Round 19. Thursday July 20th. Main training.

Probably coldest day for a training session yet, and all because of the wind that was blowing around. Felt like 2 degrees, but managed to get through it in the end. But the boys powered through.

Everyone was on the track. Apart from Dean, we know his situation for the time being. Holidaying it up in Europe atm before he comes back next week.
There was no De Goey, but as fly said; he is ill but traiing away from the group off-site.. so hopefully he should be right for Saturday.

WHE did some drills, but mainly did stuff to the side, running, and helping out with drills like kicking the ball back into play. He isn't ready yet. Possibly next week.

Black team;

  • Lippa
  • IQ
  • Maynard
  • Mitchell
  • JDaicos
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • Mcstay
  • Adams
  • Cameron
  • Frampton
  • Sidebottom
  • Crisp
  • Moore
  • McCreery
  • NDaicos
  • Markov
  • Howe
  • Mihocek
  • Cox

White team;

  • Elliott
  • Bianco
  • Wilson
  • Kreuger
  • Allan
  • Macrae
  • Draper
  • Kelly
  • Ruscoe
  • Hill
  • Ryan
  • Reef
  • Murley
  • Murphy
  • Richards
  • Ginni
  • Harrison
  • Begg
  • Johnson
  • Oscar
  • Carmy

During match sim you had.

Midfield: {Black}Mitchell, Nick, Crisp (Pendles rotated through from the bench) + DC v Fin, Carmy + Jamie (rotated with reef, one was forward, one was CB) Beggy and Steene rotated through the ruck.

Fwd: Checkers, Mcstay, Lippa, Adams, Beau, Cox v Draper (on Adams), Bianco (on Lippa), Richards (played HB today v Beau), Ryan (Mcstay), Ruscoe (Cox) and Murphy (on checkers)

Def: Moore, Maynard, Markov, Noble, Howe, IQ (Frampton rotated from the bench) v Reef (on howe), Johnson (on Moore), Kreuger (Maynard) Harrison (markov) Hill (on IQ) and Ginni (on noble)

They did the general stuff you find in every session, I sometimes feel like I'm repeating and boring everyone with it. But there was a focus on on contest work; they did a fight drill prior to match sim. It was 1v1 and your opponent had to fight to stay and win the ball. This was something they did fairly often during pre-season but hadn't seen too much of it lately.

They then split up into line groups and did some ball movement and skills. Forwards and mids were together, while the backs had their own separate group near the goals.

They did some sprints also. Goal kicking toward the end.

Pretty sure at this point that any players who have even a sniffle are kept away from the club during the week. Lost count of the times that a player has missed training for the week only to be selected and play on the weekend. Fully expecting Jordy to play at this point.

It’s not like any of them need any fitness training at this stage of the season, it’s more just for feel and game-plan reinforcement at this stage. I reckon he’ll play and will rip Port a new one.

Exactly. Both Moore & Elliott have gone all week without attending training due to 'illness' at some point during the year and both ended up playing one of their best games that week.

Good to see they are back at AIA Centre

Didn't realise until now that Brendan McCarthy's now coming to training every week.
No stone unturned these days.
Makes a lot of sense given the similarities in ball movement between the 07-11 Cats and this Collingwood group. We could do a lot worse than choosing McCartney as the replacement for Skipworth or Leppa once they’re poached. I suspect this’ll be Skipworth’s final season with us because he’s next in line for a 2IC role, IMO.

I agree that Skipworth is the most likely to be poached. Least personal connection with Fly compared to Bolton & Leppa (Selwood & Fraser are on a similar level to Skipworth there), and has been given lots of credit by Fly.

I'd be more comfortable letting Skipworth go than Leppitsch to be frank, so I'm okay with this

I’m not 100% sold on the logic because Skipworth was a GW appointment and I don’t think Fly would talk him up as much as he has nor would he be in the conversation as a future senior coach without being top tier. That said I think you’re spot on that Leppa is the more valuable of the two. That’s at least how it appears externally. It’s makes for an interesting debate because realistically we have NFI.

Never boring us, Jen. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love your contributions. Thank you for taking the time to post them.

I'd like to know how Skipworth is rated within the club. From memory he's about the only coach that wasn't hand-picked by McRae and is potentially OOC (do the assistants do period contracts? Complete mental blank).

We're due another Lions 3-peater. What's Luke Power up to?

assistant at carlton isn’t he?

every week someone is missing training for an illness.
In years gone by if you had a runny nose, upset stomach, bit of a cough, you would have continued training with the group and it never would have been mentioned by anyone. The last thing we need is for something to spread around the whole group.

That stuff has properly run through us twice in McRae’s time. In those 3 matches we’re 0-3 (Tiges and Dogs last year and Dees this year) so I wholeheartedly endorse the strategy to this point of 2023.

From Side By Side

The players drifted out at 9.10 and were greeted by an unblemished azure sky and dewy grass. We were back training on our own territory, and later the ground was bathed in pleasant sunshine.

There were a few absentees: Josh Daicos, IQ and Hill among them, all suffering from illness and two of these reside with one another. It’s a bugbear (pardon the pun) of track watchers that we never seem to be clear of the debilitating symptoms of flu and associated lurgies. We know from JDG’s output against Port that a bout of these seasonal germs does detract from performances.

Murley was also missing.

It is interesting to note that the hyphen after returning to full training has resumed his position as a black top wearer.

The players warmed up with their desultory kicking routines and some ground ball retrieval with trainers firing the ball into the turf.

They then split into three groups with a mix of black and white tops among all

One focussed on the forward kicking and high knee lifts working out specific muscles , another spent time baulking cones and running with a weight, while the third undertook some close-in handball drills.

The whole group then did some running which forced them to stretch out a bit between the arcs.

Michell, Ginni, Sidey and Carmichael all did some specialised short running with a weight contraption under the vigilant eye of a trainer.

Then all players sprinted to the centre, and after clearly listening to McRae or the coaches, a loud round of applause accompanied by some affirming yelps reverberated around the arena.

Further groups then formed which appeared to be targeted with certain line players focussing on various skills.

For example, all the larger and taller framed KPP and ruck types – Frampton, Dean, Moore, Begg, Murphy, McStay, Cox, Checkers, Cameron, Kelly, Steene and Ash spent time contesting marks in pairs and running towards a mark with another player swinging a tackling bag, trying to create an impediment.

Elsewhere there were handball and short kicking to position drills.

Was interesting to see Dean participating in the general activities. Later while match simulation took place, he completed running, including a lot of agility work with a trainer. He is progressively being reassimilated into the main group.

This was followed by some whole ground movement work, featuring multiple footballs, with the emphasis on slick delivery by hand and foot.

After that the players went for some rehydration with many sprinting full pace to vary the tempo of their training loads. This was also a strategy pause as the players listened intently to some instruction from the coaches.

Returning to the fray the players were involved in some high intensity half the ground ball movement.

Following another deep conversation between the coaches and their charges, they assembled for match simulation.

This was relatively short but played with much vim and vigour and players were not holding back in tackling and applying pressure to their opponents in contests. The aerial duels were willing and the track watchers speculated that this was in response to McRae’s concerns with the drop off in pressure being applied. Given that the Blues have partly risen on the back of extra pressure points, we would have to be acutely aware of this facet of our game.

WHE played on Wilson on the wing in the absence of Josh. Other match-ups included Ash on Howe, Moore on Steene, with Kelly and Ruscoe minding the likes of Checkers and McStay. Reef played some time in the middle and is showing encouraging signs.

Jamie and Checkers worked well together and the ball moved crisply around our sometimes dysfunctional forward zone.

Moore stymied quite a few forward moves by the whites with some strong marking but the highlight was McStay’s pack screamer. He elevated himself above a nest of fellow Magpies and clunked the mark. Many players rotated through positions and were pitted against different guys and the standard was really impressive given the willingness of the combatants to test the mettle of their opponents.

After this training gradually wound down with players seemingly choosing what to focus on. Elliott, Adams, Lippa and Pendles practised their goalkicking and earlier in the session Jamie treated spectators to more of his stellar goal slotting from the boundary line.

Some players were doing a contesting drill between poles, while the line coaches were in deep discussions with various players.
