If we are 99% committed to picking up both Conway and Ticker, maybe we can do a Melbourne and trade away our first pick, leaving only our second and third round picks when it comes to academy bidding.

Father son and academy bidding is done before trade week to prevent that loophole being exploited.

What Melbourne did was completely different. They essentially bribed the Suns to stop them bidding on Viney so Melbourne could get him with a second rounder.

Ah ok, I thought it was the other way around, I have remembered incorrectly.

Would be Buddy marvellous if we can sign him up. If the Suns are willing to pay 1million dollars for Hunt, then I think paying over a mil for Buddy is a great deal.

I know you were saying it a bit in jest, but the Suns aren't *really* paying a million for Hunt (at least not themselves :p)

I can see Patty K asking to be traded. Being from a Greek background the pull of family is going to be strong, can't see him staying.

Bullshit. If he was going to leave he would've done it when his initial contract ended. He re-signed under some speculation but he has stayed. I have no doubt that if he was going to leave he would've done it at an immature point of his life and career.

Quite the ethnic stereotype this. Not much different from saying that an Indigenous player could go walkabout at any time - something for which you'd be rightfully clipped for.

Except for the fact that one of the comments implies a strong, loyal family bond, and the other implies, unreliability, the urge to disappear from your commitments and you that you are inherently incapable of adapting to and staying focused to a modern lifestyle??

I don't know what Patty will do at seasons end, the fact he can hardly get a game would worry me before I assumed anything about his career choices due to his ethnicity, he did stress several times that being from a big Greek family he fund the move very difficult in his first year so to bring that up when discussing his future is more than reasonable IMO.

Aboriginal players get upset with being stereotyped as quick magically skilled players which is a very positive stereotype. They want to be seen as an individual and consider the stereotype to be as racist as the negative one.

Grouping people by race whether with positive or negative connotation is still racist in the current very politically correct environment.

Yep. Goodes has said this on a few occasions before.

Was happy to let this post go, but I had to distance myself from being implicitly assumed to have the same view of what the term "walkabout" entails. In its proper context (which is how I wanted to use it) it isn't about walking away from your "responsibilities" at all. It is more seen as a positive thing, a reconnection with country. So yeah, in my mind, neither of them are "negative" behaviours and that doesn't really tally with your counterpoint.

Just wanted to put that out there for reputational factors.

Agree with what POBT and Quigley are saying completely.

Yeah I am not overly concerned either way. I know what the Term 'Walk about' means for indigenous Australians, it is about independence, reflection and becoming a man. I also know that when a football fan, forum user or recruiter uses the term 'Walk about' in relation to footy, it is nearly always used to describe or imply walking away from ones commitments, which is what I was refecting on. Had I known you were talking about the actual 6 month spiritual journey, which I didn't think you were given it is in relattion to football and patty leaving, I would have had no reason to post. You compared the two comments, and used it as an example as to why a post was inapproriate. I am of the belief, one is overtly offensive (in the context it is generally used in relation to indigenous players) and the other was not in the same category. We can split hairs on the matter, I just thought it was a bit sharp to say - "something for which you'd be rightfully clipped for" in relation to the post about Patty.

He himself acknowledged in his first year -

"Obviously in the end I wanted to get drafted - that was my main goal - but the circumstances were a bit different to the average, normal Australian kid getting drafted"

And this was in relation to his large, tightly knit, Greek family. I don't want to fall into the trap of assuming because the person of ethnicity isn't offended that stereo typing is ok, I just feel that refecting on this element of Patty's life is not deserving of a whack nor should a poster be accused of racism when bringing it up, it is a huge part of his footballing life.

I just think painting someone with the racism brush should be done carefully.

Interesting that most football fans, forum users etc when they talk about the pull of the family or similar quotes do so in a negative light and as evidence that the person involved is not mentally strong and independent and is a bit of a mummies boy. It is nearly always used negatively in regard to the individual. So whilst you can say that you were using it in a positive light you may have been blind to the fact that you were perpetuating a negative stereotype to the forum at large.

To some of the posters above.

Do you have any Greek mates? I do and they all seem to have a close bond with there immediate family. Where i'm from that would be seen as a positive not a negative.

Generalizing yes, racial stereotype maybe be it wasn't meant to be seen as a negative.

Happy to be wrong on this call, more than happy because he has plenty of potential and i think he is a good fit for us but unless the immediate family go up to Brisbane can't see him staying past this current contract.

Well said.

If we got Hogan we wouldn't have Mayes or Paps.... Both who should be very good players with a few pre-seasons and 10 kilos of muscle.

I think Mayes is a potential Roll Royce like Jobe Watson

We need to trade Merret. He is one of our best, but won't be around for our success. He will start to go down hill in the next year or two anyway. Trade him at his peak and get a top 15-20 pick.
