We need Buss to be able to fill a role this year in the 1s.

Hopefully he has a strong start for Footscray and can make his case.

Having another guy who can play the 3rd KPF will be imperative if we want any success this season.

And I'm not against an attempt to develop whatever (relatively weak) developing midfielders we have, should we continue to play poorly.

Like I said in another post, we are about a 28% chance to make finals. We are also more-than-slight favourites against Gold Coast, which is a contributing factor to the 28%. So logically, should we lose to Gold Coast, our finals chancers will crater to sub 15% or whatever, despite only being two games into a 23 game season. I'm all for playing Weightman and West and whoever on the ball, even if it loses us games then Bont centre bounce beyond 70%, if we don't think we can make finals. But we will have 21 games to do it after this week, which in the grand scheme of things is no difference to 22 games if we were to start this week. But let’s try to use Bont and Libba - even to the point of exhaustion - to increase our small chances of making finals this year, first?
I’m all on board with doing what we can to make it until we know we can’t. I would think there would be a benefit in them sharing some of the burden but it’s possible there isn’t or the other candidates are too much of a liability.

Look at Melbournes numbers

Compared to ours:

Melbourne obviously aren’t playing their best players only 60-70% game time in the middle because they’re trying to ‘develop younger players’ they’re doing it because realistically thats the most any mid should be playing most weeks, not 90%
Macrae will probably go at 50% CBA with Smith out when he comes back healthy bringing those numbers back to normal. Low 80's is generally the absolute maximum over a season and being an exception, so Bont and Libba were redlining for sure.

If Macrae is out extended please find me a link to an online panic button. It's absurd how well Sydney are travelling with similar critical injuries to their midfield depth and quality.

Yeah it should definitely be a bit more balanced with Macrae back, but my concern is this coaching group hasn’t been able to get the best out of a group as talented as Bont, Libba, Macrae & Treloar for quite some time. So I don’t have any confidence in them getting the best out of the depth Mids in Harmes, Sanders etc and I’m reluctant to judge them under this current coaching regimen

One would assume Sanders should be fully part of the midfield rotation taking significantly more centre bounces - because he trained in that position in all match sims and in the game vs. Hawthorn, where he was genuinely part of the 50+% rotation. He only took 5 in this game we can assume for the same reason he was subbed out - he was struggling physically.

We have no idea if he's expected to be fully fit and taking 10+ centre bounces next week or if he did struggle so much that he might have to be managed and not play at all next week (which doesn't solve the problem). But the more that I think about it, the more I realise that it's a pretty simple explanation. We planned for Sanders to have 5-10 more centre bounce rotations and he couldn't/didn't. Gallagher and Daniel (4 between them) took the ones that he would have after he was subbed out, though the actual in-game adjustment and substitution meant that the three combined was just 9 as opposed to the 15-20 that we would have been hoping for between those three players.

Few examples around the edges.

Jack Steven went for next to nothing but Geelong were able to take on his salary after he sort of fell off the wagon a bit. If Macrae continues to drop off and becomes literally unplayable, it might be comparable if another team pays the entirety of the remainder of his contract.

Paddy Ryder was worth roughly a pick in the early 20's once all the pick swaps were factored in to ruck only three years for Saints.

We paid it for Treloar, though only 28, nobody expected an output of performance at the level of his four seasons preceeding his last season at the Pies, where he was part of the AA squad of 40 three times.

Shaun Higgins netted North pick 30 for just two years at Geelong.

Fair cop though - other comparable examples like us trading Brian Lake and Adam Cooney, or Melbourne trading for Bernie Vince, were only worth picks in the 30's - so to suggest we would get a first round pick is a bit ambitious. Though as I qualified it really just depends how much of his salary we would be willing to pay.
I’m still dirty on the Lake deal, premiership window team acquires one of the best key backs in the comp for bugger all.

I know there was age queries and a late fallout with us, but Lake types are very rarely available, even more so as a final piece to a puzzle.

Hawthorn would still be having a laugh about that.

I'd absolutely trade Macrae. Not that I want to but for these reasons..
  • We are a middle of the road team
  • He can't play any other position.
  • Bont and Libba are better and we can't carry his lack of speed/burst.
  • Lack of defensive accountability at times
  • Potentially may not age well with his athleticism
  • He is the old game plan. Rack up possessions, chip kick. Low disposal to impact ratio.
  • We should get something decent back for him
  • $ and midfield opportunity for B.Smith

We certainly aren't as good without him for now. But we need change and this is just one for me.

Keep Macrae and trade Bevo is the change needed.

All we have to do is find a small forward crumber or two, find a new ruck, find another key defender (or move a certain individual), find another small defender, and make sure all of these players are ones that do not lack physicality and intent, and find a new coach.

Super easy stuff really.

Not sure how an average team like us have to invest so much keep 4 players Astro, English, JUH and Bont (whatever they are paying him he is worth it). Reported we will need to pay over million to keep JUH which we will need to do. A lot of this is on potential he will be on more the Charlie Curnow who is already a super star. I have not even included Bailey Smith who we cannot retain if we keep JUH and Tim.

Maybe it is Tim that goes because we just cannot afford to pay this much for a ruckman,

Especially a Timid ruckman

To lessen this high ratio of 90% Bont and Libba at centre bounces, why not try swapping Bont with Richards or even Naughts… and Libba with Weightman….
Anything to shake things up a bit… Christ it couldn’t hurt to take a few risks?

Been Reported on Gettable that the club have offered Bailey Smith a 2 year contract extension

Barely an inconvenience
