Imagine how much better our side would look with smith, stringer and saad compared to wells, aish and Mayne

Not convinced about Stringer. And not convinced that a couple of small forwards was really what Essendon need.

What happened last year at Collingwood is water under the bridge now. Just as what happened at Essendon to put them in this position is water under the bridge.

I'd still rather be a Collingwood supporter than an Essendon supporter. Even with Mayne.

I really don't get the procrastination during trade period. I understand a lot of clubs have "in-principle" agreements and just wait for other deals to get done to see what picks are left, but surely you just get your deals done early and then use the remainder of the trade period to work on other aspects of your list, or your draft position.

I reckon Hawthorn have been the masters over recent years. They always get their bigger trades done early. Essendon this year have also done it well.

Just get the deals done and move on. And be a bit bold. It really surprises me how conservative sides are. We should be looking at making salary saving trades. Trading Mayne, Blair and Oxley out for example, for basically no return. Similar to what we did last year with Cloke. Even if we took on half of Mayne's salary, and replaced him with a kid on minimum wage, we still free up a half a million dollars over the last 3 years of his contract.

How do we get our hands on a second rounder?

That's what would make me happy this trade period, or at least maybe an early 3rd rounder. I think that would place us nicely to grab a couple of nice talls later on.

Devon Smith was a bargain for Essendon. Little wonder they got it done early, the Giants gave him away for a packet of Cheezels when you take into account they got two second round picks AND Smith for pick 11.

Besides they needed to get the Smith deal done so that 11 was off the table for the Stringer deal. Bad luck to the Dogs for stringering along.....they blew their chances....could have dealt earl and gazumped the Giants...

I've been thinking about this too. The most logical explanation I can come up with is a hypothetical, but just imagine this:

We're looking to recruit Lynch for two first rounders. Gold Coast on the other hand are trying to get Weller without giving up a first round, as all they have is pick 2 and a likely top 5 next year in a strong draft.

If we traded for Lynch, suddenly Gold Coast have 4 first round picks to offer Freo. And Freo won't do a deal until they get one of them, so Gold Coast postpone our deal until the last hour to disable Freo's ability to obtain our pick.

Wait... this is something the GCS should be looking to do! Trade us Lynch and use one of our picks for Weller!

I think the lack of trades in this years period is mainly due to the 2018 "superdraft" as many are calling it.

No one (well apart from the Dees) wants to trade away a first round pick from next year's draft. Which in turn means there's very little currency out there other then current listed players.

We will still see plenty of trades go through in the final few days but most of them will be of smaller value.

As for us, my prediction for the next few weeks would be;

1. Trade 4th-5th round pick for Sam Murray (today or tomorrow)
2. Pick up Stewart Crameri and another player as a DFA before the draft
3. Draft Aaron Naughton (hopefully) to form a strong partnership with McLarty for next 10 years.
4. Nominate father/son Tyler Brown. We are hoping no one even bids on him then we will use the final spot on our senior list, picking him up with our final pick in the draft.
5. Draft and rookie list height, again. Has to be our approach, our KPP stocks are close to league worse.

Thats four new players on the senior list. We only have room for one as it stands at the moment (plenty of room on the rookie list though)

So we need three vacancies created on the senior list.

Don’t we have 2 spots available right now?
Didnt we go with 39 senior players into 2017 and then upgrade Keeffe in the preseason to make it 40? And Oxley to be delisted and rookied should make it 3 spots

Probably the only one that feels this but I think we are going to regret missing out on Schache or choosing to miss out. I think he will be a steal.

Seems my opinion on him changes daily.

Today i've woken up and i would like Schache!

Pick 6 and 36 for Schache and 12/18

Gives Lions a red hot crack of picking up Rayner and Dow.

Been told by someone close to the club that we will do nothing this trade period unless it costs a packet of crisps.

The plan (he referred to it as the bookend play, I prefer double Toms) is to draft best available be it mid or key this year and make a gargantuan play for Tom McDonald and Tom Lynch next year.

Rip me to shreds but he's been accurate in the past and there's a feeling the Dees are exposed now with what they are going to pay Lever.

If true super smart play
McDonald would be a great get , aerobic beast, good 1 on 1 and hoses best mate
Look good swapping with darcy
Lynch could be too costly, complicated and we can blow dees out of the park as we have plenty of space and 40% of the list available
VERY WELL PLACED

I reckon floating Fas out West or Aish to SA would have been our best chance to get back into the draft between 20-35; but sounds like both will stay.

Don't know how but I'd actually prefer us to try and land a future 2nd or 3rd instead of getting one this year. Gives us more trading currency next year when we are likely to be more active than this trade period or at worst a better draft hand in a mooted better draft.

No he's a dud
List clogger
Mick was on SEN and pointed out his morning he shirks the contest

Would we be keen on swapping 2nd and 3rd round picks from this year and next with GCS?

Eg: Collingwood lose pick 38 and 2018 2nd round pick for pick 24 this year and GCS next year's 3rd round pick?
Gold Coast could finish bottom 3 and we could still end up with a pick in the 40's. Also, we are more likely to trade players next year than this year. It's something I think we should consider.

Is the Elephant in the room here Schache. I feel like this is damned if we do damned if we don't. at the beginning of the trade period I was a NO. but I'm leaning to yes now. I get why the club doesn't want to give up this years pick. but perhaps we can give Brisbane a future 1st round pick ?

Not sure losing Wells would make us better in the short term but I get where you are coming from.
