Yup, those soft tissue injury’s are really a killer especially for those veteran players once they start creeping in you really need to manage them and understand that output will diminish especially when it comes to leg speed and need to miss quite a lot of games to be managed properly

Once the calf problems set in it’s pretty much the end.

Some of our supporters think he's cooked but he's had his reasons for some slightly down form. Still has good footy in him if he stays on the park.

Doubt we will get anything in return but we need to turnover our defence so it's not the end of the world.

He doesn’t need to do a lot to match what Astbury yet offered us this year. Grimes and Balta will still get the biggest roles, he’ll have to sit deep and intercept and be ready to swap when a forward comes to goal. We aren’t looking for Rance like output, just better than Garthwaite who got pushed over by a flanker last match.

Just find it bizarre that clubs are offered any compensation when a player leaves at the end of a contract.

They weren't prepared to make the hard call (AFL). It would be pretty simple....

Not unhappy with the Tarrant rumours, he's all class as a player and person, perfect mentor type, so if the medical side checks out he'll be a good short term addition.

Thomas is the only more exposed Norf player that really excites me, strongly suspect he'll and up valued highly elite once he starts running out games properly and his kicking lifts a notch in line with that.

Lost experience with Astbury and given the injuries to Vlastin, Broad, Balta Houli and Astbury we had a very inexperienced defense.

Get both say you had Tarrant as the starter with Balta and Broad as the talls. Grimes takes the Fritcsh types and Vlastin gets back to the intercept role.

If we cop injuries and need experience we have one experienced ready to go. Gives us the flexibility if CCJ and Chol are both gone we have the option of Balta going forward if say Lynch was injured.

But with Atkins being exactly the same length and value and even 2 years younger is almost an identical comparison

You are forgetting the main point in all of this. The AFL decides. The 'formula' doesn't really exist. It's a guide. If we hadn't won 3 flags and they were feeling sorry for us then it could go our way but we have, they don't and it won't.

I say get BOTH Tarrant and Talia. Unleash Balta as an unstoppable attacking weapon. Put him and short on a wing and bomb it down forward. Leave Old man Riewoldt and Lynch with a tenacious crumber like MJR and or stack up forward then watch us revolutionise the game. I dare any opposition team to leave our forwards unguarded. That's how you open up the game and clear congestion. Balta is Great down back but is stifled time to unleash the beast!!!!! Play him wing/ on ball/ HFF anywhere he can launch to the goals. Gives us 2 more flags and time to draft/ poach younger KPP's Talia and Tarrant are cheap because they know they have limited chance of ultimate glory. We're a perfect 2 year fit.

Talia is a negating lock down defender - not much more to his game.

Tarrant is capable of locking down but also is a great intercept player and provides rebound out of defence - he is a much better player than Talia.

Also, expect Tarrant to be included in the trade for CCJ so it won't impact the Chol compensation - I expect an amical deal as they will want to look after Robbie too.

Astbury averaged 13.71 disposals last season despite playing early with a dodgy achilles. That is the about the same as both Talia and Tarrant over their careers. Astbury still under rated.

Good idea to bring aTalia or Tarrant type in, costs us nothing picks wise & keeps us in the hunt whilst we have the opportunity!

Plus with our strong draft hand we still get to refresh the list with some quality kids

Tarrant makes a tonne of sense, seriously underrated and honestly next season would be a waste without him/talia replacing astbury so i'm pretty rapt the club's sorted this out (or at least is trying to). As other posters have said we have very limited KPD depth so he's not depriving young players of games so we can still use our massive draft haul to insulate us from the cliff in terms of age in a year or 2. Also having him and grimes for younger KPDs can't be underestimated.

In terms of FA compo, firstly does anyone know what we'd be looking at for chol? If it's end of second/mid-third I'm not too fussed by losing that, we've got 6 picks inside 44ish and we aren't going to use 7, so another pick around 40 doesn't make much difference, unless we could trade it up. Although if people are saying tarrant won't get any compo cause of age, surely that means it wouldn't affect chol?
