Cripps, Bont, Merrett and JKelly are the big free agent names next year.

No big key forwards as free agents.
I think I might start a rumour that offloading Treloar to the Dogs was all about maxing out our salary cap so that they can't afford to match our bid for Bont:think:

If Cox continues his later season form when he was OK, it really isn't that bad on paper. Thomas and WHE need to go though. I think the new kid Mcreery will be a shot for Round 1. With a good preseason, Ruscoe might be too.

At 30 in Rd 1 it’s now or never for him because the club will play Kelly if he shows anything through pre-season.

J Kelly Is the need for me

He's an absolute star. Love him as a player.

There's been some indication we're after more than one free agent next year, but I doubt it's two of these. Probably one and one other, lower profile guy.

If it is two of these (highly unlikely), Cripps & Merrett are probably good as a package because of what they offer collectively and also because Merrett's probably the cheapest of the four.

If it's just one, Bont (best all rounder and offers size and leadership) or Kelly (best skills and best long term Pendles replacement) for me.

Realistically, Cripps (probably going back to Perth if he leaves at all) and Bont (he is the face of the WB, their best player and their captain) are probably the hardest to get.

I would have said Daicos won’t be #1 based on the prestige, the NAB portfolio etc. which is given up if another clubs bids and gets matched. However that happened for JUH so no reason why it couldn’t happen to Nicky D.

JUH was bid on at #1 as he was clearly the best player in the draft pool and Adelaide deserves kudos for doing so.

While the cachet of having a #1 draft pick walk through our doors would be nice, the reality is Nick is coming anyway and I personally suspect there will be some standout KPP's and maybe even a bigger bodied midfielder or two who would all be vying for top 5 draft status, as is the case pretty much every year.

If Nick slipped to say pick 5 then that would be very good for us, as we'd already have the points to match a bid on him and have some points to go towards any bid on Dib (if we nominate him as an NGA selection) that might come later outside of the top 20 picks, although we'd likely still need to acquire another third or fourth round pick to match, depending on where that bid comes.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see how 2021 unfolds in the U18 competitions around the country.

Josh Kelly is a very nice player don't get me wrong, but does he have the ability to put a team on his back and drag them across the line against a quality opponent on a regular basis? I don't think we've ever really seen that from him at GWS for various reasons and to be perfectly frank if we're throwing $800-900k per year at a midfielder then I want a ... dare I say it ... Buckley type who can do that for the team.

In an 18 man team sport, it shouldn’t be a requirement for a single player to be able to drag their entire team across the line on a regular basis. It creates an unhealthy reliance on that player amd kills the team if they get injured. Richmond had that reliance on Delidio for years and once they got rid of him amd spread the load, the rest is history.

I'm not sure how you can ignore the players running around who fit this bill - eg. Macrae / Bont, Dusty, Neale, Fyfe, Dangerfield, with younger players like Petracca, Oliver, Steele and even Rowell looking like they're headed in that direction.

Like I said the fact that Kelly hasn't ever stood out as that "wow, he really turned the game in their favour" type of player on a consistent basis is a concern for mine, as I'd really want someone who can do that out of the midfield if we're paying absolute top dollar for a free agent.

Exactly. Dangerfield is one of those players and couldn't touch it in the GF (how come no-one talks about this?) and Geelong lost comfortably in the end.

Watch the old men at Geelong slide back to the pack this year. Nobody talks about it, but they were the major beneficiaries of the reduced minutes per quarter in 2020 imo. There’s a reason Dangerfield was so loudly backing keeping 16 minute quarters a month or two ago. With 20 minute quarters and a reduced interchange, expect the old boys to run out of steam fairly frequently in 2021.

How Hawkins and Cameron play together is a key imo.

Hadn’t thought about this way, agree.

While not big in terms of Coleman consideration, I thought Taberner, Sam Day and Tim O'Brien were FA's in 2021. As are Riewoldt and Hooker, but they're getting too long in the tooth to be of any interest.

If you could add a Kelly and a Billings or Vlastuin though you'd be pretty happy. I'm not so keen on Merrett.

As long as they can keep their home ground advantage they will be in the finals.

Whilst I tend to agree, the GF isn't a good example, as the other bloke who is viewed in the same light, jagged 4 goals from nothing chances and it could be said he turned the game and dragged his team across the line.

I doubt we’ll have any lucky luring captains away from their clubs...Kelly and Merrett would be great additions to compliment our grunt in Grundy and Adam’s, Sier and potentially Maynard and degoey if we get them through there.

Y'all working this out manually?

Go here:

Currently (based on 2020 ladder) we have 1729 points-wise.

To match Pick 1 after discount = 2400
To match Pick 2 after discount = 2014
To match Pick 3 after discount = 1787
To match Pick 4 after discount = 1627

So we'll be safe and deficit free from Pick 4 onwards, but we could trade forward a future pick from our 2022 picks if we needed to. And we may trade a player next season for a pick worth points also.

Our main concern at this stage is whether keep the rule change where you can bank as many points as you like regardless of list spots, but we will likely be fine.
Let’s hope Nick plays his heart out next year . Then all he has to do is not interview for any clubs . That will ensure he doesn’t go top 3

I'm hoping he does something stupid and gets arrested. Will drop his draft range and show a strong commitment to team culture.
