It really screws us with our academy players. It constrains us in terms of our points because we need to use our original picks. The Murray trade (facepalm). I wouldn't be surprised if we decide not to match bids if they're too steep. Any points we go over comes straight off next years first rounder so that's incentive not to over pay. It's a dumb rule.
Surely we could trade this compo pick to another club for 2 later picks that have points attached? Or is that no possible to do so?

I thought we had established that if the bid we match comes after our first rounder then the points deficit comes off our 2019 2nd ....and so on?? Could easily be wrong but I think I remember this specific point being discussed earlier.

I may be mistaken then. I thought it was the first but very happy to be corrected on that.

That might be a loop hole. The rule is specifically around using a compo pick on academy players. That section of the CBA is quiet on what you're suggesting.

Median wage is $350k, I'd say he's a $400k a year player. Absolutely.

Okay fair call. Not too familiar with wage distrubution of the side.
I still think he would have tabled offers 10-20% above what we are offering, causing the descision to stall. Would be interesting to see what he takes.

I would doubt we would be offering more than 400k on a multi year deal though.

Why does it screw us? We're unlikely to have many points from compensation picks.

It would be meaningless picks if it was to occur because the deal would be we would takeover his back-ended contract (which is unconditional). Patton has allegedly been advised that he needs to strip some bulk off to lessen the load on his knees and assist his mobility. Can you think of any AFL player that has done 3 ACL's and continued playing successfully, without doing a 4th?
David Schwarz won a B&F after his 3rd knee reco

They can't use a compo pick for FS or academy bid matching from what is written in the CBA.

Does that hold true if the pick is traded or does it simply apply to the team that gets the compo?

Mitch McGovern set to join Carlton after Blues secure picks in trade with Sydney

CARLTON and Adelaide have produced a rapid fire trade to get Mitch McGovern to Ikon Park a year after protracted negotiations over Bryce Gibbs.

The exciting swingman will become a Blue after Carlton agreed to trade two mid-20s picks to Sydney for the Swans No.13 pick.

As revealed by the Herald Sun last week, Adelaide had keen interest in Sturt forward Shane McAdam, who has been signed as a state league player by the Carlton.

They will send 13 and McAdam to the Crows for McGovern, sealing the deal only two days into the trade period.

The No.13 pick came from Sydney, who has swapped that early selection in exchange for picks 26 and 28 from Carlton.

The combined points value of those two picks is 1406 points – which equates to a selection between pick No.9 and 10.

But Carlton nails the McGovern trade through that swap and Sydney will use those picks to secure Nick Blakey, an academy selection set to go in the top 10.

Carlton missed out on the prize signature of GWS midfielder Dylan Shiel on Tuesday but it is a huge coup to sign up a player like McGovern.

The Blues can now work on a deal for Will Setterfield, the GWS midfielder taken at pick No.5 two seasons ago, who has requested a trade from the Giants.

They might be forced to use future picks to nail that deal given their next pick in the current draft is in the mid-60s.

A trade of late picks might help finalise the McGovern deal, handing Carlton more points in the deal.

Carlton will also lodge an official offer for free agent Alex Fasolo on a three-year deal on Wednesday.

The McGovern deal shows that despite criticism of the player movement system clubs are able to use cap space to lure players to sides outside the eight.

Carlton will secure McGovern, Brisbane will eventually find a way to trade for Lachie Neale and premiership player Scott Lycett on Tuesday headed to Port Adelaide as a free agent.

Bye bye Fas. So, anyone guess what Compo he will attract after getting 3yr deal at the Scum?
Not happy with this one little bit. Has all the attributes and proven ability to contribute on game day.

Poor character shown by Fas to not turn it around like Mayne, or some of the other injury prone types.

I hope he never plays in another final again with the scum.

disagree, he's a good kick and reasonable overhead for his size but other than that he's below average in most other areas.

Probably why and with good reason, wasn’t given a run in Seniors even with all our injuries and not named even as emergency (I could be wrong) during our finals campaign.

We have the cap space, given we would have thrown money towards Lynch and May. I dont think its the space thats the issue, its his salary.
he should be on around 200-250k per year on a 3-4 year deal. he is a good player, and a pillar in defense, but not a KPP. unless Sydnay have offered him close t0 350k, i dont see him leaving

Seriously? He would have earned $200-250k in the 2nd year of his draftee contract given prescribed bases and match payments. Maybe something in the $400-500k range is what you meant. The new average under the new TPP is expected to be around $380-400k, I think he's worth more than that.

I thought at the time if we failed to have the points to match the bid going into deficit that would come off our first rounder next year. That would be really bad. Thats wrong though and it depends when the bid comes in as to what picks are affected if there is a deficit. Having points from the compensation pick would help prevent that problem. Not having the second rounder and those points could really hurt.

You're not wrong. I don't even think he was named as an emergency after he recovered from his syndesmosis at all. Even after he kicked five in the VFL one week.

I think he's talented enough to earn another opportunity elsewhere. I won't boo him - chances are he would have been delisted by us anyway. He's just doing what he can to stay employed in his chosen career.

I'll always wish the Faz well and think he'll give the blues a good season or two. He's the kind of guy who will work hard to be accepted, but then rest on his laurels once he's part of the group. I reckon there will be moans of what have we let go, whilst he's doing well in the honeymoon period with the blues.
