Somebody else with a bit more knowledge. We have a lot of back end draft picks and in order for us to match a bid on Croft we'd need to use a fairly large number of these. My understanding is we have two list spots available (once factoring in the below). We still haven't made an official decision on Crozier or Bedendo, is it possible both of these lads are either delisted/go to the rookie list? My reading is we'd need at least 4 list spots available if Croft was bid on at pick 10.

Out: Bruce, O'Brien, McLean, Sweet, Hannan
In: Harmes, Coffield, Player drafted at pick 5

My concern with that side is that I feel like small forwards could get a hold of us. Richards is the only one there remotely capable of defending small.
With Durea looking past it maybe Gallagher could pay that role?

I heard someone in the media, pretty sure it was Twomey, say North were likely to go Duursma and Curtin at 2 and 3 if they kept them which would leave us whoever Hawks don't take out of Watson and McKercher.
With Hawthorn getting Ginnivan and D’Ambrosio to replace Brockman, I think they will take McKercher who has been consisently higher than Watson and AFAIK Hawks still have a Tasmanian deal. This would then leave the Dogs with a choice of Watson (small forward) or Sanders (midfielder).

My guts says it will be Sanders as a quality replacement for Treloar and Libba in the future and backup if Baz leaves or McKercher if not taken by the Hawks or higher up the board.

Darcy needs to be able to play more than a handful of games in a row without getting injured before we have any real selection headache. His games to date have not been AFL standard and his injury history is concerning. I think he'll be an absolute top line player all going well but talk of fitting him in being a nightmare is premature.

I think this is a good move. Realistically, in most circumstances we would just plonk Lobb in the ruck and be done with it if English got injured, but we need a mature body for protection at VFL level and a break in case of emergency option at AFL level. Lycett fits the bill.

It does put us in a scary position if English does leave next year, but not many better options.

Lycett would be a nice get as a backup ruck. Wouldn't expect senior games if he came here, but will be able to hold down the fort if needed for a few weeks if Tim went down. Should be able to help out a little with Tim / Darcy's growth and development as well in the Ben Hudson mold.

Agree with your Darcy concerns so it would be nice to get a replacement backup for Sweet and leave Lobb at forward. I just don't think the remuneration will be there for Lycett to make it worth his while as a premiership ruck to leave home and I reckon he will retire.

Brynn Teakle delisted by Port might be gettable and was linked early to any potential Sweet move. All that said Darcy will be third year in the system so I think he will have enough extra strength on top of skill to genuinely compete at AFL level, touch wood on injuries.

If English leaves then I think the Dogs will likely have to go for Sean Darcy from Freo if looking for a top liner or the easier and cheaper option is find a tandem ruck to work in combination with Lobb/Darcy.

Yeah definitely but there’s enough to work with there with Cody, West, Harmes and potentially Watson who’s a bit of a terrier too. I think Cody gets a bad wrap here tbh in regards to his pressure. He definitely needs to learn to stay down and crumb more but he gives his all chasing and tackling - it’s just left to too few to do it so the ones who are look worse.

We just can’t carry Daniel & Macrae as mostly forwards with the talls as well, they need to be utilised elsewhere on the ground.
Everyone forgetting Artie Jones when mentioning small forwards ...... people think he isnt going to make t but he is on the senior list

Darcy is no where near ready to take on key forwards. Couldn't even get through a game against Sydney as second ruck. He's a few years off yet.

I think he'll come good in 2025 when Lobb will be just about done.
Not sure why anyone would want to lockdown Darcy and free up Jones.

Jones is a very important piece for our future. He showed some great signs and put together a few good games but ultimately wasn’t ready for the rigours of week in week our senior football.

Hopefully the shoulder surgery doesn’t put him too far behind and he’ll be able to compete all of preseason even in a non-contact compacity early.

I see Arty as a wingman down the track, he will rotate through the forward line but I don’t think he stays stationed there.

He has a evasiveness and a side-step, these traits will always be the cream on top if the other aspects of his game improve.

Yes to Lycett just for the Jeremy McGovern story

And also to help teach Timmy about the dark arts of hustle and bustle rucking and how to combat it so first gamers don't take him to the cleaners.

Main positive for mine is pick 5, Harmes & Coffield likely push out 3 players to depth in round 1 - let’s say Scott, Baker & Keath as an example. If 1-2 of Cleary, Clarke, Bedendo, Garcia, Or AJ can have a big preseason and push into round 1 contention with a full list that leaves our bottom 6 looking reasonably healthy and a fair improvement on what we were putting out towards the end of this year.

Will be interesting to see what we do with Darcy, I’d imagine similar to last year a big preseason will have him in contention again by round 1. He’s just that good when he’s on the park he forces us to play him. But where?
Gallagher is the one. Stays fit, he jumps over AJ, Clarke, Bedendo, Garcia imo

It’s the only way he’ll get a game for now and I think he has elite traits that would work well there. Do it for 12 months and then eventually take over from Lobb as a forward, with Busslinger taking the defensive role would be ideal
I think it’ll work against teams that dump the ball into the forward line but not against good teams that transition well into attack. Also depends on what heat we provide in the midfield.

I'm very bullish about Artie, he's still very much a boy against men but took some good steps forward this season and with another preseason should improve again. Needs to get stronger/fitter/harder and these things take time. I'm also a Charlie Clarke fanboy as well and was impressed with his spatial awarness late in the season and his creativity. A full preason (his 1st) and I expect he'll push for selection at somepoint in 2024? Lastly Garcia is due some luck with his body at some point, if this kid can gat a clear run at things he'll put his name in the ring. I much prefer him to Vanders as a high half fwd and think he can also become a denfensive mid if his body holds out.....He's as hard as we've got atm (and we need more of it)
