Thanks all. Appreciate it. :)

Bark orders type leader? Or lead by example type leader?
I think i rate Murphy higher than a lot on here but he is one of the better shutdown defenders IMO. He does lack a little composure with the ball but its hardly a huge concern.
Then again, I myself am a shutdown defender so I may just be too lovey with that kind of player but he is one i really rate

Came on to write the same thing. Can't blame Murphy for wanting to move on. Ellis did sweet F.A in the finals.
Ellis started very well on the ball until being moved deep - wasn't seen from then on.
Not a great tactical move...

A bit of both. Can really lockdown on a small, so he's in a peripheral role, but he does have a booming voice who can marshall the troops, whether at at a stoppage or during play.

So where to from here with potentially Young, Gilham and Murphy all going?

Take anything we can get for these guys through free agency compo picks or late draft picks and then trying to realistically cover their losses immediately and quickly re-establishing our backline depth by looking at guys like Tom Gillies and Joel Tippett in the drafts (should Gillies be delisted by the Cats as predicted by many), Maverick Weller (possibly in a trade for Murphy or Gilham) and then best available mid with pick 27 or even a Ben Jacobs?

Thats just a scenario currently playing out in my mind.

Grizz, Mess, Echols...your thoughts???

I bet large sums of money that we keep 27, or even upgrade it in another deal with some shuffling of picks.

I'd also think that a ready made defender will be added to the list(Gillies, etc) during the draft period, in repalcement of Boumann who's seemingly out the door.

Won't be at all surprised if Young continues with Hawthorn. Murphy and Gilham deserve contracts elsewhere.

I think all of that is plausible.

One thing I will add re the trade draft period. It's all a finely balanced Jenga stack of fish fingers: delicious, slightly smelly, and precarious. Some deals are contingent upon other things happening first etc. So some or all of the plans may fall over because something else did or didn't happen. It's a meatmarket governed by chaos theory.

Tom plays Hawthorn would have a premiership cup, Tom Murphy would have a premiership medal and we wouldn't be looking at such a great Hawthorn man leaving this club...not a big fan of yours right now Mr Ellis.

It's not Xavier's fault - look to the selection table first and foremost. X man went very well in the first quarter but like a significant number of others went missing after that. Personally I wished Murphy had played but it certainly wasn't x mans fault that he didn't get a guernsey.

Murphy can't stay - overlooked once you can accept, shafted a second time - unforgivable. I hope he does well wherever he goes.
