I still don’t get this ******* Bowes thing. Absolutely ridiculous
Suns kept pushing back parts of his contract to the last 2 years, now $850K each year. they don't want to pay it and are using pick 7 to bride a club to take the stupid contract on. AFL has green lit this, as he Pies, Giants etc are all in the same boat.

So, e.g., the Giants could push one of their overpaid guys out with a high pick as sweetener.

Basically if you stuff up your salary cap you can buy your way out of it with a team that has cap space getting the pick as well as the over paid player.

How the hell Geelong can do this?? They won the premiership and have $850K sitting around doing nothing + trading in other players. Makes the criticism of the Tigers look stupid.

Richmond offer 2 guys 7 year contracts at around 750k a year and the system is broken, top teams shouldnt be allowed to trade for players from other struggling teams.

Cats pay $850k for 2 years to a guy who cant even make it into a struggling teams 1st side and get pick 7 as a cherry and its all ok. I say well played cats but STFU to the media pushing one sided narratives because you have beef with a particular side.

Spare me.
He's really not that good but the pick 7 makes it a good deal for them.

I'm assuming they somehow convinced him to spread the payments. Good operators down the highway but make no mistake, he's nowhere near the player of Taranto or Hopper which if why he was stuck in the back pocket taking kick ins.

Yes this exactly, great work by Geelong if they can make the payments work, win the premiership and get pick 7, great job.

But as you said the way media see one teams moves as outrageous, ruining the league and needing serious changes for equalization vs. great management, excellent job and everybody should be more like them, is laughable.

The best part about the Bowes deal is how the AFL media (Barrett) spoke glowingly of how smart Geelong were in not matching RFC's offer to hopper. They have rigid rules on how much they pay players and stick to them to keep everyone happy and it is part of the keys to success. Next minute they look to trade in a way overpriced Bowes.
As I recall, any space in the cap after our flags was used to reward players.
If I was an underpaid Geelong player, I’d be pissed off with Bowes taking the cream ..

Have to assume they rate him and spread his money across 3-4 years otherwise it makes no sense.

Hawkins must be filthy getting paid unders his whole career and then watches some young guy who cant even make it into the Suns 22 come and earn 850K a year LOL
I assume you do realise that his $850k for two years will be restructured over 4 years in all likelihood? It’s a good deal for the Cats😡, but we don’t yet know what they are giving upon the deal to get him. And I don’t mind him as a player, he’s got ability that they could well extract

He’s owed 1.6 for the next 2 years
If you wanna spread it out over 4 years you still need to pay him the 1.6 and he isn’t playing the final two years for free

They will restructure it to $400k x 4 years or thereabouts

He’s owed 1.6 million for the next 2 years
Why would he take 1.6 million for 4 years

They’ll likely have to structure it to be 2 million over 4 and spread it out to fit him in
It’s still 500k a year for 4

It’s a huge risk
