Round went to South in 1976 as he was never getting the main gig ahead of Dempsey.
Things were looking grim for him at South end of 77 as Teasdale won the Brownlow playing ruck and Len Thompson was at South too.
Four years later Roundy had a Brownlow himself and was club captain soon after.

Not sure Sweet is in that echelon though... but you never know! 😀

Ruck was probably a different role 50 years ago
Ruck was a different role agree as was professionalism, coaching, training etc etc

There are some things that are relevant today as they were in Dempsey's time.

I would back Gary Dempsey's attributes he had back then to be used and as relevant today.

His tap work and ability to clutch marks could be used today.

Some of his stats have lasted the test of time

He also covered a lot of ground, taking marks deep in defence, but also drifting forward. In the 1978 Templeton 15 goal game, Dempsey kicked one of the early goals in the last quarter. Also our round 22(?) game v eventual premiers Richmond in 1973, he pushed forward late while Salmon rucked and kicked 2 crucial goals as we hung on by a point at the G (also Robert Rose's last game of VFL ☹).

Tom Morris reporting a funny situation with Essendon and Massimo D’Ambrosio

He’s a second year rookie, and under AFL rules of a club offers a third year rookie contract, the player can decline and become a UFA. Essendon were apparently unaware of this rule when they offered him a third year rookie deal a couple of weeks ago and have been bargaining with the Hawks for a trade. He will now simply walk to Hawthorn for nothing

I'm going to miss Dodo.

Looking ahead at what our draft hand looks like 2024. No pick before 30 does not look good. Only Collingwood are in a worse position and they won the flag.

Methinks Sammy Power is expecting a big out next year. Maybe Baz, maybe English, maybe maybe.
Me thinks that the club saw this years underperformance as an anomaly and saw Gold Coasts dangling of pick 4 as an expedient way of getting into the elite end of the talent pool. Giving them a chance to instantly refresh our midfield or small forward stocks with elite talent. God knows that both aspects of the team could do with some vitality and class after last seasons lacklustre efforts.

Soldo will be going to Port for a future second and 41. I wonder how Sweet feels now.

Id be staggered if this possibility wasn't laid out in advance when Port recruited Sweet.

Id be equally staggered if Ports negotiations with Soldo didn't pre-date the recruitment of Sweet.

Given that Sweet was uncontracted it makes sense that they'd lock him away early and then start the hard work of getting the contracted Soldo over the line. As Ive said previously aside from Sweets workhorse durability. I see them as much of a muchness with Soldo being a better mark (let's be honest, who isn't'?) the only real game day difference between the two. Either way, the recruitment of these two isnt the ruck panacea that they'd be hoping for and in effect is just a sideways move beyond the middling Scott Lycett.

Who'd have thought that we'd be mid morning on the last day of trade period and all the talk is about Gary Dempsey, Barry Round and Gary Baker.

Kinda shows the AFL are in danger of jumping the shark when it comes to trade period. It becomes less and less interesting and more tedious with every passing year directly in line with the rise in media theatrics and hyperbole around trades.

Seems a fitting full stop to Dodoro's career. Will be sorely missed by 17 clubs.

Isn’t that what Lachie Young did when he went to North

The D’Ambrosio thing is how we nearly were caught out with Lachie Young.

They seriously overestimate how much anybody outside of hothouses of fandom like this one actually cares about any of this crap.

Its almost like they think its armistice day and that the stroke of 3pm everybody will stop what they're doing in observance and reverence.

When in reality it's a slight change in work circumstance for a dozen or so mid tier or worse footballers. Accompanied by trading of draft picks so convolutedly technical they they are barely worth thinking about.
