic coaches.
This has been done on countless occasions in the AFL.
It appears to be too tough a task for our strong club.

I never liked MM as a person for the way he came across as just a grumpy old prick. But to his credit, he seemed to be able to manage the problem children. I would think that he’d get someone like JS on the right path. NB doesn’t seem to have that same vibe.

MM was great to watch in his press conferences or talking down journos. Made you feel proud to have him batting for us. NB is more of a thinker.. both great

I would not envisage we would have to pay any of Stevenson's contract if the report of a 5 year deal at 500k is true. Our current contract is a 3 year deal.

So it means North are offering a brand new contract, and we would be releasing from ours. North are offering 2.5M in value compared to our 1.8. So Stevo suffers no loss as a result.

I just think its a mistake for young players to take long deals. If he has 2 good years he would be worth 800k a year. So the 500 won't look that good anymore.

In any event, to offer a player a 5 year contract means you must give a top 10 pick. Saad is getting 650k and demanded pick 6. He is also much older and is a back pocket. Simply put, pick 11 doesn't cut it.

Id be looking at a future 2nd (good points for Daics) and Polec to be added in....and even that feels low.

You don't offer 21 year old top 10 picks a 5 year deal and not cough up at the trade table.
Jack Martin was offered a 5 year 3 million dollar deal and Carlton wouldn’t give more than a late second and a 3rd round pick.

we know how that worked out..

Really? You dont find it easy to believe with the Beams f up, then Mason on $500k, Stevo on $500k+, Phillips on $500k - $600k, and Treloar on $900k soon....

It actually makes a lot of sense... except from our hair-brain list managers

Agree the AFL won’t come to the table to settle the Beams issue, it would set a dangerous precedent for them. Both sides have said they would come to an arrangement, so you would expect there to be a deal made whereby we either pay him nothing (which would be fair) or a fraction of his wage. Langdon is a different situation he can take an AFL payout because of a career ending injury...this would not be counted in out cap.

Disagree on Cox I think we can wipe the early season form and put it down to his eye issues. He came good towards the end of the season and again in a big game. Sydney were reportedly interested, it’s really a tradeoff in this scenario. We either aim to dump salary and get a poor pick in return or pay part of the wage and get a better pick. Either way I believe we could move him.

Didn’t Beams also suffer a career-ending (mental health) injury?

I would have thought that there would be an AFL income protection insurance policy that he could claim against, once it is clear that his injury is indeed so severe that he is unable to fulfil the terms of his employment contract.

This is how I see it playing out today (pure guess)

Treloar to go for a second rounder. Unfortunately this is a salary dump. We may pay a large large chunk of his wage to get a 1st rounder and save face a bit.

Phillips will go for a second rounder, again could be later as they know we are desperate.

Stevo I believe will stay. If he goes to North he could be in for a long long rebuild infront of 3000 at Etihad. That’s got to be a factor. Then again is he being forced out?

If a trade is found I think it’ll be 11 with pies giving stevo and a 2/3 rounder.

Treloar - bad outcome in terms of the compensation

Phillips - ok

Stevo - bad outcome see Treloar

Atu - bad outcome. What happened in the hub for him not to get another game for the whole season.

Somehow Josh Thomas will be on our list next season.

For a team that was going to be improving their forward line, I’m not really seeing that.

Mate it is pretty clear to me and most people that someone has got to go to alleviate cap space issues. Not to mention JDG isn’t even signed up yet.
Not a chance Treloar would even be up for trade if we were on top of our TPP.
This then means that other clubs KNOW we HAVE to remove them due to their price and they’re the only players that have any currency. People complaining about Cox, Philips, WHE, JT don’t understand that nobody wants them.
The only reason Dogs are even contemplating Treloar is due to getting him cheap and Dunks possibly leaving, not because they truly want him as he doesn’t really fit a list need when you think of it, but if the opportunity arose which it has, why not jump on it to give yourself a better team.
Stepho is in the same boat, he has great currency and teams are happy to trade for him. However due to the ridiculous $$ contracts they’re on, teams don’t want to pay a high price so some of these ridiculous trades I’m seeing on this board are just ludicrous. Two firsts for Treloar on a 900k contract? Try a late first round MAX.
People I think will be severely disappointed if a fire sale happens tomorrow night which I’m fearful of. We will not be getting true value for Ads/Philips or Stepho, that’s for certain.
And if we do keep them, we’ll have to severely reshape contracts and back end lots of players which will put us in harm further down the track again and who will agree to doing it after this whole Treloar fiasco? Nobody. It’s a huge huge mess.

Spot on.

We are desperate sellers of players who are all seen as somewhat flawed. We have no leverage and as a consequence we will either be accepting lousy deals on one or more of Treloar, Stephenson or Phillips (hopefully just the latter), or if they refuse to go and/or nobody wants them, I fear we all need to brace ourselves for a late bombshell announcement that we’re trading out one of our currently uncontracted players - DeGoey (also seen as flawed and won’t attract a full-value offer) or Mihochek (or has he actually re-signed?).

Today’s gonna be ugly. Prepare for the melts!

As an aside, we really have so little of top-tier trade value in our list. Grundy, Moore, Adams, Daicos, Maynard, Quaynor and Crisp are about the only players who would command a really strong deal. We continue to over-rate and over-pay our players. None of them want to leave because they know how good they’ve got it at Collingwood.

Yep, that all sounds about right to me. Pretty terrible but about right.

Worse still will be spin that the club will put on it, with nobody in our footy department admin taking responsibility or suffering any consequences. They’ll attempt to play us all for gullible fools.

We shouldn’t be trading our future first as daicos is meant to be a top 5 pick and our future pick will probably end up being a top 5 pick
Stop being so dramatic.

It's been going on for decades, Collingwood has always over rated our playing group. Dermie always says, the difference between the Hawks and Pies, when the Pies lose everyone is back slapping the players telling them how good they are when the hawks lose everyone is filthy and demanding better. I see this within our footy club, too much back-slapping and overpaid players.

Jack Martin was offered a 5 year 3 million dollar deal and Carlton wouldn’t give more than a late second and a 3rd round pick.

we know how that worked out..
Jack Martin was out of contract. Learn the difference.

That was with the threat of PSD hanging over the negotiations and not being contracted, which is how it played out eventually

A bit like how Crows-GWS will play out with Hately
