For me, worst of all was Carlton:
  • Lost one good player in Tuohy.
  • Added one valuable player in Marchbank.
  • Picked up three list cloggers in Smedts, Pickett and Palmer.
  • Downgraded their 2017 second to pick 48 this year and a couple of useless late picks.
They've done really well if their ultimate goal was to have as many first round picks on their list as possible (they'll have 22 after the draft). If that's not what they were looking to do, it's bloody hard to see what they're trying to achieve.
And.....they still have Jones

In the cool light of day I've had a think about our trade period. I'll be honest, was a little underwhelmed.

Cloke in on minimal money, 3 draftees, two rookies and Hamling, Stevens, Minson and Hrovat gone. If we had $700k to throw at Hurley and those guys just left, we're gonna be in a good position to front end some guys and build a solid war chest to attack with over the next couple years, especially with Boyd leaving next year (surely) and Murph might as well. If Adams goes then we need to aim high on a key defender.

JJ and Caleb put on long term deals ASAP then extend Bonts contract for life

plus Adams off maybe plus there are always one or two that want to be traded

Cloke would be 6th in our goal kicking if he played for dogs this year (had the same goal kicking result).
Reckon a huge season next year alongside our new unpredictable forward line

We are great traders. Remember getting Tom Boyd for pick 6 and Griff? What a wonderful trade, has already delivered and will only continue to give. Plus most trades are has-beens or never will be's so the whole trade week is generally over rated.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Value.

Marcus Adams still on the list and willing to play in the RWB next season after all that?

Adelaide?
Entering their window supposedly, lose Lyons for cheap and gain nothing.

Hawthorn?
Lose no 1 and no 2 in the B&F, trade everything this year and next for JOM who hasn't played football in 2 years, Tom Mitchell (who is good) and Tyrone Vickery who isn't as woeful as everyone says, but is still very very average.

Geelong?
Chased Lids, only ended up with Touhy after losing Caddy (nil-all draw), tried to offload Motlop (no buyers), lost Kerstan for nothing and gained his lesser equivalent in Aaron Black after agreeing to carry the last year of his $400k pa contract. Picks out hurt too.

Brisbane?
Lose one of their few decent players (Hanley) at a time they really need to keep players.
Adelaide's isn't good, but like ours, isn't terrible- losing Lyons is pretty comparable to losing Hammer.

Brisbane's retention issues continue to be a worry, but they actually did reasonably in all of their trades (good trade for picks with GWS, reasonably compensated for Hanley, picked up Frost cheaply).

I'd describe Hawthorn's trade period as extremely risky at this stage, rather than necessarily bad. If O'Meara spends the rest of his career chronically injured, they've had a terrible trade period- easily the worst in the league. If he becomes a superstar, they've had a solid one.

Geelong is partly being judged on what they missed out on, rather than what actually happened. They didn't get Deledio, but neither did 16 other teams. It didn't hurt to put their hat in the ring. They got Tuohy cheaply (unless carlton rockets up the ladder or they crash down) and managed to offload a list clogger in Smedts. I don't rate Caddy all that highly (although most others seem to rate him). He just seems vanilla to me. They got decent value for him and cleared some cap space. Kersten is no huge loss, and neither is Vardy. The Black decision is bemusing, but that's just one list clogger.

Carlton picked up the contracts of three list cloggers (and you can bet Palmer's contract is nothing to sneeze at). That's not something I'd be doing if I already had Boekhorst, Lamb, Jones, Sumner, Tutt, Jaksch, Whiley, Everitt and Gorringe on my list.

So our forward line will feature Boyd, Cloke, Crameri, Stringer and Dickson.

The guy who averages 3 goals a game in finals and is a dead eye gets the 5th best defender. Noice.
Plus Mclean, Dunkley, Bont etc
