Hello Eagles fans!

The embedded resources below are kept up to date by the trade board mods (as much as possible – we are human after all). Enjoy!

Wait....what?

We're going to go out and get all of Jed Busslinger, Sam Taylor, Shai Bolton AND Cam Zurhaar?!!!

It's hard to make a list when you're only allowed to recruit WA players.

AFL on hard mode.

If you want a thicc Boi contested bull, get Stevens if he's still available. At least he uses the ball very well, as well as win clearances and tackles.

Too many knocks on Halls game to pick him up early in the 2nd round.

Knock on Stevens is he is one paced and hence may struggle to keep up at AFL level and get from stoppage to stoppage and run with the overlapping handball surge style.

Hamish Brayshaw speed?

Would suit the Swans and a small SCG.

I love the fact that Brizkent is advocating splitting top end picks. Less this year and more next year if I read his explanations correctly. I might not have read it perfectly the first time which is possibly why I am so grateful for the repeated explanations.

Let us look at the Lion's list and see why they might have done so well.

1. They rorted the system with Daniher and the FA. They put a contract together for the Drug Rats to get to get band 1 compensation and then changed the contract later that year to reduce the $ per year and lengthen the years which in all likelihood would have got the Drug Rats end of round 1 and likely they match. Do you think Dodoro was in on that rort?
This is straight up incorrect. We did not change the contract. That is expressly against AFL rules.

Daniher did extend his contract a further two years, after his first season at the Lions, on substantially less coin, but the second and third years of his original contract stayed exactly the same.
2. They rorted the system with Gunston who was a UFA and in order to not revoke the NotStay compensation, the gave the Hawks some go quietly late pick. Not against the rules but morally wrong.
This is correct. All within the rules. And we weren’t the first team to do it.
3. They got the best player in the draft in Ashcroft as a Father/Son deal at pick 2 while GWS picked the 5th or later best player at 1 to make him and the club feel good about climbing up the board to get someone very average. Lions also got another F/S rising star nominee in Fletcher. I think that is called being kissed three times on the old fellah.
This is correct.

Pretty sure most posters here like being kissed on the old fella.
4. In 2016 when armed with pick 2, GWS did Brisbane a massive favour in targeting McGrath as a high need. GWS were so full of great midfielders on massive contracts that they needed a half back flanker to balance the team and got a hard on for Andy. So desperately that they gave up a later first rounder to get from 2 to 3. Ever luckier for Brisbane was the ego of Dodoro who did not want to be seen to be giving away the golden ticket to the new boys. Let's be clear, McCluggage had been seen as the best in his cohort for months and every club except the Drug Rats knew it. GWS could afford being selective so list balance was more important. Imagine what Dodoro would have knocked back from moving from 1 to 2? At least 1 first round pick and it might have meant that Dodoro would not have needed to send 2 first round picks to GWS for Dylan Shiel (9 and 14). So that mistake cost Essendon 3 first round picks. Anyway, Lions got McCluggage and Berry out of that deal.

Can the above be considered splitting a high end pick or is it splitting your sides laughing at the stupidity of Essendon?
Again all correct.

Everyone likes a laugh at Essendon’s and Dodoro’s expense.
5. 5 Academy picks that non-Qld/NSW teams cannot get. These players were Andrews, Himmelberg, Payne, Colman and Zorko (slightly different rules). Payne helped get them to the GF but was injured - I think he did enough to suggest it helped the Lions.
This is incorrect on two accounts.

Himmelberg x2 were never priority access to Lions. Both grew up in NSW in the Giants academy. That’s why Harry plays for GWS.

Elliot plays for Adelaide, because he spent 12 months in our academy when his family moved to Brisbane, and because he spent less than 5 years in our academy zone, was not eligible to us.

Secondly, Zorko was not zoned to the Lions.

And he was passed over in the National draft 5 years in a row, being recruited as a mature age recruit. First being draft eligible in 2007.

He was draft eligible in 2007 & 2008, before being zoned to the new GC team in 2009.

Zorko was recruited by Gold Coast as a zone selection in 2012, and we traded for him then.

So AFL clubs could still have drafted Zorko in 2009, 2010 & 2011 when GC passed on preselecting him as a zone selection before the draft those years.
6. Port have had a habit of underpaying present players and overpaying for free agents. A toxic captain that they did well to exit out of the club and again kissed on the old fellah with an end of R1 compensation. Funny how a club funded by the AFL finishing with the wooded spoon gets a favourable FA pick.
We all wish Port overpaid Rockliff, so we could have received band 1 compensation. Alas, Port were stingy and only offered Rockliff a $650k per contract.

Fun fact. I used to work with Rockliff’s missus, before they moved. Used to hear lots of stories and injury updates.
7. Knowing they have Ashcroft II coming in 2024, they can already start shaping their 2023 draft hand an be happy with late picks.
True.
So in all of the Lion's moves, I am not really sure how they are pertinent to our situation.
Never said any were.
Other top end draft decisions -
- 2018 with a really great top end draft they traded out of the Rozee (5) and then the Ben King (6) picks to land Neale.
Win.
- 2017 they missed the chance to split in 2018 when faced with a very average Raynor (but to be fair he was favourite to be pick 1) when and a split would have been desirable.
No one thought Rayner was average then. Bit of revisionist history on your part here.

Big debate was the go home factor.
Not sure if it was on offer but Carlton had 3 and 10 and Saints had 7 and 8. Not saying who was taken at that pick were right but depth in the draft would have been worthwhile splitting. To be fair, they picked up Zac Bailey and Starcevich in late R1 picks that year. Just imagine if they had of ended up with Brayshaw, Oscar Allen, Bailey and Starcevich out of that draft!!
We also had pick 12 in the 2017 draft, but decided to trade it for Charlie Cameron.

I was all in on the LDU train, that draft. Really wanted Oscar Allen with our second pick.
- 2015 Josh Schacke was a bust and the Lions got sucked into the Ï will continue my father's legacy" story.
Again some revisionist history on your part. We desperately needed a KPF, and Schache had just set the U18 Championship record for goals. Was genuinely regarded as a top 5 draftee, and was “the face” of the AFL pre-draft video.

Yes there was a Lions link as well.
So none of these really help us now. The absence of a real academy means we cannot trade in points which is such a huge advantage to the northern clubs.
Have never said any of that has any relevance to West Coast, apart from saying WC lack a player like Rockliff who is “expendable”, to let walk for decent draft compensation.

Also have openly said the Northern academies are a leg up, and something to be used.
What are our options for getting better in a shorter time?

In 2022 when we traded out of pick 2 last year, we had the mummy's boys not wanting to leave and a very even dozen or so. It made sense to split and we did well.
All valid. The only discussion here is that WC drafted the west Aussie boys. Passed on Phillipou with your first pick (big discussion point here at the time).
With 2023, we have had offers for the Harley ticket and the Norf beggar bowl picks are a joke. Hawks have come up with the best offer but early days. I expect Norf to come up with a better offer but not 2 and 3 which is why we will not split.
Just Pick Reid.
Being a better WA option that Fremantle. Thanks to Pirate Feather Bell, we are ahead of the Violet Crumbles and should continue to be. I expect Brockman to be the start of a steady stream of talent returning home wanting to be Eagles.
Checks 2023 ladder.

We now have a mid season draft and getting Culley and Maric feel like we have already got 2 extra R2 players. Not expecting A Grade but seeing genuine 100 plus games in Maric and hopefully the same for Culley. I can see us getting another early pick in 2024 mid season draft.
Should be some good talent in next years MSD.
Knowing more about the local players in their draft years. We seem to have some success with Ginbey and Hewett. With some luck, Don Pyke comes in and repairs relationships with the WAFL clubs.
Just Pick Collard.
Salary Cap. Eagles and Essendon are the only 2 who have not put the EBA increase trigger in majority of contracts. This hurt in Covid days but will come back and be a great assistance in future years. There will be loads of agents wanting to bring their players to the club as we will be able to pay more.
This is incorrect. Lions don’t include EBA increases in our contracts either. There are a couple of other clubs Twomey has mentioned as well.
Loyalty - we have an extremely good retention history. Forget Judd (who delivered a GF, Normie and Brownlow and we got a great return). I have no doubt that the retention will continue to be high.
Can’t lose players you don’t pick.
The last 2 years have been a great start to the rebuild. I see us getting another good haul in 2023 and 2024 and we will stat to climb quickly.

Oh and the other good thing - we have the confidence to just take Reid.

They aren’t doing that for the same reason they aren’t doing 2+3 - it is massive overs in our favour.

If we are actually interested in trading for an offer that they may make I would think 2, a pick in the 6-10 range then either 18 or a F2nd as the cherry is the best we can hope for. Still not convinced Nth offer it.

And I think most of us are OK with mediocre offers. No is one of two options for us (and results in taking the best player in the draft), and we have no reason to move to a yes unless convinced by something significant.

We hold the golden ticket and potential elite gun. We hold it or someone offers overs. That's the point.

I suspect that’s only Round 1. 🥊

In the Red Corner we have briztoon.

In the Blue Corner we have ATG.

Suspect this goes the full nine rounds, with a points decision to decide the winner.

Good lord.

That's what y'all get for tagging him with funny names.

I was on a plane ✈️ yesterday and only landed late last night. Wake up to a gazzilion tags, because some little kent needed a lesson on how to sh!tpost and spent the rest of his days getting his jollies on.

Mediocre offers mean that we say no and JTR, think we are on the same page here that this is a win.

No not OK with accepting mediocre offers, yes OK with mediocre being the best we are offered as we can and will say no and get our next #9 in the draft.

How many rounds was that mega post by Briztoon? Felt like at least 5-6 rounds right there.

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app

From what I know of briztoon, that’s just the pre fight warm up.

The toon doesn’t do things by halves.

Then we take reid. And 3 speculative picks.

Not necessary, as has been mentioned a few times already in here that what the club considers overs or fair may be vastly different to what posters in here consider a fair deal.

Already been reported that the Eagles have said they would consider 2 & 3 it’s just a matter of how far Nth are prepared to go or whether the Eagles are prepared to negotiate on that position.

Whether you or other posters agree with that is irrelevant.

Listening to Barrett talk on AFL Daily about Norf's inability to retain someone like JHF or Reid due to being a mud club makes me wonder how JHF would have gone had he landed at WC.

Honestly, I reckon he'd have stayed with us due to the crowds, Hurn, Shuey etc.
Port were always in the ear of JHF. Just like the Crows have come out and said they will be targeting SA to return home. Seems to be working, I think the Eagles recruiting are on the back foot a lot of the times. Would love to know if we spoke to Sheldrick at all before he resigned.

Can anyone dig up any WA links for JUH? Out of contract end of next year and would be the perfect apprentice to OA. Would much rather throw a big contract at him rather than English.

Sydney reportedly after JUH but also have L McDonald out of contract end of next year.

Is our new recruiting manager Flyin Ryan getting in his ear yet??

imagine what he would cost.
both in terms of salary and picks.

PSD threat would help, but im guessing a deal would get done and it would be out first and F1 at a minimum (likely two top 2-3 picks.)

cant fit everyone on the list, and given his costs, he shouldn't be pursued.

I feel Freo is all over McDonald and in his ear.

Given Swans interest in Naughton and now JUH.

McDonald is def gettable and seems Freo is in the box seat with 3x F1

Three shit F1 vs whatever low pick we have (prob 1-4). We can easily blow them out of the water if we think he's worth it. Or split for two top 10 picks and trade one of those plus F1.
