just wonderin how you guys rate the current trade system , do you think it can be improved if so please give some suggestions .

I am fairly happy with the current system although i believe not as many trades get done due to the fact that trade (week) is not long enough and should be atleast 2 weeks , or do you guys think that our trade system should be like the one in soccer where they have a whole month to trade .

Anyway just wondering what you guys think . Thoughts ?

If anything, it should be shorter, something like 48 hours. Most of the trades are say 85% done even before the Trade Week starts. IMO, the most frustrating part of AFL footy. Every year you think that we might see some action, and every year we are disappointed.

There has to be a better way, i'm just not sure what that would be.

Personally would like a 4-6 weeks transfer period in which clubs just contact each other and arrange things between themselves. Give them time to do things properly. Sticking them all in one room and giving them a week seems a good way of creating unnecessary game playing. Would also be less stressful for players as less opportunity and incentive for clubs to leak information and play games through the media (Pelchan's recent efforts spring to mind).

Need something shorter so HBF doesn't have a heart attack next year ;)

I'm with HBF. Starts 10 am Thursday. Finishes 2pm Friday.

If you had a 6 week trade period........don't kid yourself that things would change......they would still be playing "first to blink" until 1:55pm on the Friday, and we wouold have to endure weeks of speculation (4 days is more than enough, plus the week leading up to it).

The only other thing I hated during trade week was the complete lack of acknowledgement to the trading party.
E.g. For a trade to happen all three parties need to be happy with the terms. Thornton and the Hawks were happy, we were not.
So instead of people saying, "well the Blues aren't happy so the deal will have to be upped, or re-presented".....all of a sudden we were being threatened with "restraint of trade" etc.
I know clubs will always quivel about players value but the terms should be quite clear so no club feels the weight of legal action should they decline a trade. Well done Blues.

I'd go for a much longer trade period - say from the end of the season to the current trade deadline.

Sure, you'd probably get the same stupid posturing from teams trying to jostle for position, and plenty of speculation and rumours, but you might also see teams get over themselves and start to think about how to build a decent list rather than just trying to play games with each other.

But I'd also throw in real free agency so that players and agents can sort out for themselves the option that suits them best. Maybe just make it similar to the NBA system. Restricted free agency for players coming off their first contract (so they can sign where they like, but their current club can over-rule those terms if they want and take them back), and full free agency for players coming off their second contract (ie guys likely to be 25+). So much of the posturing of the last couple of weeks could have been avoided if that was the case. Thornton and Russell could have just signed contracts, Carlton could have matched if they thought it was worth it, and then could have got on with actually doing something productive in trade week.

We'd end up with the ridiculous situation as they have in the NRL where you get traded after round 1, or mid way through the year, still have to play with your team mates who know you don't want to be there....play against your new club - are you tackling just as hard???
= Joke.

Don't think it has anything to do with the time frame, as others have indicated it seems to always come down to the last hour or so of trade despite the length of time.

Needs massive reforms, starting with:

Remove the PSD.

5 day trade period.

First 2 days of the trade period is for uncontracted players. If deals are not struck, these players either re-sign or go into the National draft. These uncontracted players that enter the National draft, are then picked up at market value for that year. That pick then goes to the club the player was at.

Example: Thornton could have gone into the National draft, If the Dogs use pick 11 on Thornton that pick would go to Carlton, etc

The remaining 3 days are for contracted players that are considering a change or the club is wanting to shop them around.

Many more deals would be done under this system, players could not do the wrong thing by the club by entering the PSD. Clubs could not do the wrong thing by the player, as the player has to agreed to any trade.

As per this year, deals were held up due to Thornton, Everitt and Polak wanting to change clubs for various reasons, these would have been finalised one way or another before Wednesday morning.

I think you have some real good ideas there, my only point is that each club wouldn't know how many of their uncontracted players who enter national draft would be drafted, therefore how could they juggle their list size.

Pre-season draft is an absolute waste of time. also not sure many players would enter national draft not knowing which club would pick them up.

Keep fine tuning your ideas & send to AFL when you have nailed it.
