I’m still making homemade Italian sausages , prosciutto, capocollo etc etc according to Nonna’s tutelage and recipe , FJ , if you do enjoy Italian cuisine , you must go to Amiconi in North Melbourne, superb restaurant with home style traditional Italian dishes . 😘. The best in Melbourne, notwithstanding, I have not been to the one you mentioned.

Training report: 2023, Session 1. January 12th.

Really warm day, and I of course end up sunburnt on my feet and back of my neck haha.

Session began at 1:30-3:30 as I expected. It was quite solid first day back.

Players on track -

  • Lippa
  • De Goey
  • IQ
  • Maynard
  • Mitchell
  • JDaicos
  • Bianco
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • McStay
  • Wilson
  • Adams
  • Allan
  • Frampton
  • Draper
  • Kelly
  • Sidebottom
  • Hill
  • Crisp
  • Reef
  • Murley
  • Murphy
  • Richards
  • McCreery
  • WHE
  • Ginnivan
  • NDaicos
  • Harrison
  • Howe
  • Begg
  • Johnson
  • Mihocek
  • Dean
  • Cox

  • I saw Macrae just walking around the boundary with a trainer. Feels like some sort of back injury. Stress fracture? You'd hope not.
  • Darcy Moore was out doing some light rehab stuff, range of movements to get moving after so long.

De Goey and Beau are close to full training. They did most things, then were told to do some running. They weren't pleased at the amount they were about to do. De Goey especially haha

  • No Elliott, Ruscoe, Cameron, Kreuger.
  • Jacob Ryan was seen before the session leave the club, but he didn't train.

They did the usual warm ups, and then went onto sprint running.
The markers were put separately depending on your skilll. The endurance runners in Lippa, IQ, Carmichael, Richards, Kelly were put a bit behind everyone else. Maynard did well in this sprint. The big ruck boys were at other end, as they tend to be the lower types.

They separated into groups where they worked on some skills. Moving the ball in and around congestion. Stoppage work.
There was abit of match play toward the end as well.

I was very impressed by Harvey Harrision. He looks fitter than he ever been, looks to have put on some weight in the off season as well. If he can keep his body healthy, he should have a role to play.

Arlo Draper and Allan both looked very good as well. Allan's kicking is something special for his size.

Mick McGuane's son, was at training helping out with the kick ins. He has a nice skills on him, good kick. Probably did some skills work. As part of the FS academy. He was there with a friend of his. At first I thought they were fans, until I soon discovered who he was. Good kid. Very nice.

Post session I had a chat to Oscar Steene and his dad. He's a good kid, very easy to chat to as well. I told him just to keep working hard.

Believe there is another session on Satuday-- I imagine in the morning as its gonna be a hot one.

Watched all of Jen's videos on twitter > a few takeaways

Nick Daicos - it's hard to put into words because we all know how good he is already, but jeez, he really is just a sight to behold. Such a diamond we have.

Josh Carmichael - He is looking much fitter with a bit more muscle and less pudge. He really looks ready to have a good crack at it, looks genuine best 22

Steene - looks good in the ruck and comfortable with ball in hand. His skills look quite good for a ruck. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets that list spot.

Begg - looks to be struggling a little, I really want it to all click for him but he looks to struggling to win a ruck contest and doesn't offer much that you look for in a ruck. Chases and tackles well, but also looks like he gets gassed quite quickly. Hope he can add some strings to his bow.

Bianco - He really needs to add some size to his frame. Still looks very small and slight, after a couple of years in the system. He is going to struggle for a game as our midfield is looking pretty stacked with Mitchell, Carmichael, Macrae all waiting in the wings for this season.

Begg sounds like he should be training as a KPD.

My own brief observations from training today

The good
  • Nick Daicos continues to impress. He wins the 2K time trial at the start of pre-season suggesting endurance, but is surprisingly quick in a fast-twitch sense
  • Ed Allen - really has some toe and is a good size. Finished his work off well by foot. Pretty exciting prospect
  • Josh Carmichael does look fitter and harder. One to watch
  • Standouts in the YoYo-style running (IQ, McCreery (most surprising for me), Lipinski, Maynard, Richards).
  • Vibe amongst the group
  • Overwhelming sense for me is that our depth is going to be much better than last season.

Hope this changes

- Back of the field in the Yoyo (Begg, Johnson, McInnes)

- Players still don't practice goal kicking enough. I was chatting to someone who in the Australian sport science/coaching community is regarded as a foremost expert in 'practicing'. He observed that he was surprised that the players would move a ball upfield but a forward (eg Ash Johnson) wouldn't finalise the drill by kicking a goal (complete with a routine which milked the clock for close to 30 seconds) but instead returned the ball to the centre. i concurred with him that I felt goal kicking was a neglected part of the Collingwood training regime with only Cox and the Daicos' regular at the end of training to do extra work on the skill.

That's notable/perhaps not what I was expecting
  • Wilbur seemed to be playing across half back in some of the end-to-end drills. Most notable positional change apparent to me
  • Still getting used to - Maynard wearing No 4
  • Frampton is a very good size. Saw McStay at the SM Market up close recently and he's very tall and broad shouldered. Frampton is notably taller and more solid than him though when observing them together at AIA.

Coming back to Melbourne at the end of the year. I will look you up and we go to Amiconi together.
OK? 🤣
I die for prosciutto and home made Italian sausages. Plus the vino
Greek heritage here and yiayias food to die for as well.

Good stuff FJ , hit me up when your back in Melbourne Town , we go too Amiconi together “re” 😉. Where are you now ? 2 of my best friends are Greek. Love the spanakopita, and galaktoboureko .
I’m in for the Amiconi love in as well. If you’ll have me.
It’s like time travelling to Lygon Street circa 1978.
I’m a regular there and Michael lets me BYO wine (my Italian heritage helps).

Interesting. If I were looking to move Crisp into a permanent midfield role this might be a goer or with the sun setting on Howe’s time in the game it may be an ok bridging move (WHE being the most like for like aerially on the list, IMO). It could potentially also open up a spot for Bobby Hill or Carmichael depending on who impresses across pre-season.

Subject: Some observatons from training today.

The players started filing out of the pavilion just after one and limbered up under a cerulean sky, with just a few sporadic clouds and a sun which had a lot of sting in it. Both sides of the arena were thronged by a healthy crowd turnout of fans eager for a glimpse of their heroes.
Jakob Ryan signed a few autographs and then left the venue. Fin Macrae walked some slow laps, while Nathan Kreuger, Darcy and Jamie Elliott were no shows.

It was what you’d expect from a return to training session. There were the customary warm-ups with mini-hurdles and a desultory kick to kick session between the friendship groups.

Thereafter there was a mixture of aerobic work, skills and tackling. There was some light match simulation, more in extended groups and some whole ground ball movement activities and lots of stoppage practice. Josh Fraser also took some ruck-work with Steen, Cox and a few of the runners like Noble practising their sharking skills.
The running session was quite protracted and it was noticeable that Maynard, complete with shoulder bandage, was prominent here, looking very fit and attacking his running in a beep test style segment, with vim and vigour. The usual suspects like Lippa also shone, while the bigger bodies like Begg and Cox were feeling the heat.

Kelly was looking very fit and moved well; he clearly realises he’s on his last chance.
Was also impressed with Draper who like Harrison, looks to have bulked up and Arlo’s kicking to position over long distances was a treat to watch at times.
McCreery and JDG went to the sidelines as the main match simulation was beginning and the latter was clearly shocked by the instructions from the physio who must have ordered some decent fitness-oriented work to compensate for the reduced match play in their training regimen.

Moore was spotted talking to the coaching staff during the running and he later accompanied a physio to the outer side and did some work on high knee lifts and practising a full range of movements such as lateral etc. He may be a fair way off joining main training. Some observers thought that he may miss the first month or so to ensure he doesn’t break down.
I asked one of the physios if he knew what is wrong with Macrae as he walked fairly gentle laps. He relied rather one would suggest evasively, that he is fine and just a bit off-colour today. Nonetheless, according to Jen, he missed the last couple of weeks of pre-Christmas training.

Ed Allan appeared to complete full training and looked pretty good. Many were sporting different numbers. Nick Daicos, looking as sharp as ever, and destined for an even better year, had traded guernsey numbers with Noble. Others were sans number and there’s also an adjustment period to the new numbers being worn by players this year.

Mitchell who looked super fit was numberless but Ginnivan, with his natural hair colour on display wore Tom’s number six. Mitchell was linking well in the stoppages and whole game movement simulations and should be an asset in the clearances.
Adams was back to full training and looks fighting fit.
It was hard to miss Frampton who donned the fuchsia boots, is strikingly tall and has a shock of blond hair. He seems to have fitted in well. Likewise McStay was wearing his #11 and he looked smooth in his movements and sure by hand. It will be interesting to see if he rotates through the ruck thus changing the balance of the team in terms of whether there is an imperative to play both Cox and Cameron.

Bobby Hill was notable at times. He has blinding pace but his challenge will be to build his tank. In a similar vein Johnson looks so capable with ball in hand but needs to improve his endurance.
Carmichael’s hair has remained white with some artificial help but his booming kick was on display and he will also be endeavouring to recalibrate his engine.
Overall, while there were some dropped marks, and miskicked kicks, the skills on display were pretty impressive, and those participating in full training looked very fit, and keen knowing that there might be some spots with some hotter competition. There will be the likes of Draper and Harrison pushing for selection in addition to the need to accommodate McStay, Hill and maybe Framption. Of course Dean also looked cherry ripe to return to the action and he may be ahead of Billy in the pecking order.

Of the older players, Sidey and Pendles looked as fit as ever and still fervently committed to the cause. Howe and Checkers looked free of any niggles and were competing well in the main simulation and the skill drills. The challenge for track-watchers though is to know when to turn up and watch the boys ply their trade.

That would be a disaster, probably the only place we don’t have any depth at all. Do we think Frampton is being lined up for this?

First month of training I assume that means not first month of the season
my friend who was with me at training reckons he would miss the first few games, given they would have to give him a full pre-season to get fit. But the next few weeks will decide where he is, and if he can get into full training by the end of the month. If so, he may not miss any.

Early on, I thought Jakob Ryan was the pick of the draftees for the 2023 season. This is slowly changing as Ed Allen is really showing something. He's reminding clubs that we stole him for a very low price for a man of his talent.

To me, Josh Carmichael assumes his place in the starting 2022. Who for, I am unsure of.

Begg and Johnson have to monitor their fitness and work hard on it. If they cannot, their contracts won't be renewed. I suspect we'll be jumping on the ruck merry-go-round and selecting a mature age player to fill the hole and demand for rucks. We'd then probably draft a rookie as well. McInnes has shown something but keeps finding himself injured. He's addressing his aerobic capabilities but they're a long way off the rest of the team. I think he gets renewed for 2024, but after that his future is less clear.

Agree. Cox has one of the competition's most accurate kicks - think it's about 60% - and much of this is because he has trained very hard to learn and master the skill. Less than a decade ago, Cox couldn't kick. Almost all AFL players (even Cat B) had kicked a football before being signed. Many would have been kicking for over a decade and those lunch time hit outs do start to add up.

My own final thought: Where is WHE? I haven't heard much about him at all. Flying very under the radar. Harvey Harrison also hasn't got enough credit for the work he's been doing.
