He never got much ruck time with Grundy in the side and even Cameron got more. In my opinion Cox is a better tap ruck than both of them.
Easier to do when you're almost 7ft tall.
Tbh, I never really notice or care that much about the actual ruckwork (except when Nicnat was flying). But Cox's marking in defence could be a weapon.

The Final against the Swans , Cameron was having a mare , we were getting a hammering as far as at least negating the opposing Ruckmen , the scoreboard was looking ugly , Cox came in , gave a strong presence in squaring up the ledger in that department, we worked our way back into the match and just fell short of getting the chocolates.

I like the idea of Cox falling back during games with with Moore, Framps, Howe, Maynard, Pendles and IQ

It goes from a defender blocking his run and keeping him away from the drop zone to our defenders protecting him by keeping forwards away from the drop zone.

Cameron was having a mare at the start but finished strongly in the second half after Cox went down.

Think Hill initially takes Ginnis spot but long term think they will be in the same team.

With all the extra running being reported on McCreery wouldn't be surprised to see him moved up field same with Elliott both used fwd and mid rotating.

Reef has also looked good forward and there is obviously McStay to fit in.

It's good that we finally have selection dillemas again.
Training reports also suggest McReery will be spending some time as a mid.

From Side by Side FB group.

A cobalt sky with a light dusting of cloud greeted the players who entered the arena around 9.15 with Jakob Ryan and Ed Allan entering slightly earlier. By midway through the session the sun was biting and the players relished the comfort of their rehydration breaks.

Macrae, Harrison, Begg and Draper were all active members of the infirmary with Kreuger still sidelined and Ginnivan recuperating in the bosom of his family. Macrae and Harrison worked in tandem with a trainer doing resistance work with the elastic bands, jogging, agility oriented exercises around cones, with Macrae later graduating to running semi-circles of the ground at a decent click. Begg and Draper were more subdued with their work rate. Josh Daicos was marked absent on the roll.

The main group as is customary worked to their own beat for the first ten minutes with Crisp favouring sideways runs sweeping the width of the arena, and others involved in desultory kicking and marking in a spontaneous manner. A trainer engaged some of them with some low throwdowns which focussed attention on the skill of picking up ground balls. IQ practised shooting goals from acute angles with quite a bit of success.

As ever, the long whistle heralded the being of training proper and players assembled in two groups – those wearing black sauntered over to the outer side, while those donning the white gathered in the middle.

The black top group began with forward scissor kicks and then proceeded to a hopping routine. They were instructed to hop, hop, hop stride and then ordered to do a succession of high lifts, with the training explaining that this was to condition their hammies. Following this they negotiated the mini-hurdles at a good speed and then ran flat out besides this apparatus. Meanwhile the ‘whities’ were undertaking a kicking/handball routine in the middle.

They swapped and the white training top group were told “Let’s get hoppy.” All players were wearing the new merchandise which was modelled on social media a few days ago.

When both groups had completed the two activities, all congregated near the orange cones and they had to run at full speed to the other line of cones about fifty metres away and this occurred four or five times and by this juncture they were certainly warmed up. As they were running they were told to look bouncy, run upright, on the heels etc.

Next on today’s menu was a four station activity set-up. In two of them half would wear yellow, the others their designated black or white top. Most of the play here was related to contesting and freeing a player who would release to a running option. One focussed on tackling, while at either end there was a mix of marking practice and goal-kicking. The protracted whistle would signal the changing of stations.

After a water break to replenish the fluids, there were some other drills focussing on ball movements after contests. There were three separate long shouts of affirmation or

There was then a division between white and black with the former heading to the pavilion side of the ground, while the black group headed to the outer side. This became a long ball movement drill which was started by a kick which was batted to the ground by one of the coaches and then the ball sharker would kick off proceedings. The players started in the ground positions formation with the defenders, mids and forwards beginning in the sector in which they would be slated to play. The emphasis was on the defender initiating play with movement from the mids through to the forward zone group. Generally, the ball movement was slick and there were some clean pick-ups from the deck. Near the end of this half the players donned yellow vests and it became a competitive drill. IQ loudly proclaimed the success of the yellow team when they pinched a goal from their opposition. The players appeared to lap up this high-octane activity and were in a eudemonic state for most of this time with lots of volume, even some ululating as the tempo lifted.

Players then swapped halves of the ground so that the whites were now on the outer side. The coaches barked multiple instructions throughout and there were multiple directives shouted at times with ‘layers’ one I hadn’t heard before and there was an urgent call to ‘keep your speed up’!. The players were calling ‘lace out’.

Finally the match simulation went ahead. It was simply a contest between the blacks and whites. Most of the former looked likely types for the potential senior team, though there were a few anomalous selections, clearly for the purpose of balance. To this effect, Nick D and Maynard belonged to the white team, while Allan played for the black side.

The whites roughly were: Reef, Ash, Ryan, Wilson, Murphy, Bianco. The aforementioned Nick D. and Maynard, Carmichael, Kelly, Murley, Ruscoe, WHE, Markov, Cameron, Richards, and McCreery. The blacks consisted of: Cox, Mitchell, McStay, Hill, Frampton, Howe, Moore, Pendles, Sidey, Adams, IQ, Noble, Allan, Lipa, JDG, and Elliot.

Some of the match-ups included: Kelly/McStay, Checkers/Murphy, Moore/Ash, Nick/Mitchell, Reef/Howe, Cox/Cameron.

Overall the standard was scrappy at times but there were some good highlights. Hill just missed taking a specci, while Checkers and McStay both took good grabs with the latter converting – he kicks as straight as a die, and his hands are very sticky. Kelly was able to latch onto some loose balls and start some attacking moves. Similarly, Moore and Howe were mopping up deep at the other end but Reef marked and Nick D was able to provide impetus from the middle and set up the white team’s attacking moves. Carmichael was also prominent at times in clearances and drove the ball forward. Ryan kicking a long goal which showed his flair and kicking range. He has a penchant to go for a bouncing run, while Allan in ball movement drills displayed his ability as a smooth mover who can kick with precision. WHE played in defence floated forward at times. Murphy took a very solid mark at one point.

Noble played as is his wont, with attacking intent while Cameron managed to win some tapouts. Cox and Nick won a few frees. It’s interesting to note that the game, albeit short, probably due to Friday’s fare, was adjudicated by official umpires.

During the match simulation one could hear lots of encouragement and instructions with TERRITORY, SET-UP, CORRIDOR being the most prominent of the words liberally used.

The black team was particularly vocal in assisting their players to understand the environment around them with their players frequently saying ‘You’re hot’ and drawing their attention to being in SPACE. Interesting to note that the freshly minted captain was not averse to instructing his elders with him imploring Pendles to move in a particular direction to be able to receive the ball. He later spent a bit of time with Frampton, using his hands quite often to explain things. Frampton moved all right but in the match sim he had a few airy punches at the ball.

Markov is another who is vocal and he could be heard screaming ‘Use your numbers’ on occasions.

Elliott has a crew cut, while again many of the players went down the in Cognito route wearing false numbers. Mitchell showed he can kick on both feet as during the match sim he wouldn’t revert to the left if it held him up.

The positive of course was seemingly getting through the session unscathed, though the diagnoses are often made days after proceedings and remain arcane to the naked eye.

Training report: Wednesday Feb 22nd.

Nice day for some training. Bit overcast, but the sun was slowly coming out. Had to move a couple times toward some shade and out of the sun, which wasn't always easy.

Absentees:
  • Ginni
  • Josh Daicos.

Rehab:
  • Macrae - Did alot of running
  • Harrison - Really exhausting running and agility work as he re-learns how to use his legs properly when running in an attempt to help his hammys.
  • Begg + Draper (Bike work and walking)

The Main session today started off with some warm ups, I like to take notice of this as tells me who is in attendance. And the colours they are wearing. There were a couple in the white that were probable, but mostly you could sense the squad that would line up in round 1.

Blacks:

  • Lippa
    JDG
  • IQ
  • Elliott
  • Mitchell
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • McStay
  • Adams
  • Allan
  • Frampton
  • Sidebottom
  • Hill
  • Crisp
  • Moore
  • Howe
  • Mihocek
  • Cox

Whites

  • Maynard (originally in black but swapped)
  • Bianco
  • Wlson
  • Cameron
  • Kelly
  • Ruscoe
  • Ryan
  • Reef
  • Murley
  • Murphy
  • Richards
  • McCreery
  • WHE
  • Nick D
  • Markov
  • Johnson
  • Steene
  • Carmichael

* Given Josh D wasn't there today, whether or not thats the reason Allan was in black -- who knows?

The centre bounce match ups were:

Maynard (first bounce). Nick. Carmichael
v
Pendles. De Goey. Mitchell.

  • Cox/Cameron
  • Sidey v Murley
  • Allan v Bianco

Reef performed strongly, especially against howe; took a high leap mark and goal out of that contest.
Ryan kicked a nice running long goal from around 50, the boys then got around him. Defenders don't kick too many so gotta make the use of them when they do happen.

Mcstay and Checkers were pretty prominent. Usually rotate positions with each other, sometimes McStay was at FF, then further up the ground, and then vice versa; but they seem to be connecting well.

They participated in some drills that worked through stoppages, forward 50 entries, involving transition. There would always be a teammate running with the ball. They seem to be doing this handball chain through the middle of the ground in connection with each player.

I noticed that Frampton was doing some ruck work with the likes of Cox and Cameron.
Steene while did a little ruck during match sim, he was used mostly up forward; maybe this is until he can build his body up I'm not toally sure. Maybe just want him to add some forward craft to his resume.

I've added these clips to YT and compiled them that'll maybe make a bit easier. Just a few short clips that doesn't give too much away -- though probably doesn;t matter now we;re at the match sim part of the pre-season

Thanks Jen,
Great to see the boys.
Fingers crossed Ginni gets Fly's boot out of his arse in time for round 3.
Did the individual videoing in a toilet get charged?

Problem is he looks like he's running on sand out there, and he's still pretty lightly built compared to the guys like checkers mcstay ect
Go and watch the early part of the video where Elliot can’t sprint away from Murphy. Murphy surprisingly showed very good speed to keep up with Elliot.

I actually thought Murph looked good & most are lightly built compared to McStay.
I don't see his build as too big an issue, especially if Frampton can cement his spot & take one of the big boys.
